It's a little like the argument I have that "intelligent design" isn't science, it's philosophy. ( or religion, but not science )

The difference is, if it is how solar radiation affects weather. I can do experiments, or at least make a hypothesis and test it against observed facts. I can't observe a hidden phenomena like chemtrails, since I can't tell them from contrails.

Likewise, I can test/observe red shifts and galactic population patterns looking back in time, but I can't ask an intelligent designer for his opinion, and claim to get an answer... and still get taken seriously. ( the asking part, that I can do all the time, and if I don't ask aloud, no one will even tease me about it.... )

Sifo has it right, sunspots, solar winds, Earths magnetic field, and cosmic ray formation of high altitude clouds seems to have a profound effect on weather.

Bear in mind I'm not arguing that there is no "designer". I'm just arguing that you can't prove it by experiment, so you have to use other means to make the case.

Ditto Chemtrails. Not really buying it, but I haven't tried to disprove it either.

It's easy to say AL Gore is a Con man because he makes a hundred million off oil companies and argues he didn't. He got rich on fear mongering and selling indulgences. Fact.

It's harder to say that mister X is trying to rule the world with an enormous conspiracy to put chemicals in airline fuel, or hide additive injection gear in cramped, often inspected airliners, when I don't know who he is and how much more rich he's become....

Commentary on study

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamestaylor/2013/02/13 /peer-reviewed-survey-finds-majority-of-scientists -skeptical-of-global-warming-crisis/

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/02/global _warming_scientific_consensus_debunked.html

actual study.

http://oss.sagepub.com/content/33/11/1477.full

It's a bit dense, full of jargon, and biased in a not too subtle way.

From the Forbes article.
One interesting aspect of this new survey is the unmistakably alarmist bent of the survey takers. They frequently use terms such as “denier” to describe scientists who are skeptical of an asserted global warming crisis, and they refer to skeptical scientists as “speaking against climate science” rather than “speaking against asserted climate projections.” Accordingly, alarmists will have a hard time arguing the survey is biased or somehow connected to the ‘vast right-wing climate denial machine.’

Another interesting aspect of this new survey is that it reports on the beliefs of scientists themselves rather than bureaucrats who often publish alarmist statements without polling their member scientists. We now have meteorologists, geoscientists and engineers all reporting that they are skeptics of an asserted global warming crisis, yet the bureaucrats of these organizations frequently suck up to the media and suck up to government grant providers by trying to tell us the opposite of what their scientist members actually believe.

It's not real science, taking a survey of scientists to determine reality. That's what the politicians do to make excuses for their actions.
This study doesn't try to do that, it's more of a bitter bitch about how the Pravda is being subverted.

In simple words.... It makes no difference how many people believe something to the truth. The majority may be wrong, it may be right, but the majority does not make anything true. Objective reality is real. Polling people does not change that. ( and if Objective reality is not real.... that gives me license to do as I please. That's the real reason for subjectivist philosophy. An excuse to do what you want. Period. )

If you change the theory to fit the data, it's science. If you change the data to fit the theory, it's fraud. ( and politics ) M. Mann & the Hadley CRU change the data.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-21468116

Rocks falling from the sky. Absurd!

Not all scientists in ancient times disbelieved in Meteors. Many believed that rocks fell, but not the extraterrestrial origin.

http://books.google.com/books?id=F7pZfLUoHJIC&pg=P A215&lpg=PA215&dq=meteorites+thought+myth&source=b l&ots=vNdHloGdIL&sig=jh9Pqxg2jT8sCZRo7L_EqH-WKQg&h l=en&sa=X&ei=ir4eUaX0BZOK0QHNrIG4DA&ved=0CEIQ6AEwB A#v=onepage&q=meteorites%20thought%20myth&f=false

Near hit from a bigger one... "Just miss" is less upsetting to most, and "near miss" is inaccurate. "near miss" is a hit.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-2144 2863

What if it didn't miss?

Aprox...... Barringer Crater sized hole. Nuclear bomb sized bang. Falling rock for hundreds of miles. The bigger question is where? An ocean strike is most likely, so big bad wave. Better if it hits land, usually. A direct city hit? Hitting Albany NY would kill far less people than hitting offshore east of Baltimore. ( and be preferred a LOT by people in NYC. ) Hitting in Central Park NYC might kill more than the hypothetical hit off Baltimore, but I doubt it. ( I'd have to do the math )

For maximum terror factor, ( east coast ) a hit in the Canary Islands triggering a worse event. http://rense.com/general13/tidal.htm

Maximum West coast might be either off Oregon, triggering a quake + Tsunami, ( maybe even the "Big One" ) or simply setting off the "Big One" Harry Reid is waiting for to make his land speculation waterfront property. ( like Lex Luthor, but without the charm )

Any way, most of us lived through this weeks rocks from the sky ( or zipping past at speed )
Hooray.

