> I was doing just what you said Matt and pushing wide on the exit.

I've had the same problem on two bikes, and the solution was different each time. In order to make the bike turn in better, you need to increase the rake. That means either raising the back or lowering the front.

On my GSX-R, the front suspension was way too stiff, and softening the front compression fixed it. On my Ulysses, the rear was too soft. I let Bloke mess with it, and he ran the preload up at high as it would go. It cured the pushing, but I think it created another problem.

With the suspension soft, I could always count on my pegs dragging to warn me when I was leaning over too far. With the rear end all jacked up, I low sided (two years ago today, actually), and the pegs didn't touch until I was already off the edge of the tire.

I don't know if the stiff suspension contributed to the rear end sliding or not, but I couldn't get it out of my head after that. I put the preload back to the recommended factory setting, and now it pushes in the corners again, so I've been experimenting with tightening it up just a bit instead of all the way and with softening up the front.

I liked the way Charlie's Uly handled yesterday, so I'm going to try his settings and see if it feels better.

> and a reflector while still leaned over

Haha, I hate it when that happens. : ) I took a line across two lanes going up 129 a few weeks ago and hit a reflector right at the apex. The front wheel tucked, and my toe and peg hit the ground. I stayed on the throttle and it straightened right back out, but I think I left pucker marks on my seat.

On my Ulysses, the rear was too soft. I let Bloke mess with it, and he ran the preload up at high as it would go.

interesting .. when I ran wide in the turn I had been adjusting the preload as I was riding because it did'nt feel right and had gone the other way .. when I ran wide I had almost no preload in it .. 3 - 4 turns. I had started changing the settings a few weeks ago but I don't know why as I have no idea what I'm doing and had been really happy with the way it was. Found this thread just after I got the Uly http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/4 39281.html?1235762414 and had been mostly leaving it in the "2 up" setting because I was to lazy to change it. Found I really liked it that way. I'm also interested in the settings Charlie has. Putting it back to the two up setting till I get Charlie's settings.

I reallllly like that limit point idea. I don't think I have met Alan/English yet.

The front wheel tucked, and my toe and peg hit the ground. I stayed on the throttle and it straightened right back out Nice save

Edit .. that was not the thread but that was the settings I had been using. Must have been the same chart in an older post.

Uly is down...Anyone got a stator?

As soon as she is charging again for the LOW LOW PRICE of $3500 you can keep her.

Sorry, Charlie. I got nuthin' for a stator.

Odie, I'll be up riding for sure. A friend of mine's turning 40, so we're luring him up Saturday while his wife prepares a surprise party. Unfortunately that means I can't camp out this year, though.

I'll be headed up for Buelltoberfest. Not sure on whether I'm staying up there or riding up for the day or days. I sure could use some time away from the rat race in the mountains.

Happy belated B-Day Ann...

I reset my Uly suspension, and it feels a lot better. One of my forks had 1/4 turn less compression damping than the other, which probably didn't help.

I want the rear stiffer than the front, and I weigh 200 lbs, so I started out with the 230-260 lb settings from the service manual. From there, I added 1/4 turn to the rear compression damping, which brings it up to the 260-290 range, and I removed 1/4 from the front compression. That takes the front down to the 170-200 level.

It feels good in the limited riding I've been able to do so far. I'll have to get it up to the mountains before I can really tell what's up, though.

Well, it looks like I won't be able to make it up this fall. I am totally bummed. I really, truly need a break from life. I just started the UH-60 Mike Model Maintenance Test Pilot Course Thursday and it goes thru the end of October. Totally screws up my plans. Might have to come up in the spring.....bogus......

My cooling fan "problem" turned out to be nothing, I'd simply been taking much shorter trips without realizing the sudden change in riding habits. I guess a break-up will do that to you.

A more serious and Real problem: my transmission's got something going on with it. I'd been running Castrol 20-50 in the motor and trans because I was short on cash. I ran to probably 4500 miles before changing the primary fluid, and started to notice an intermittent difficulty in shifting, just harder than usual to shift, and clunkier, most especially when the motor is HOT like after sitting in traffic. I changed the primary fluid thinking these things are really sensitive to fluids and it must just be because the oil is old. After changing the fluid, the shifter is still stiff most of the time. I've put ~8K miles on the bike this year, and it's been my only mode of transport since May, so I'm really familiar with what it usually feels like, and somethings definitely off. I'm really worried I may have a bent shift fork or something, it's usually when going into 2nd or 3rd, and I seem to hit neutral by accident much more than before. I talked to an XT owner this past weekend who said the transmission is the weak link, and that you have to split the cases to get to it, so I'm pretty concerned at this point. Charlie, I wanted to see if you could ride it and see what you think.

If sticking with Formula+ in the primary will smooth it out, that'd be fantastic news, but right now I'm worried I may need to get into the transmission.

Any thoughts/experiences?

Incidentally, it's not a Great deal stiffer to shift, probably 10-20% harder, seemingly dependent on temperature, but it's intermittent, which is concerning me.

Twintalon - You're welcome to come by my place and compare your transmission to mine if you'd like. My XB kind of has the feel of a tractor, especially after I've ridden the 1125.

Odie - Sorry to hear you will not be able to make up.

Sanchez - When are you going to test out the Uly, or were you able to this weekend?

Be good, have fun and ride safe all.
Looking forward to the next time we can all get together.

I just wanted to introduce myself to the group as a new Buell rider. I’ve been riding since the early 60’s, but have just recently purchased my first Buell (2004 XB12r). I became interested in Buell several years ago when, by chance, I met a group of Bad Weather Bikers at TWO during a Buell Factory Demo Ride. I immediately felt a connection with the group, but didn’t pick-up a Buell until recently. Unfortunately, it seems activity on the BWB forum has declined, but I’d be interested in meeting local 3% BMC riders and hopefully, reviving some local interest. Please keep me in mind when you put together the next get together or ride.

in what seems like forever .. finally got a nice ride in. Sat.
Cathy and I decided to go for a ride and headed in a that-a-way direction .. ended up in Toccoa and then headed up to clayton, took warwomen to 28 up to highlands. Had lunch in the highlands and came back down 106 then across to alt-75. started to get hung-up in the traffic near Helen ( forgot about octoberfest )turned around and took another route. Felt good to go for a ride somewhere other than to work.

Ya'll have fun this weekend, maybe I can make it next year. I'll be missing the hills and riding with good friends.

WERA GNF is last weekend in Oct, but starts on thursday 27

Thursday - Vintage racing...very cool
Friday- 4 Hr Endurance race and a few sprint races that are make up races from bad weather at Barber last month.

I have the Uly on the bench ( fork seals ) .. I was headed up the the hills Sat. and the right fork puked out most of it's fluid all over my front wheel and brake.

I am sooooooooo jazzed about getting the hawk on the track. Lee came by the house Sunday and we fired up the hawk .. annoyed the neighbors for a good 20 min or more.

Lee is also wanting to take the hawk to the track, so I may see my son on the track before I get a track day, and I am very ok with that.

My other goal is to get the hawk street ready this month ( got to have a backup bike ) and it is just too much fun to have it just on the track.

Missed the notice for Buelltoberfest. Haven't been checking in for awhile, hit me up on FaceBook if you need to contact me... The Cyclone is tits up with a death rattle coming from the top end. Might be a wrist pin, might just be lifters taking a shit. Don't know. Haven't had time or money to tear it down. Been shoveling money to my lawyers to get my divorce wrapped up. Oddly enough it isn't going smoothly. Anyone throwning a Halloween party? I should have a get together after the new year once everything settles down, I'll keep ya posted!
