I am shopping around for a Buell, probably won't get it til May though, but I was talking to a friend who mentioned that he couldn't take his 600cc Honda shadow on long trips because the engine couldn't handle it. His bike isn't a Buell but I was curious how the Buell's handle long trips. I will be mainly using it for just riding around the city but taking it for an extended trip somewhere would be a nice option to have too. I have been looking at the xb9r, however if I were planning on taking long trips would this be adequate or should I be thinking about upgrading to a 12?? Also, I'm relatively new to the motorcycle world(so I'm also not sure I'd want to jump up to a 12 right now anyway) and am semi-mechanically inclined, but it seems odd to me that any engine would have a hard time with long trips just based on the size, could someone explain this to me or is my friend just mistaken(although he claims the dealership told him this so I'm inclined to believe it) Note: I realize if I'm doing a lot of touring the xb9r may not be the best choice, however I am not planning on doing a lot of this, I am just curious if the bike could handle it should I ever decide to do it. |

LOL a moped could handle it if you ride it correctly. No issues at all on long hauls or short ones, longest day for me on my 9 was around 500 and change. The bike will outlast the rider on long trips, no worries at all pick up the 9 and laugh at your friend. |

The longest trip I've taken on my XB9R was a little over 3000 miles at the Carving the Northeast event years back. The very first day was about 300 miles of twisty backroads heading through southeastern Ohio, and I don't think I ever dropped below 5000RPMs except when we stopped. The first 7 days were all like that, 250-350 miles a day of nice twisty roads at high RPMs, and the last two days were a marathon run from Portland, ME back home near Detroit, MI on the slab at 80mph the whole way. The bike was surprisingly comfortable, even on the 600 mile slab day. I put S pegs on to ease the angle on my knees, but that was my only concession to the bike's ergos. The engine on my XB9R has never been opened over 24,000 miles and I hope to keep it that way. =D |

The limiting factor to the xb9r on long trips is the riding position, not the engine. In stock form, the number of positions you can move to (safely) is limited, so you need to take breaks periodically to stretch out. At least I do anyway. You will wear out long before the bike starts to complain. Sometimes on long straight sections I wish that I had a more upright position. Funny... I never seem to have that problem when the road is twisty... route planning is the key |

I have done many 600 mile +/- 10-14 hour day trips on my NineR. (corbin seat and "s" pegs) It is one of the most comfortable "sport bikes" For me it gets really boring and uncomfortable after about 30 minutes on the interstate. As long as your riding curvy roads its a blast. From one of my camping trips:

I loved my 9R ... so long as we were getting it on in the twisties. I hated it just putting around or on a straight road. ... Heil bars and "s" pegs help tremendously for general riding. (Message edited by rubberdown on February 28, 2008) |
