Hi everyone,I just thought i'd share the experience I had today on my 9s.Basically the bike is 7mths old and has covered 5,520mls. Upon arriving at a Buell dealership open-day in Southampton UK this morning,I glanced down at my Xb's drivebelt and noticed that it had a series of a dozen or so small tears appox 3-5mm long (from the middle outwards,on the outside face). I asked the resident Buell technicain at the dealership to examine the belt,and he was suprised to see the extend of the ripping,and he was also shocked that 15minutes prior to pulling up I was doing speeds inexcess of 70mph on the motorway,and the belt did'nt snap on me. Lucky for me the parts manager had an "upgraded" XB9 belt in stock & the service department took my bike in the workshop and fitted it immediately for me. | ||

Haven't had that happen yet and I have over 24k on mine, you may have picked up a rock? Do you have your belt guards still in place? | ||

Hi XB9rski I every much doubt it was a stone as the tears were in a series (12 or so) on the outside face of the belt,and yes I do still have both belt guards still in place to safe-guard against such an event happening. | ||

Umm, if all they replaced was the belt with the new upgraded one then the job wasnt done properly. You also need to replace the pulleys with the new ones that accept the deeper & wider teeth. Was everything replaced or just the belt? | ||

As far as I know just the Belt was replaced Dyna,I did'nt notice some initial juddering on the 130 trip home,but that might of been paranoia on my behalf.The belt seems to fit nicely on the pulleys as I checked the belt once I got home. Either way I'll ring the Dealership or BUK (Buell UK) 1st thing Monday morning and ask. edited by StooBr2 on February 21, 2004 | ||

It sounds like they gave you the right belt. You might want to check the belt idler pulley for a bad bearing. If it's bad, the same thing could happen to your new belt. Did the service tech check it? It may need to be replaced. | ||

I know the guys well at the Dealership I visited,I requlary go there once a month or so for a social call more than parts/accessorys,the salesman I know has become a very good friend & we chat daily,the tecnician has a M2 based drag-bike,& his currently working on a tricked-up (engine wise) XB9. So I trust his experience,more than my knowledge. Does the idler-pulley realy need replacing at such a low milage (5,520mls) ? or is it like conventional chain-driven bikes you need to replace the sprockets when you do the chain ? At the end of the day I have a letter stating when the belt was replaced,I still have the balance of the 2yr warranty left,so if it does snap again,or need further attention I will take it back and show them the letter stating just the belt was replaced! Dyna, Thanks for the warning, but you are incorrect. There is a new better 11mm belt out now for the '03's. Not as good as the new 14, but definitely better, so he does not need the new pulleys and belt covers.Stoober2 should be fine. | ||

Thanks for the info hell.... thanks for the upgrade! Thats a lot of work and trouble for a legacy part that was "not that bad". More broke then we would like to see, but if you left your guards on and left the enduro stuff to the KLR's, belt life was acceptable. It would have been very easy for the factory to say "its good enough now, and if they want to upgrade they can just get the '04 kit". Thanks for an economical "middle of the road" alternative! | ||

Anony, how would one identify the improved 11mm belt? Change of part number or just batch number? | ||

Stoobr2--I wasn't suggesting replacement of the idler pulley for no good reason. Recommended replacement is at the 15,000 mi. mark, same as belt. I believe that a Defective or Damaged idler pulley bearing(s) may cause the type of Belt damage you describe (I have no evidence of this, just one thing I would want to check). | ||

ummm, I think there was a part number change on the 11mm belts sometime last year. Spring '03 comes to mind, but I'm not sure. What's the part number on this "new and improved" belt. It should be silk screened on the belt... I know I've snapped two. I scored a set of new ones (2) for just over $100 on ebay a month or so ago. My belt guards have always been on, and I've been meticulous about NOT twisting/manipulating the belts during tire changes. | ||

My last word on the subject.....Easyflier the belt I has fitted on Saturday had a different part number (I think) it had an "s" added to the end. If I remember,i'll rotate my belt this morning and see if I can spot any numbers on it & post them here ? | ||

I've just been out and checked the belt on my 9 having had it replaced (under warranty) on Saturday because it had a series of rips on the outside face,having only covered 5,520mls.The numbers located on the belt are as follows: BUELL G0500.02A8R USA 261R22 | ||

I'll have to check mine and see what part I replaced mine with. I wanted to upgrade to the '04 belt and pulleys eventually but since I went 10,800 on the original it's not pressing, especially if the new one holds up even better. | ||
