Actually, I'm not freaked out about this. It does not run across the belt...but I'll be taking this in to get my mech's opinion as soon as I can.

In the meantime I thought I'd post it up and get some opinions from the group at large. Original '03 belt with less than 3,000 miles on it. If anything, I'd suspect it's damage related to rear wheel removal & changing. Certainly not wear related.

My belt looks pretty similar to that too. 04 XB12R. I was starting to wonder about that myself. I don't think mine is as bad, so I'm just going to ride it till it snaps and then have the dealer replace it under warranty.

the question is not if, but WHEN? the belt WILL break, and if you are not in your own driveway, then you will be pushing the bike. sorry.

Don't sweat it.

I had those cracks ALL OVER my belt for 4000 kms. During that time I had 3 stones pressed through and finally one stone on the side which made it crack from the side. 500 kays later, it snapped.

That's normal. The belt guards rub on the belt and rear pulley and cause that. Ten bucks says you have a wear spot on the lower belt guard to match...

Lot's of original '03 belts failed at around 2500 miles. If you are near that mileage with the original belt and the original tires, a good idea might be to change both at the same time, the work involved is pretty similar. I would recommend the latest version of the '03 belt, and the Michelin Pilot Power tires which just got a top review in Road Racing Magazine. I found mine lasted over 4200 miles, and greatly improved the handling the bike. The revised belt also has 4K miles, and seems to be like new. Take it from me, losing a belt at speed lends itself to a memorable experience that one is not likely to want to repeat real soon. Your belt looks to me like it is getting ready to do something you might not enjoy very much.

I have close to 5k on my 03 and the belt still looks good, I know of some that the 03 belt broke right at 15k. From what I have heard the only belts that broke on the 03 where mishandled belts, if you handle it correctly you should not have to worry about it.

'03 XB9R with factory installed belt. 6500 miles on it. No abnormal wear spots. (checked it 2 days ago) But then again I'm running the full belt guard setup.

I purchased the bike used with 1800 miles mid February 05.

Replaced the stock rear tire March 4th with 2,364 miles. I now have 4610 miles on my 03 XB9R and the Belt looks great.

With the rear tire change, I assisted the mechanic to insure that the belt was handled correctly while the tire was changed

Hearing all these posts about 2500-3000 miles on the first belt makes me wonder since that is about the mileage one can get out of the stock D207 rear tire.

I have an earlier '03 XB9R which was at the dealer for a long time, was a demo bike, and now has 15,000 miles on it with practically no signs of wear and tear. I fully intend to see if I can get a few more thousand out of 'er before replacing at the next tire change. I figure the more miles I get the better.

Unfortunately I already got another '03 belt for replacement but after that one if I have close to 35000-40000 miles on it I figure the pulleys may need replacing...that is the time to upgrade if needed.

My original 03 09 belt lasted me 21,000 miles. Got the upgraded replacement, got 9,000 on the new one now.

Noticed that when new had a few places on the edge that were not covered in rubber, wasn't frayed either. Always have changed the tires myself and had the complete belt guard installed.

Mine just peeled off with no ill effects, up the hill from work - no pushing.
