I am ready to do my first service and I have been told to clean a screen in the bottom of the engine along with changing the filter. Anyone know where this is, and has anyone done it? This info came from a tech on one of the racing teams. | ||

According to the manual, you have to drop the exhaust to get at the back bolts for this. It is located on the bottom right side of the engine and it's sitting behind the clutch. I think there's five bolts holding it in, it's a little bit odd shaped for what it is. It looks like it's just a rough screen for catching large debris. | ||

The screen is pretty porous. So its not going to catch dirt like a filter. More than likely its cleans. If there is some internal damage it would catch larger pieces of debris. A good inspection of your oil filter can tell you the same thing. Plus the muffler is kind of a pain to put back on, but if you do remove the screen make sure you replace the gasket. (the gasket is round not the shape of the cover when it new, so it may look like the wrong part at first glance) | ||

I don't think its actually part of the service. At least it's not mentioned on the check list. It might be more of a "feel good" type inspection. | ||

Strange we are just learning of this screen/filter now but glad to know non the less...makes me wonder what else resides yet unknown of yet within this Helicon. Thanks for the input regarding this. mm | ||

Well, first service is done. What a messy job. Not hard, just messy. I have to figure a better way not to get oil all over the place. Maybe a valve that you can hook a drain hose to for the left drain plug. I don't know about the oil filter housing, that seems destined for making a mess. Did use plenty of pigmat though. | ||

Ha Ha...welcome to the messy mouse club. I read the threads about the oil change, and I new I was going to beat the mess. I had aluminum foil channeled for it to flow exactly where I wanted it to go. And then I popped the plug and the stream shot right past the oil catch pan, pushed over the aluminum foil channels and onto the floor et al...and of course in the shear panic that followed it went everywhere I didn't want it to. Yes! the oil change on this bike is not fun...especially the first time around. My buddies were laughing their asses off watching me mother f the bike as oil got everywhere other than where I wanted it to go... Second go around...much better! Third go around this weekend...we'll see. | ||

I've had one of those on my car for years! They're great, but take a really long time to drain. It's still nice to flip it and walk away for a while, then flip it back and fill up. Ya just have to remember not to drive away while it's draining! | ||

I think that's a really bad idea on a bike. Make sure and check your magnet plug every time. Z |
