I'm a few miles away from hitting 1000 miles on my 08 ulysses. Called to make an appointment for the 1000 mile service and can't get in for 2 weeks yet. Looking for advice on what to do. I'm guessing I'll probably put on another 400+ miles in the mean time. Should I do a fluid change now? I already paid for the 1000 mile service when I bought the bike. I guess it didn't think it was going to take two weeks to get in... |

I've got over 14000 miles on my ULY and it still hasn't been in for the 1000 mile service. In the mean time I'd suggest that you buy the ULY service manual and then start doing all your own maintenance and save yourself a bundle of moola. After they do your 1000 mile service I'm betting you'll be posting how they screwed something up. What would they do on a 1000 mile service on an 08 anyways? No TPS or timeing. Charge you 300 bucks for a filter an oil change. I really doubt the primary chain even would need adjusting. The service tech will probably take your bike out for a good beating during his lunch break. |

Electra You are so right. Took my 08 Uly in for it's 1000 mile service on Tuesday. $225.00 for 4 quarts of oil and it was down a gallon of gas when I got it back. I'll be doing it myself next time. |

If you already paid for it, you might as well wait and do it. Don't worry about going over the mileage. This is not rocket science, and not that precise. If you have any mechanical aptitude whatsoever, buy the service manual(s). Only the TPS reset takes any special tools, and since your '08 doesn't need that, all you need are some basic hand tools. |

Take advantage of owning a Ulysses and do your own service...not only are you saving money but the time involved in taking it to the dealer..2 1/2 qts of oil in the swingarm, 1 qt. of Formula+ in the primary and a 5/8"(fits both drain plugs) wrench and a Buell oil filter thats all you need..I wish I had a train load of ULYs waiting for a $225.00 oil change at my garage..I would even put some air in the tires...and wipe off the windscreen.. |

Since I already paid for it I'll have them do it this time. I did all my own work on my S2, don't know why I felt the need to have the dealer do it now? I guess I was just to excited that day, wonder what else I bought or agreed to??? |

Don't forget, 1K service should be much more than just a fluid & filter change. Every major chassis fastener should be checked for proper adjustment. Every seal and bearing should be checked, at least visually. 'Nothing's fallen off yet" is not good enough. Mark in Arizona |

^~~true dat, but if you can change the oil, you can damned well check the torque on your critical fasteners. |

Do not over torque the oil drain bolts. 12 to 14ft./lb. is plenty. Get new drain bolt orings and some thread sealant too. |

Darthane, I go to WalMart and get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 15W50 for around $23.00 and that is good for 2 changes. |

I changed my oil and tranny fluid for the 1000 too. If you look in the book, that's all there is listed to do really. My 5000 is coming this weekend now. Make sure you get the ECU upgrade from the dealer if you have a 2008 though! |

My 1000 mile service was a mess. $200+ oil change and the dealer didn't even get that correct (overfilled the oil). Do it yourself!!! |

Does auto zone or walmart carry the oil filters or can you buy them online? I know the trans fluid should be from HD dealer. I got a free 1000k service from my dealer and need to know if I should pick the filters up when I am there. |

Check the BadWeb vendors. I just buy them from my local dealer as they are not expensive. Get O-rings too, for the plugs. |
