Got a call from Jim at 10:30...he's in Wytheville and bike is doing fine. Gonna dig into it when he gets home and see what the culprit is.

I got a brand new, in the box voltage regulator at home that will work on earlier XB's. I was going to list in the BadWeB classifieds as I know it won't work on my XT-BOLT. If Jim can make it home, and it's right for his bike, I'm sure we can work something out. I could even deliver it as I'm headed to Winston Salem this weekend.

I'll post pictures of it when I get home tonight,

Thanks Brankin. I believe 06 Ulys have their very own, unique to them, 3 phase charging system. This was abandoned in 07 because of reliability problems. : )

I am home, and very glad to be here. I popped both headlights last night in Chillicoth, OH, as I was pulling off to find a place to stay. I am very glad it waited that long to fail, as 35 is a very desolate road, and I would hate to ride it with no lights at night.

You know you've been on a long trip when you wake up and think "only 400 miles to go, I'm almost home." The bike started and ran just fine this morning, which had me wondering if the issue was some wiring/ground problem rather than the charging system. I rode it into Charleston, WV, where I picked up I-77. The police don't seem to notice/care that it doesn't have lights. I was in Virginia before I had cell service though.

My last fuel stop was in Winston-Salem. I was excited about getting home, I got on the bike and the battery wouldn't start it. I had cooked it because (I assume) my regulator isn't regulating. I tried push starting that (it was 87 degrees and I was in gear. That gets old FAST.) There was a guy there (a rider it turned out) who gave me a push, but we couldn't get it started. Then two ladies from the store came out and pushed, but that didn't work either. They had jumper cables though. We jumped the bike off the guys truck, and it started right up. I made it to Raleigh with out further incident. However, when I was waiting on the stoplight at the fair grounds my bike wanted to stall. Apparently the generator doesn't make enough power if the motor isn't spinning quickly. I hung a right on red, and kept making right turns until I got home.

Glad you were able to make it home Jim.
Are you running a voltage/charging indicator of any type? Just curious if you had any indications prior to the bulbs giving up?
This type problem has always been a concern of mine when on a long trip and under time constraints for work or whatever.

Well,I'm chomping at the bit to take my adventure to Florida this week end.Gonna spend the 4th week with my brother and family in Sunny hott Florida.I need a good long ride after missing Homecoming. The rest of the family are gonna ride in the cage,we have a wager of who will make the trip there first.
As many of you know my boys are as big as I am so I sacrificed the comfort of a cage to ride my bike to Florida on some parts of I95(smirk laugh)to give them plenty of room in the car.
Last time I made the trip I made it in 9hrs40min and went through a accident in Savanna. Google says 11 hr 17min depending on traffic and weather.
Hope to see some of the TABOO and Lakeland Florida Buellers. Will definitely see Mr. Lafayette.
Well Ill post picks when I get back Later all.

Jim,

FWIW, here are the pics:

VR 1

VR 2

From our friendly Buell parts guru (Froggy) I received this message regarding the Voltage Regulator:
"Vr - you want the .5a8 for 08+ models. 028a is for 03-07, different charging system"

I'll admit I don't know all that much about the XB's - other than what my '08 XB12X/XB12XT parts book tells me,

Thanks Brankin. That actually does appear to the the original VR used in 06 Ulys. It was updated to Y1302-02A8 to deal with the connectors melting.

Kristi,
I haven't been on here much. It's been a rough year. Cathy passed in mid-May. I'm thinking about trying to get into the Buelltober Fest program. Any room left for a single? Most likely I'd be able to be there Friday PM through Sunday AM. PM me if you need any info.
Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,

I'm so sorry to hear about Cathy. I can't even imagine what you've been through.

As for Buelltoberfest, right now cabin is full, but I do have one as a "maybe". I'll add you to the list and let you know something soon.

If you're interested in a ride sooner, we are heading to the mountains (Fancy Gap/Hillsville VA area) the weekend after July 4th. We will be riding all day Saturday, July 10th. Let me know if you'd like to join us and I'll get Carlos to post details, etc.

Kristi,
Actually that week and both weekends I'll be in your area. I'm going to spend some time on the Pamlico near Arapahoe / Oriental. My brother has a place down there and it's nice and quiet. I'm going to do some crabbing and flyfishing. I don't think a bike is coming as I have to haul some tools to build an arbor in exchange for rent. It's always something with family LOL.
Add me to the Buelltober list and we'll see what happens. I'd like to join you some time up in VA. It's a great place. I'm doing some thinking about where I want to live for awhile, and that area keeps coming up.

Kevin - anytime you're heading to Oriental on the bike, let us know. We like to head that way for ice cream and ride the Ferry out.

As for "mountain grass" we'll hopefully be going again in early August.

You have a few Buellers around you...Prior is in Kernersville and Twig is in Greensboro.

I've got you on C3 Central's list if someone has a change of plans or our "maybe" can't make it. I'll drop you a PM when I know more.

Mountain Grass soon!!! Having issues with Jeep wiring working with our trailer wiring. Not enough time to figure it out, so the Blast is staying home. I'll be riding 2-up with Carlos for the first time in a year! Will be interesting to see if my riding style with him has changed since I've been riding solo....hmmmm.

Well the Uly has been left with FB&D while we head to OH for a few days. Ferris has the keys...he might have to try the Uly on mountain roads.

The kids left with a plate of brownies that Denise had baked for them. Luke had one for breakfast! Its vacation, sure you can have a brownie for breakfast!!

Can't wait to see everyone next weekend for mountain grass!

I need brownies for breakfast!!

Ahhh, the memories of childhood vacations...

Good seeing you today, Prior! Too bad it was for so short of a time. Looking through the pics I took, a lot of cool cars had left by the time you got there, but what you did see was pretty darn cool none-the-less. Here's some info for the one I mentioned in Wilmington - with the Creeper Races:

If you need a Uly fix I have one (and gear) in the garage in Lebanon you are welcome to borrow... Leave the kids with grandparents and take a nice long ride.

The Little River cafe right there on the Little Miami burned down, but I heard they rebuilt it. Haven't been down to see it since, but even if it stinks, the ride there and back is wonderful.

That's a story for another day!

If you thought Burke's Garden gravel road was something, you should have been with us today!

Carlost, it took us 7-1/2 hours to go 75 miles (Meadows of Dan to Danville) yesterday, for an overall average of about 10 m.p.h.

I think we've taken the concept of running on "Mexican time" to a whole new level. ; )

Nance, there was no glacier crossing at the top this time, but we took the group the back way into Burke's Garden on Saturday.

It's a lot prettier ride in July than in January.

Fabulous weekend, y'all. : ): )

I thought that gravel road was very tame compared to what Charlieboy and I were riding. Heather wasn't so sure all the time though.

Would have liked to have been on Mexican time with you guys, but I was sipping Mexican beers poolside instead. It didn't suck...

Heather wasn't so sure all the time though.

I wasn't sure any of the time! My sense of adventure is not to the level that M2nc's is. I guess that's obvious.

My suggestion is that next time we can enter Burke's Garden through the paved road, you guys can drop us girls at the store. We shall eat, drink "off premises" and chill while you ride the gravel road. Just remember to come back and get us!

Yes, I took it the first time in the summer.

It was quite different when I took you all back there in the winter.
