I can't stand the pounding in my head from the V&H can on my M2. I also do not like riding with earplugs so i am going back to the stock muffler.

Any opinions on how much of a hit I will take in the horsepower department?

99 M2
stage 2 head work
1250 kit
536 cams
42 Mikuni
race air filter
roller rockers

I'm hoping I will pick up some low end torque as a trade off.

When was the last time you repacked the muffler?

First time I ever heard that complaint! V&H is not known as one of the louder cans, so you indeed may need a repacking.

I don't believe putting your stock muffler on would be a good move! You will have way to much air flow restriction with the stock can on it! Re- pack it if you can't live with it but I wouldn't even think of putting the stocker back on! Just my .002

Try one of the new style Buell Super Trap style muffles. It might be a search to find one now, I believe they are discontinued. You can add or subtract diffuser plates to come up with a compromise. I've got both and the Super Trap is what I run now. But I also agree, you just may need to re-pack the V&H. American Sport Bike sells the kit. My V&H was perfectly empty, except the baffle pipe. No packing at all after 3500 miles.

Cyclonemick is right. Way to much air in for a stock muffler. Repack or super trap is best option.

Phillip, go for it! If your not liking the noise you will enjoy the more mellow tone of the stock exhaust, and will enjoy the bike more. I recent took the V&H off my S2 and put the stock muffler back on. I like it, but to me riding is more than just making noise and top end power.

love my stocker for the lack of evil looks and attitudes

i would like a turn out on it tho, to wake up the slumbering cagers that encroach on my space

loud pipes can save lives, but most of the time, they just make people pissssd

What head pipe is on it now? I'm guessing stock or maybe a X1/S3 header?

Its got
stage 2 head work
1250 kit
536 cams
42 Mikuni
race air filter
roller rockers

and no race header? (V&H won't fit on a race header w/o serious mods, stock muffer certainly won't)

I got a used M2 with V&H, and very quickly replaced it with a stock muffler. Later I tried commuting with the SuperTrapp IDS, both with 12 discs and then with 8 discs, and eventually replaced it back to the stock muffler. I can feel the power loss from 12 discs to stock. But it's still plenty fast, no question about it.

The original question goes along with the engine simulator thread. To really pick up the most at bottom end I'd think you'd have to swap cams and maybe the carb?

Go get a 7mm magnum rifle and 100 rounds of ammo...go to the range and pop off all the ammo with no ear plugs or muffs....

Your exhaust will be magically made quiet.

Hey, worked for me

BUELLers:

1998 and later OEM Muffler ...

PRODUCE IMPROVE(outlet on right rear end) and you have a LOW END TORQUE muffler that is much QUIETER than the BIG $$$$$ after market stuff ...

Now the FACTORY RACE CANS are another story !!!

MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!!

Josh...it has a stock head pipe. 21/2 inch collector with the V&H slip on.

I've repacked it three times but not with the kit from American Sport Bike. I might try that but I really think going back with the stock pipe and taking the hit on peak hp will happen.

I am liking the idea of running quiet more and more.

I've got the Supertrapp that has the disks inside the outer can. Not sure if that's the new style or not. When I took it apart last fall, there was no packing material left in there. I repacked with 4 cycle packing material from the local dirt bike shop.
I guess my point is that these aftermarket mufflers need to be repacked on a regular basis.

I should have said 4 stroke packing material. The dirt bike shop had both 2 stroke and 4 stroke.

I have the V&H as well, repacked it a few miles ago. It is still a loud pipe to me. Would rather have a quieter pipe that doesn't harm performance.

I've got a V&H, I think its a great slip-on, but it does need to be repacked far too often (all absorption mufflers with fiber packing do though).

I repacked mine with some very course stainless steal fiber (similar to steal wool) that was almost a year ago and its still going strong.

BTW, I got the idea from the D&D pipes that do the same thing.

Buellistic,
Did you add a right outlet to your otherwise stock 1998-on muffler? The OE muffler outlet an the left has its pipe going well into the muffler.. maybe half way. Does the right outlet just weld to the outer shell in the rear? Thanks in advance for the details on how to do it... Regards, Olbolt

I put the stock muffler on my 2002 M2.

It does not make as much power on top as the Race Pipe but it is great in low to mid-range where I ride most of the time anyway.

The stock muffler actually seems like a very good compromise between noise and performance.

On my X1, the stock muffler caused a very noticeable "dip" in torque right around 2500-3000 RPM.
