Because the .gov has taxed these companies so much that it was cheaper to move them overseas to begin with. How about the .gov pull their collective heads out of their @$$ and give companies tax breaks to build here to make us competitive again? Oh, that's right, that would be to easy.

If the problem is stemming from the inability to regulate quality control practices in other countries, why not just make the parts here? Seems like a simple solution.....?

Because, unfortunately, as the law is written it affects US manufacturers as well.

US manufacturers are having some of the same issues with compliance with the laws that foreign manufacturers are. US manufacturers must also pay the expense of testing as well.

It's just bad law.

I agree with you Cataract, but some people think a free-market solution would work better. Like letting the jobs go wherever they would be cheapest. Its called protectionism, and other countries always threaten us like they did with the now discarded Buy American segment of the stimulus. I'd like to say forget everyone else and keep jobs here and tariff the hell outta imports, but in a world market things don't always work like that.

Ah. Yep, that's a bummer.

Here is the reply that I got today:

quote:

Dear Mr. Boos:

Thank you for your letter on recent safety recalls of tainted food and consumer goods. I share your concerns and I appreciate this opportunity to respond.

It is the responsibility of the Food and Drug Administration to inspect and safeguard the nation's food supply, in order to prevent outbreaks of food-based illnesses and contain such outbreaks when they do occur.

To help the FDA accomplish these goals, the Senate has passed several measures to reinforce and improve the FDA, and I am proud to have been a sponsor of the FDA Revitalization Act, which strengthens the FDA's ability to inspect food and expand its notification process so that the public can learn sooner about outbreaks and recalls sooner.

Our people expect and deserve that their food supply and consumer products are safe. I strongly support the agencies responsible for inspecting food and goods, and when necessary, and I'm doing all I can to see that they have the authority and support they need to protect the American public.

Thank you for contacting me on this important subject.

Sincerely,
Edward M. Kennedy

Clearly this has fallen on deaf ears. Unless of course youth motorcycles are now considered food products.

What politicians know anything about what our real lives are like anymore? Most of them are muti-millionaires (Obama included).
They have people kissing their asses all day long and get most everything they want.
Heck one of our senators doesn't even live in Iowa, he has a home in the Bahamas.
I don't thnk they care about if something like motorcycles are banned from kids by that legislation. It just solves them from having to do it another way.

My guess is that THIS politician voted for the bill but didn't even bother to read it.

I think we need more government involvement in our lives. I feel totaly unable to keep myself and my family safe enough without their help. God Bless the concerned politicians for keeping all of us safe. You guys may not know it but we are all incapable of taking care of ourselves. I think a letter thanking our elected officials for their concern is in order. I'll be penning one this week and I suggest you all do the same.

I have been "pen shy" when it comes to government correspondence since the second grade. Our teacher decided we would all write letters to President Nixon including a picture of ourselves . To add a little background to this it was 1972 and I was the only non white child enrolled in my village's elementary school system at the time and my self portrait sported a giant Angela Davis type afro. Well a few months pass by and we get our reply letters back from the White House. They were each personalized to the effect that the President (or more likely a staffer...I hope) responded to the individual comments in each of our original letters. included in each of our envelopes was an Autographed photo.................Everyone else got a head shot of Tricky Dick............I got a picture of Checkers......who was long dead......

My teacher God bless her , said to me " Well now I guess you are special because you got the only picture of Checkers....(who was long dead). My father said " That c@#$*%^&*&g, m*&^%@rf*%^&@g, p*&$k!" (Gotta love the Scotch for their modesty!) I look back on the whole episode as my first introduction to political comedy, a industry where we are still the number one producer and exporter.
