Great job

My XB9S has a hole in the frame...

Could it be done for under $5K?

a setup like that could be done for probably around $3k at the most, plus some tuning. on a budget if you wanted to do most of it yourself it could be done for under $500. i've seen turbo setups done on cars for less than $300 done by shade tree mechanics.

Wow! I really like it! What made you move the turbo to the bottom of the bike from the original left side orientation? Your hard work and high level of execution is amazing!!!

New IHI turbos sized relatively right for the 1203's can be had for ~250-300. Some piping work, a cheapy BOV, you could have it up running and tuned for under 1k me thinks.

I'm not sure of the quality of the small IHI turbos, but I know Subaru specs IHI's in some of their cars.

If they do become available i would definitely be interested to see how you would plumb in a newer/non snorkel frame...

To make 150rwhp (almost doubling stock) he likely added bigger injectors, fuel pressure regulator, water injection and possibly bigger fuel pump. Lots-o-tuning. Search his name. He has been working on this, fine-tuning, for years. Not a cheap set-up that you could DIY for $1k. If you did it right the first time, no changes, I would be VERY surprised if you could duplicate for less than $2k DIY.

Major Props. Now sell us a darn kit like you set out to do. All the power of an 1125 without the pods: )

Eengler, I'm not saying you could get his same results for under 1k, but you could be up and probably running 4-5lbs of boost on a otherwise stock bike. Even that should net you a good kick in the butt dyno increase in power.

Personally I would be looking to add an intercooler, probably from an older Mitsubishi eclipse, the factory intercoolers on those are TINY compared to a front mount, probably about right for our bikes though. Clean up the exhaust/wastegate pipes to make em pretty. Possibly add a ceramic coated hot side to the exhaust.

i think the older mitsu intercooler would be much too big for a bike. you could probably get away with modifying one out of a supercharged millenia or something like that. but, for what cores go for, i'd sooner just buy one and put my own endtanks on it.

i'm still curious about the oil feed/return on this setup.

I think he's using water injection rather than an intercooler.
At least that's what I'm guessing the aluminum tank, in the rear of the stock airbox area, is for.
It's a really cool way to prevent detonation without hanging an intercooler off the bike.
With a little work you could easily put a hole in the airbox cover and install a flush-mounted filler cap to the water tank for easy fill-ups.

That set-up is definitely not a cheap job.

i think i'd choose methanol injection over a water injection setup, perhaps that is what he is running in place of the intercooler.

still waiting on an answer about the oil feed/return.

i dont know where eric wandered off to... lol, but yes its water injection. last i knew he could get a good few tanks of fuel through the bike before needing to add more

and yes lots of small parts needed to be changed. the stock fuel setup was not able to flow enough to keep up. there are plenty of details i know about and even more im sure i have missed during this long project.

i'll let him go into any detail he chooses to share. (plus something could have easily changed since i knew)

I take it the water injection is turned on by a boost activated switch?

Either way I would build in an intercooler, being an aircooled engine I would want to take all the heat out of the intake charge as possible. Hell keep the water/meth injection as well.

On the subject of oiling, seeing as our engines are air/oil cooled, if he's running the thing off of the engines oil, did he install a larger oil cooler? Any way to bump up oil capacity and cooling could be useful here.

So much thought into a proper turbo setup, this is inspiring me to start on my own. I've been reading on the application of turbos to non turbo engines for the last couple of years, I think the Buell may become the test mule, aka victim of my ideas....

I would probably take as long if not longer to finish though, I want to ride in the summer, I would only work on it in the winter months.

Enough useless banter,

Lets see here, I'll try to answer all questions and forgive me if I miss one: )

I am running an Aquamist 1S water injection kit on my XB. The water injection works best for this application because it is more efficient at reducing charge air temps than any intercooler that would fit on the bike and with the high stock cr, the water injection slows the combustion process and reduces detonation. Methanol injection works well but not as good as water. If you live in below freezing temps, some sort of antifreeze is needed but water is the most efficient.

The turbo is oiled from the stock oil pump and the oil is returned to the cam cavity by a small electric oil scavenge pump. I have monitored oil temps and the stock oil cooler has done just fine at keeping temps under control.

I have spent LOTS of money, time, and research to build this setup. You could fabricate a functioning turbo kit for an XB with cheap used parts and make low boost for a small HP increase. As soon as you try to package anything so that it looks good, functions good, or is easy to maintain, you will spend much more money. There is no such thing as cheap HP but I wish there was!!!!

The fuel system has gone through several modified versions and has always maintained use of the stock fuel pump. Currently, the only changes to the fuel system are larger injectors and higher fuel pressure.

Keep the questions coming and I will be happy to answer!!

What are the charge air temps you are seeing at 11psi with the water injection turned on?

Any extended runs at full boost?

i'm curious what you are using for management?

i agree, a lot of money, research and effort goes into something like this.

cheap, reliable, fast... you can pick any 2 but not all 3. i'd say you've gone with the last 2!

What's it like to ride it?

The bike looks great and the Dyno charts are obviously impressive... but how did the ride change?

I've never ridden a 150 Hp bike before, truth is, my Scg is my first bike. Those numbers at 5 grand make me wonder... what's it like to hang off the side of that thing in a corner?

All,

Please avoid posting on the forum asking Eric about availability of his turbo in a kit form. He's not a sponsor and it's not fair to our sponsors (the folks who fund the ongoing operation and maintenance of BadWeB) to do so. Thanks for understanding. If he does come out with a kit for sale and does sponsor, you'll all be among the first to know.

Thanks,

Blake
