I would like to convert both my back and front turn signals to LED lights. Has anyone done this and what type of load balancer did you use?

There are direct plug-in replacements for the motorcycle specific bulbs you wish to change. As far as a load bancer is concerned, you are actually lessening the electrical load by a tremendous amount by going to LED, and when I did this change on a previous machine, had no problems whatsoever with the electrical system bone stock. By the way, be prepared to pay quite a bit per bulb for the LED's, but your replacement costs should become nil, if you purchase a well made light.

If you want the turn signals to blink, you'll need a load equalizer. Try jpcycles.com. They carry both. Equalizer about $30 bucks, straight LED bulbs about $11 each.

Interesting how this works - I have the barend signals and the mini rear - all LED - and they blink the same speed as stock, the other bike - front and rear mini's and they blink fast, however the mfgr says that though they may blink fast they should be ok - no load equalizer on either.

Iam actually looking at building the turn signals right into the backside of my mirrors. So I will be custom making everything. I was at the J&P cycle website and wasn't sure which model load balancer I needed because they look like they are built to plug into specific model Harley's

Ez, are you using the same type on both bikes? Also, did I read that right in that your tail lamp is now on the turn signal circuit (ie. blinks when you have the signal on?).

I believe the flasher unit used in XBs is load-dependent - if one bulb blows the other's blink faster and faster. If the Blast uses the same style, you may have simply come close enough to the stock load by adding the tail lamp to make it flash correctly. With the other, though, you've decreased load by switching to LEDs and thus they blink fast.

You don't necessarily need the load equalizer for LED turn signals. Buy them, install them. If they work the way you want, or blink fast and you can live with it, fine. If not, go get the equalizer.

Seeeu911... Thanks, that load balancer may do the trick for me. Now I just have to find the right LEDs to set up in the mirrors

Your welcome Ken, I'm looking hard for a front turn signal solution also. I like the Kellerman Bar End Signals but with my solid Crossroads bars major surgery is required...then I have to make a mount attachement to combine the bar end lights with the bar end mirrors, too much.

Here is a link to LED blinkers installed in a Duc mirror. very sanitary.
http://www.bnin.net/~tdgraham/stealthsignals/

this on ebay is very cool concept. Now if CRG made bar ends like these... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=35557&item=245 7668194

That mirror on the duc s very close to what I am designing. I did a bunch of reading on LEDs last night and got a better idea of what I will need. Now it's on to step 2. geting supplies and start building things....

The load balancer is needed for self canceling HD turn signals. If you don't have self canceling turn signals you shouldn't need it.

Koz, one of my dreams is to have an S3 with a LED tail light that lights up the entire lens; not just a rectangle in the center. Where did you find the information on LEDs?

All LEDs are not created equal... and there is a huge amount of junk out on the market.

The number of LEDs that are in a light is not very relevant due to the huge differences in brightness between LEDs... concentrate on viewing angle and luminous output (usually measured in candella). Generally speaking, anything below a 30 degree viewing angle and 10 candella (10,000 mcd) is not worth soldering into a motorcycle taillight.

Oh, and please, anyone who reads this, do not waste your time buying "Autozone" LED pop-in bulbs... you're seriously compromising your visibility by doing so... I've tested them myself, they suck. They have a small number of LEDs that are not bright enough to do the job.

For reference, the Buell lighting circuit is different than an H-D... quite different actually.

So, what's the proper etiquette here regarding shameless self-promotion? I suspect that there's a fine line between offering a service that someone is looking for and spamming.

I do not want to piss anyone off or step on anyone's toes... PM me if you need to regarding this.

Seeu911 - get the CRG barends or any that clamp to the bar - don't use the adapter - move grips in just enough to mount mirrors - loosing grip ends - and install your Kellermans. Easy deal - thats on my black bike with the mini signals in the rear, on the red bike I have minis front and rear and they blink fast - no biggie, I think the barend signals have a load pull equal to the old units or close enough so that the signal speed is almost identical to stock. No I have'nt installed a flasher unit to my rear set - yet - still thinking on its value.

Edward R. Zick..your nuts man ! I love your theme Blasts way cool dude. Looks like I have to vist the thumper world to get some good ideas. I like your idea with the kellermans. I will have to drill out my crossroads bars as they are CNC billet 2/3 solid, but now I wont have to make mounts for my CRG's. Last night I mounted some Diamond Chrome mini turn sighals to the Vrod headlight and cut down H3 halogens to fit inside the housings. wayyy bright...But I dig the Kellerman idea more...

Drheathenscum, I'm sure Blake will do good by you. Dont be surprised if you have to email him again, running this board and having a life is a full time job.
