Hey.. I love scooters! Is that an Aprilia? The Kymco "People 50" is a nice one too... and considerably cheaper. If I didn't have to ride some highway to get to work, I'd get one. I don't care for the big ones... like the Helix, that much. A long time ago, I had a Vespa. Before that, a Velo Solex... then a Peugeot moped. I think scooters are great and some day I'll own another! :)

Yep, an automatic 50cc EFI Scarabeo. I too had a Vespa about 40 years ago (smile). Had one of those 2-stroke 3 cylinder Mach (?) Kawasaki in 72 too. Supposed to be the fastest production bike at that point in time (low 11 sec. in the ¼”). Just think, that was over 30 years ago ... an 11 second bike!

White with blue stripes. 40 years ago... dates you... that's when I was just giving up the Velo Solex! Honda S90, Bultaco Metralla, Suzuki GT250 and 550, Suzuki GS750 (starting to get civilized now!), RD350... the list goes on. Wish I still had every one of 'em! Didn't know Jack back then... but they sure were fun times! I might have trouble finding any of those old bikes now (particularly the Metralla).... but a new scooter would bring back some neat feelings. <IMG SRC=">

A lightly massaged RD350 can be a real hoot to ride. I had a 75(RD350) that had the 76 RD400 Daytona rolling stock and brakes on it. I had (J)Konsinski's old man bore and massage the chambers and ports some. There is another story and a half, he specialized in stuffing the big 'zuk 1100 motors into the little 750 frames. Pure evil when he was finished with them. That was some 14 years ago though. I still like my S1 though and loving the look of the black on black XB12R.

Yeah... the RD350 *was* a real hoot!! I built a "cafe racer" RD that I loved to ride in the country... in search of the big multis! ;) 'Course... that was a *long* time ago!

I am well aware of the valve train limitations. I was not thinking so much in higher rpms but getting there quicker. Larger bore (ca. 4in.) can compensate in part for the loss of torque inherent in a lesser stroke.

TQ: You are correct about the veracity of the HP. I have no independent confirmation of the actual #. Not sure I believe you can outrun an R1 up to 120. My bike made near 100 HP when I 1st assembled it (now after 20,000 miles it has around 90 some). The many times I have raced against my buddy's 916, the moment he shifted into 2nd he passed me. The speed was under 90.

This time-to-power issued dawned on me while visiting Daytona one time. I hooked up with some people for a ride that took us across the peninsula. Along came a beautiful S2 with a Turbocharger. The owner proudly displayed his dyno chart showing 120 HP. We accelerated together several times and I could always outrun him.

A Dynojet dynamometer measures horsepower literally by measuring how long it takes to spin up a drum. So-called "time to power" will show up as more power on this type of dyno.

My guess is you're seeing discrepancies between horsepower and acceleration due to gearing. Gearing has a huge effect on acceleration and will not show up on a dyno.

I know gearing is the reason my friend's 916 is weak off the line. 1st is way too high for street use. In fact I've read in magazines comments to that effect. "too high 1-3. too low 4-6". I should someday learn about the dyno physics you mention. In the case of the S2 I think the low compression and turbo lag had something to do with it, as well as the 29 front pulley known to be fitted to those.

I frequently ride an S4 that while somewhat heavy and clumsy (compared to my S1) never ceases to impress me on how fast that motor spins up when you whack it.

Not much to know actually ... it's just a big heavy drum riding on some pillow block bearings. There's a little optical sensor, not unlike the timing plate sensor in your nose cone, and a tab coming off the axle that passes through the sensor once per revolution. So the dyno electronics is just sensing each revolution and knowing the drum mass, it can calculate horsepower from the acceleration rate and rpm.

You are assuming I would be using my tired Buell. That is not what I had in mind to bring. remember the argument was its performance against an inline 4.

WOW! That bike has 100lbs of torque or more from 3,800-6500RPM! Very impressive. I've not seen too many charts like that one.
