As a professional Mac user, I am more than a little fatigued by Job's endless arrogance and unfulfilled promises.

Yeah It does get a bit tedious but as Spock said "Only nixon could go to China"

1. No iPod

It's really not now, Apple was going to put a multi gig chip in it anyway , so a controller chip and software wasn't that much of a leap from either a financial point or engineering point and it falls in line with the "chef of the future" marketing craze that has had a stranglehold on the tech sector entire for to long now.

2. Cost reduced to comparable data phones

Probably second generation or third the latest(10 to 20) months will see prices become more competitive though they will not match their direct competitors at the discount level ever. Apple is a hardware company first and profit margins are the name of the game in Steve's ball club.

3. reasonable service plan

This should fall in line #2 as lower cost iPhone will mean a little more margin for reseller combined with competition between carriers for similar services will level the field a bit.

4. 3G enabled

Apple is always slow to adopt the "latest and greatest" technologies until they are sure the "Horse is broken". This was true with Bluetooth, USB, Wi-FI Protocols so 3G is coming.

5. Debugged

I knew you had a sense of humor jon!

6. Thinner

2nd gen will see marginal size reduction , Third gen will have Jobs once again saying "I believe this is the best thing we have ever done" ( that would be five times for those of you counting)

I really do not desire a iPhone at this time as there is no justification for me to have one whatsoever, But then again that argument didn't wash when I was at the Buell dealer so I guess i better start having those mac-cheese dinners now if I want to make the third gen introduction!

I suspect though that the Curve will not have a headphone port (like the Razr). If so, you won't be able to play music through your car system.

I thought that if the "phone" had bluetooth it could communicate with a bluetooth enabled car? I must have misunderstood some commercial I saw.

Willys CJ3A - neat rig. Had a CJ2A, probably should have kept it but couldn't stand to keep it here in Wisconsin and watch it dissolve in the winter salts so I traded it off to a guy heading to Colorado where it's now doing what it was designed to do.

I like some of the Blackberry features but my current cell service provider doesn't offer the Blackberry I'd be interested in.

That Blackjack looks interesting.

On my side gig, real estate sales, I recently showed an estate sale house. On the way out the door after the shoppers had left I noticed a rotary dial telephone still plugged into the wall outlet. I just smiled and wondered how many people even know about them anymore.

iPhone, like Playstation3, will soon be sitting on shelves unsold once the initial frenzy is over. Their TV commercial is interesting though in the way it reminds me of a well rehearsed Carney sales promotion or one of those State Fair knife sales shows where they cut a can then some wood then a tomato. Ah yes, it's all in the show, the big show, and it's amazing to see in a way the way the market can still be brought to a frenzy to some limited extent and the zoom lens only shows a cropped image of the situation and leaves out the 1000:1 ratio of people not in line compared to people in line. Such is life in the new millenium, whatever that means anymore.

Somewhere in this I'm on-topic.

I miss my old IMTS phone . . . you'd pick up the handset. . .squeeze th trigger and if you were lucky enough to have guessed the right channel . . .

"Central"

"Yes, this is YP-80895. . . I'd like to call. . . "

"Hold on, I'll put you through"

I'd say, in a good month, I was able to get 3 to 5 calls out and maybe 2 in.

Those were the days.

: )

quote:

At this time, before the reign of cellular, the state of the art in mobile phones was the IMTS system. A Motorola IMTS ‘Pulsar’ phone cost $6,000.00 in 1982 dollars. The Boston IMTS systems, one operated by NE Telephone, the other by a private RCC, had maybe 14 channels total to service 4000 users. The capital investment to erect and operate an IMTS system was approximately five million dollars, and the licensing hurdles were enormous. There was never a third RCC IMTS in Boston.

This is what I've got.
similar to your desire for an updated "bar" phone.

it holds 80 songs and battery life is good.

By the way . . . that's the "new" model. Mine was vacuum tube, weighed about 45# and was "seafoam green".

Gads. . . I am getting old.

I remember the scuttle-butt about "cellular telephones". They were being tried out in Dallas and L.A. so I quick buzzed into a place in Carrollton, TX and had one put in the car. . . . $2700!

And now you guys are griping about a $499 "does all" and is everything but a replacement for the family dog . . . I'm old fashioned. . . all I want to do on a phone is talk.

: )

When everyone else was getting "mobile" phones, my parents got me a bag phone... remember? Basically a receiver plugged into a lead-weighted purse sporting an antenna. Needless to say, it didn't go inside with me.

I dig the iPhone, but I'm curious why they bothered adding all the media gizmos when it'll take you a day and a half to download anything with the G2 tech? A friend of mine works for a big cell phone outlet, and despises all the hype. He hates the unit.

I got so much crap on my cell phone now, I can't stand it. I got 100 pictures of the inside of my pocket because of the damn camera on it already.

I just want my phone to talk to other phones.

Interceptor,
I also have the SLVR... This phone has the best battery I have ever seen in a cell phone. Mine is over a year old, and I still only need to charge it about once a week.
I have been really happy with this phone overall.

I thought that if the "phone" had bluetooth it could communicate with a bluetooth enabled car? I must have misunderstood some commercial I saw.

It can. My TL has the Bluetooth Handsfree system, but the system doesn't recognize the phone for music input. You either have to have a model specific wiring loom installed in the input jack of the head unit or you have to run the headphone out to input in via hard wire if your head unit has one of those. The third option is what I have had to do on mine is run directly into the tape.

If you're car recognizes Bluetooth enabled phones for music playback, you are golden.

I just picked up the AT&T 8525. I was looking at the I-Phone and the Blackberry, didn't like them. This thing is cool, should be here by Monday. I hope.