Atomic power question...

http://what-if.xkcd.com/29/

A bit on Meteor impact.

http://what-if.xkcd.com/20/

I read that the recent Russian one broke up and hit a lake. Darn, I was hoping for a cool crater.

Note in Russia, the majority of injured seems to be from broken glass. "Duck and Cover" is a rational response to flaming objects dropping in from space. What if that hadn't been a rock, but was instead a fusion bomb?

When the bright light comes, look away. The Bright Light is not your friend. ( the Atomic age version of "When you pull the pin, Mr. Grenade is no longer your friend" )

Just look at the EU situation. In the '70's I lived/worked on a dairy farm. 50% of our production was wasted, literally poured down the drain. Why? Inefficient French farmers were actively subsidized by the Common Agricultural Policy of the EEC (EU) which meant that prices were kept high by destroying our product. A ridiculous scenario. It nearly drove our farm out of business. Unfortunately, market manipulation of prices/productivity through the CAP means that this situation exists today & not only for milk. Get rid of the subsidies and let farmers farm. Those that can will prosper those that can't will not.

There are things that folk of a "certain age" remember that no one else in history will.

As one who grew up in the shadow of the Mushroom Cloud I was taught long ago what to do when the Bright Light came.

( literally, not figuratively, I lived next to SAC hq. The radiation zones from nuclear tests swept over my home. My Aunt's had to stop using rainwater to develop film in their photo studio. It ruined pictures. )

The lessons of Fission bombs has practical application in an age of meteor explosions. Thousands were injured in Russia because they watched the light show, thousands of video's are on the web. Too few knew what we did in the late 50's and early 60's.

I won't address the jobs/economics aspect here, seems like religion to me. I fail to see the science.

As a political strategy to punish America for being productive and wealthy, it's pretty smart. By increasing the demand for natural gas this may keep prices rising at a time when market forces would make them drop.

I have doubts about the Chemtrail aspect, believing that the flu is just a Chinese biowar tactic, planned or not. Plagues from China are very traditional. Happen every year, and have for thousands of years. See Europe after the re-conquest of "western Rome" by Constantinople in the 6th century, ( 1/3 of the population ) or the 1918 epidemic that killed more than the War to End All Wars.

correlation

From the time (long ago!) when I studied at the Helsinki University of Technology (now part of the Aalto University) I remember an even better (because simpler) example of point 3 in ‘The Causes of Correlation’: At least in Finland, there’s a clear correlation between ice cream consumption and deaths through drowning, with both peaking in summer. So which causes which? Neither; what happens is that warm weather makes people eat more ice cream and also go swimming and boating much more, increasing their opportunities to drown.

I'm a fervent believer in Climate Change. It's always happened, and always will, until the Sun gets big & red & boils away the seas. Expect slow cooling after that with periodic burps as the Sun evolves down to a cinder.

Anthropomorphic Climate Change also makes perfect sense. I know we affect the weather in large and small ways. Overgrazing, ( Sahara ) irrigation, ( Imperial Valley, Kansas ) Urban heat islands, etc. etc.

Definitely a subject worth discussion and investigation as we hopefully learn more every day.

Massively alter our lifestyles to combat? Maybe. I've been loud about my doubts on the political side. "Science Is Settled" is always a lie.

We really HAVE to develop better forms of energy. Get off fossil fuels and into renewables, or supplies of near infinite size.

We can breed reactor fuel, and build safe reactors. Good medium term solution. Solar Powersats are about the only long term one I can think of. Windmills & ground based Solar will remain expensive and mostly used as low power off grid and extra power to the grid. alternatives.

Fusion is the holy grail right now, lots of Deuterium in the oceans. Not infinite....but, When the oceans are falling because we use so much hydrogen in our 6the gen fusion plants we're already screwed from population pressure..... Buncha bad movies on that subject, and few good ones. "Soylent Green" anyone?

Mostly I just like the cool stuff in the universe, Doubt any conspiracies, dislike Orthodoxy. "And yet it moves" Eppur si muove

"We really HAVE to develop better forms of energy. Get off fossil fuels and into renewables, or supplies of near infinite size."

'We' already have it, just that it is locked up in the 'Military Industrial Complex' some of your Presidents warned you about.

I guess it is all just conspiracy theory until one of 'them pretty Fox News readers' officially tells y'all, like them gals in Bob's post :-).

"They've got a lot of stuff on that internet."

Yeah, they sure have. 'twas much better in the olden days when all the facts were printed in Encylopaedia Brittanica' so's we all knew the same 'facts'. Stopped any confusion.

I've heard that 'they' add cognitive dissonance into the chemtrails and with fluoride in the drinking water.
