Yusuf Garba, commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission in the northern town of Kano.

"We will not tolerate this. We gave them enough time to purchase helmets. Six months ago the price of helmets was below 800 naira so complaints about non-availability and high prices are no excuse," he told Reuters.

Pay attention you may hear this about a number of government "runover" issues Here in the us. the nany state in action.

Can't believe that a country that had an entire new type of scam named after it has helmet laws. I wouldn't mind me a pumpkin or watermelon full face though...yumm.

I don't get it... You can get an AK-47 just about anywhere in Africa, but helmets are a luxury?

"Newspapers quoted passengers as saying they feared the helmets could be laced with magic spells so as to knock the wearer unconscious and make them easier to rob"

The gene pool would probably be a little clearer if these people weren't in it. Let 'em go without head protection. Please.

"Newspapers quoted passengers as saying they feared the helmets could be laced with magic spells so as to knock the wearer unconscious and make them easier to rob, while others feared they would pick up an infection."

I too was worried about these issues when I got my first helmet. There are still days I worry that I have just been lulled into a false sense of security and the bad Juju will eventually be activated.

Does anyone know of an effective hex to remove any possibility of this happening? Is there some sort of magic powder or salve that I can apply? I would prefer to avoid animal sacrifice, but if it is unavoidable, I will stop at the Humane Society on the way home for a fresh cat.

Also, is there something I can take as a prophylactic treatment for the potential head infection issue? Perhaps lining the helmet with palm fronds or pampas grass would work?

If this has already been answered, I'm sorry, but I looked through the archives and didn't find anything.

Bill

(Is it just me, or should this be moved to the "apparel" section of the KV?)

I have a pet armadillo that I am trying to train to "STAY" on the top of my head.

It is truly a "green" helmet - though PETA might be upset with me... and there's this little problem when he gets frightened and suddenly GRIPS my skull and pees on my head.