While watching the idiot box last night -- two commercials ran back-to-back

1 Huge-o-rama big screen tv capable of entertaining people three blocks down the street -- truely the only way to enjoy television, as anything lesser declares your lack of manliness to all and sundry

2 lil teeny phone with a liler, teenier screen to watch tv on, as anything less zoomy declares . . . . . . . .

good phun, ain't it?

I got mine this evening. I had a softball game at 6:30 and by the time I got to my local AT&T store, the line was down to 20 or so people (about 8pm). They offered me the last phone in stock, a 4GB - no dice, I wanted an 8 GB. Knowing the local Apple Store was staying open until 12pm, I figured they would have a much better stock on hand, at least it was worth a 15-minute drive to check it out. I got to the store, no line out front, 50 or so people inside, took 5-min to get to the counter, plenty of phones in stock and plenty of people working.

Just got my AT&T account transfered over to the new phone and I have been playing with it and all I can say is WOW. What a great device, totally worth the hype IMHO.

Just another gadget! I don't like the standard no frills cell phone I have now. Bring it along to use in emergencies, but otherwise the thing remains powered off. The iPhone is a neat gadget that bundles a lot of features into a tiny package, but is still an electronic leash.

got mine yesterday. it is the coolest phone i have ever had. i have to have a cell phone for work. so i can't get away from having a "electronic leash". but if you have to have one this thing is sweet.
the clarity of the phone calls is very good, and you don't have to listen to all of your voice mails just the ones that you want. for me that feature save me a lot of time.

Too many gadgets, not enough time to really live. No thanks. Better to interface with family and friends face to face, get out for a ride, make apple pies, play acoustic guitar, be thankful, etc.

Electronic leash?

I guess none of you carry cell phones while you are enjoying the world around you. Yeah, right.

My work Blackberry is an electronic leash, the iPhone is a stunning and enjoyable pdevice, much like my CityX.

Lets see, it syncs my Calendar and Contacts with my Mac, so I always have them on me (my Blackberry doesn't sync right with my work Mac). I have a video iPod, which is nice for those times I am sitting in Coach on some business trip (yes it is true, I can't always be on my Buell) and want to watch a movie, but don't want to pull out my laptop, same for the Wi-Fi interface, allows me to leave the computer behind in many situations, and hey my cell phone just died, so I needed a new phone anyway.

And I can still interface with my family, heck my wife is 9 mos pregnant and if I am not around at the moment "the time comes", I think having a way for her to get a hold of me is a good thing.

Those of you out enjoying the world might benefit from one of these new fangled "leashes".

I use the cheapest pile of crap Motorolla there is. I too am looking at a phone where I can access internet and company email, talk, see video and use a PDA. I'm not jumping on the iPhone yet, but come Christmas, if the right upgrades are made and maybe the price drops a bit, I'll probably be on one.

One thing nice about the phone "leash", you can put it on silent and answer it when you want! Hell, put it on vibrate, slide it into your front pocket and every time the little woman beckons, you have a small slice of enjoyment

Not to bust any balls or picking on anyone........ billions of babies have been born with out the use of cell phones. The greatest achievement of all time, sending a man to the moon was completed successfully ,sans any cell phones. The operation mgr of the local Chevy garage doesn't have a cell phone and runs the biz just fine with out one.....ditto for all his cross country trips. A happy and free bird if there ever was one. Oh, I don't condemn cell phone, just the over rate'ness of the thing. Live by the sword(cell phone),die by the sword(cell phone) idealism. Yes, I have a cell phone, an old Star Tac that makes and receives calls. Simple as that and nothing more is needed.......or wanted. Prolly average one a day at a couple minutes time. Handy, but nothing that can't be dealt with in other means if I was "without signal".Yep, costs me about a buck a call. Not worth it, but convenient. The gadgetry is all about money and LOTS of it. There's a reason they sell them at booths in any damned store that will allow it..........MONEY! Anything goes to make you think you need one. Anything goes to make you burn up minutes and get you to buy a better package............for more money of course.Oh well.......rant off and set to vibrate..............

I played with one on Saturday (not mine) and have to admit that it is bad ass. The owner said that there is talk of the next release having gps. The current one has gmaps, but doesn't show your current position. I would think that it would be easy to do w/ cell tower triangulation.

I surfed the web with it and watched a few of Bruce Campbell's Old Spice commercials (check them out if you haven't seen them) on youtube and was very impressed w/ the performance. It loads faster than my PC w/ a wireless connection.

I think $600 for the 1st run of an already outdated technology is just crazy, especially when rumor has the second rendition with all the quirks worked out in a mere 6 months. I guess some people have more money than patience.

I probably should post here, as I see this thread becoming the next ft_b watch thread, but I have a huge addiction for wireless toys.

I played with the iphone the first night, for the most part it does live up to the hype. I will not get one until full exchange support is there.

As for other wireless toys I have quite a collection. Got my 1st cell phone when I was 14, and haven't stopped since. I still have my original #. Now I 4 additional lines, including one dedicated for the bike.
My collection consists of ~100 phones the include some really rare models.
Ironically I still haven't added an original motorola brick.

Next toy might be an iridium phone. I have used them before and the geek factor makes them mighty tasty. I know I don't need one, but I want one.

Court, those IMTS phone are cool. I recently saw one of the very last made brief case models on Ebay, it was out of my $ range.

That sounds heavenly. I have a Sprint Treo 700wx (Windows Mobile), and it's the worst excuse for a phone I've ever had the misfortune to use. It crashes at least once a day, if not more. People call me, and it just gets stuck ringing until I yank the battery. My calendar constantly sets itself 1 hour off from my actual time zone. It tells me I have voicemail when I don't. It tells me I have no voicemail when I do. It claims to be in service but won't make any calls until I reboot. I just want to smash it up into little bits more and more every day.
