Let this be a lesson to everybody:

A retired service manager? WTF?

It says it has a Kooks pipe - maybe bonehead wanted that pipe more than he wanted to corner.

Service manager is not the same as a chassis designer - they don't teach chassis design at service manager school.

Oh my, that's pretty terrifying.

You suppose those 8 bidders saw that?

They could of at least welded a U shaped piece going under the header... still a terrible idea, but a slightly less terrible one.

What's really bad is that there are 8 bids on that bike. I didn't even notice the cut the first time I looked at it.
Should this be reported to eBay? I mean if the frame was cut like that it's going to be severely weakened and any insurance company would consider it a totaled vehicle.

It's a Kooks pipe alright, but it's for an S1!! Scary sh*t!

What a bonehead.

A better idea for repair would be to re-triangulate the pivot back to the down tube, as close to the seat base as you could get. That would hold it in plane, although the link to the headstock ain't so great. It wouldn't be much worse that a U shaped tube (a spring) in that missing section.

The thing is, to do the mod, I would want to add the new tubing into place before cutting the old support away, to have more holding the pivot point on the correct plane.

However - I have never been a service manager, so what do I know?

I don't understand what the problem is. He said it is in flawless condition. This must not be a flaw. You arrogant sumbitches. Who are you to question a Harley Davidson service manager about customizing a Buell?

There's actually only one bidder. There must have been a reserve. There used to be a way to send messages to bidders. I feel like I should warn the guy.

Absolutely has been cut. AND CAPPED!

I saved the picture, then zoomed into the spot of the frame in question.

Do it yourself. Save this picture to your disk, then zoom in to the area in the red square.

A suggestion to Purpony...call the seller and let him know you are calling ebay to pull this "safety compromised motorcycle" off e-bay!

What a stupid, stupid thing to do. Bike is completely useless at this point.

from the e-bay ad...

2002 Buell X1 Custom, Carbon Fiber, Baddest one in the land. Not for the Timid!

Got that right...baddest one in the land. I've never seen another like this one. Not for the timid...unless you enjoy slapping your face against the pavement!

I tried to report the listing but, Ebay is only interested in specific, categorized things. I couldn't find anywhere that I could actually describe what the issue is.

I emailed the seller and asked if he was going to disclose the cut frame. I wasn't very nice about it. The plan is to get him to report the message to Ebay so I can get them involved.

It's too bad, really. That one is destined to get parted out or chopped. (The whole bike, not just the frame: ) )

If the sale goes through, I am imagining the new owner finding his way here and posting pictures of his new bike...and finding out his bike has been a topic for a while.

On a related note, I seem to remember the 4 speed Westwinds had an offending tube that prevented primary cover removal - and IIRC, I have seen at least one with a similar cut frame for that reason.

As they say, there's an ass for every seat. You should have to take a test to buy a SawzAll, I swear.

The one thing to never do is mess with the integrity of the frame.. I will look into this I believe their is a way to report sellers but it is a little risky I am going to win the bid and not pay for it and when he opens up a case than I will have E bay's attention. Besides it will keep anyone from ignorantly buying garbage... This is wrong I have been doing ebay sales for 2 years now and its experiences like these that give us all a bad name...

Um....should have cut the EXHAUST.

Maybe that's just me.

Or...maybe he *wanted* it to wallow like a worn out FLH...felt more at home on it that way?

Oh wow, bet that handles funny, wonder why he couldn't have taken the little bit of extra time to get a better bend radius on that exhaust. That's like cutting a hole in your fridge to make room for a six pack rather than organizing it so it will fit.

He bought the exhaust, and bought the wrong one. He didn't fab it.

When his big hammer wouldn't make it fit, he grabbed the Sawzall - probably bitching the whole time about crappy aftermarket stuff not fitting right.

It's really a shame, that would be an awesome bike, but t's far overpriced for the amount of work to make it right.

That's a real nice bike with a lot of nice add-ons. What a shame. How could anyone be so stupid to cut the structure that holds the bike just to fit a the header. That bike is no longer roadworthy.
Could the missing piece be welded back?

HAH, file that one under....'man in Florida does _____"

I sent the seller a message as well: Hi, just in case you are not aware, or for any potential buyer not paying very close attention, would it be too big of a deal to ask for you to disclose in the listing that a section of structural frame tubing was cut out to make the exhaust fit? Sure, you may ride it all day long like that, but the reality is, the frame of the bike you are attempting to sell is in a very dangerous condition as listed.

It could, but that is thinwalled 4130, so should be tig welded. I'd also want to machine spuds to go inside the tubing and build the whole area up. If you just butt welded it, it would very likely fail about 1" up from one of the repairs.

It would be really difficult make it an invisible repair and have the repair still be structurally sound. I would leave two nice, visible welds if it were mine. Moreover, the bike would have to come apart to make that fix. At that point, you'd be money ahead buying a frame off'n ebay from some mouth breathing Redneck Chopper builder.

@kalali, yeah a new piece of tubing could be welded back in, and I personally would ride it that way, but would defo disclose that info at time of sale...
