I have been into cruisers for a long time, and have always liked the Buell's from afar. Yesterday I found one on CL with 24k on it and the exhaust bolts broken. After a little surfing I found this was a common problem and went to look at the bike. It is a red and white X1 in fairly good shape. Needs a bath, and there is a scuff on the top of the tank from a tree branch, but otherwise in good shape. New rear tire, and the front one is about 25% left. Guy wanted 2500, I left with the bike for 1200.00. Ordered the Jim Tool for the studs already. Opinions on what this thing is really worth? The tank filler says limited edition, number 50 of 800, 2000 racing X1 Red Stripe. Did I do good?

What is so special about the racing stripe models? Anything or just a moniker?

Not showing off, truly a noob when it comes to these bikes. Always liked them, and took a chance on this one. I'm hoping to do a working restoration on it and bring it back to better than stock. Glad to hear I did well.

Anything I should look for right off the bat on this bike that might be an issue besides the exhaust I already know about?

Sorry, one more question. With 24k on the bike, do I need to worry about the motor anytime soon? I'm use to my old Road King that would go 80k or better.

Killer deal! Make sure you have the dogbone muffler hanger or there will be more broken studs to come. @16k my motor still runs and feels new, as long as you change the oil every 3k, should be fine. Exhaust mounting is a pain in the butt, once it's sound you will love the bike. Make sure you use new gaskets, welcome to BWB.

Screamin' deal on a limited edition bike.

The Race Stripe (Red or Blue), Millennium, and Carbon Fiber Extreme's were all just cosmetic LE bikes. Nothing hi-perf in the suspension or engines but they were all sharp bikes.

Just looking at this photo, YOUR bike has the Buell Race Exhaust (header and muffler) so probably has the race ignition as well. Looks gorgeous for a bike with 24K miles. I don't recall if the polished tail and tail screens were stock for that model. The Pegs were an inexpensive Buell upgrade part that I think came stock on that bike.

It's cool that you've got such an unmolested model with the LE gas cap too. Very nice find!

Keep in mind that this is a sportster engine with a lot more than stock output, so it can have troubles if it's run at high revs a lot. Anticipate possible leaky seals/gaskets for rocker boxes, starter, primary, cam chest, etc... if they've not been done they will go bad but with the higher miles they've probably been replaced with updated parts and will hopefully be good to go.

Oil pump drive gear and engine main seal are things to keep an eye on, there are upgraded replacements from HD for both these items which can wear poorly and go out. You Don't wan the oil pump gear to go, the main seal is more of an inconvenience than a major issue. Keep in mind these are not huge failure concerns, just things to be aware of and keep an eye out for. Run the belt a bit loose, and the primary chain is suggested a little looser than the manual recommends as well. Others here know that number by heart and will hopefully chime in.

On the exhaust, once you've replaced the studs mount everything up loose then tighten from back to front, or front to back a bit at a time and give things a wiggle as you are doing it. This will keep the studs or front exhaust hanger from loading up as a stress point and breaking (again) in the future.

You found my personal favorite X1 model at a outstanding price.

Oh yeah, your rear shock is bad, or will go bad at some point or other. Get an owners manual and set your suspension for your weight, if you've done it right and it still rides like a high horse power pogo stick it will need to be replaced. Racetech rebuilds them or you can spend $800-1400 on a Works Performance or Penske shock.

Thanks guys, that is exactly what I was looking for. I will check it all out as I wait for the jig tool to arrive.

I did see an ignition under the seat that said race only, I assume that is what you were talking about.

Ebay for a manual I assume?

X1 Manual still for sale at some Buellparts places, but more $ than one can find them on ebay. Maybe not much more.

One of the sponsors, Twinmotorcycles, is showing a new line of parts coming out just for X1 models.

YOU NEED THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL, it will be the best thing you have bought for the bike.

Owner's manual will give you basic set-up info for suspension, tire pressures, oil and all that. You can ask that here but it's useful to have on hand.

As Neil said, "YOU NEED THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL, it will be the best thing you have bought for the bike."

The factory manual is exceptional.

I ordered the factory manual tonight.

Good to know on the tail section, I guess if I am going to put it back to stock that will have to be switched out. decisions decisions
