1. I used blue (medium strength) threadlocker on the oil drain plugs, will this be enough?

2. The manual says to only turn the oil filter about 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after the gasket touches. This seemed way too loose so I made it pretty tight - hand tight, is this ok?

1 - I don't use any thread locker on the drain plugs, and tighten them to they are good and snug. Disregard the torque spec posted in the manual

2 - Same with the filter, good and snug.

Hand tight is fine on the filter, the drain plugs are not your typical "bolt", don't go too tight on those.

NO! Too tight...

I torque the drain plugs to no more than 12ft/lbs.
If you're really paranoid, drill the plugs and use safety wire.

I twist the oil filter by hand until I feel metal contact.

Don't use threadlocker in the future.
The SM says LocTite, but they are referring to a LocTite product that is basically a thread sealant (like the white paste you sometimes use for plumbing pipe threads, because this is a tapered thread).

that and the o-ring is what they chose to use instead of the more common straight thread with a crush/sealing washer.

More folks than I can count have stripped their engine or trans oil plugs using the ridiculously high torques specs in the SM.
Topic has been well covered here, and you might look in the New Uly Owners thread on the Big bad and Dirty forum for other general things to know, since it is still an XB.

I generally go higher than teeps 12 ft-lbs, but not much. Maybe 15 ft-lbs, especially with the thread sealant (which will act as a lube, and make the torque spec stretch the bolt more than the same number on dry threads).

Overtightening the oil filter can lead to frustration at next change, as it tightens up over time and will be harder to remove. No need to go past 3/4 turn from when the gasket first makes contact.
I have never heard of one coming loose yet.

I have heard of folks having to chisel them off when they were overtightened.

Wow, thanks again for the replies. It looks like I'll be letting a shop do the next oil change just in case something gets stripped out or the filter is too tight for me to remove. After that I'll follow these tips.

If you stripped out your oil plug, it most likely would have already been felt as you tightened it.
As for oil filter, just try it yourself first with a decent oil filter wrench (IIRC a typical Honda sized one fits the Buell/HD filter).
No need to let someone else ruin your bike and then tell you it was already that way when you brought it in.
