So to me, the "big news" in that announcement is that they are open to selling it, or open to just operating it. Which is encouraging, even if it is a bluff to make it easier to sell.

That could explain some of the "not really prepared" parts of re-entering the market as well. They are announcing a restart of operations, and putting people in place to start selling what they can, but starting slowly. If it takes a year to get back into all the markets, it takes a year, and they just ramp up slowly.

Given where the economy is at, taking a "bye" year or two may not be that bad a decision, provided you keep some engineering going behind the scenes so you can re-emerge at the front of the pack when the economy heats back up.

Oh yea, another question was answered. The name of the new company is "EBR Motorcycles, LLC".

^ Hey, maybe Erik gave LAP his version of the "Morgan Freeman parole speech" before they agreed to buy EBR.

Oh, and the other encouraging statement was "aggressive MSRP".

Modern bikes are amazing, but frankly, ridiculous. Traction control, 180 HP from 1000cc, ABS, electronic suspension, etc. More stuff than can ever be appreciated, and more than any of us can really use, and the result is a highly complicated and expensive machine.

You wonder if there is a place for simple but elegant.

Picture in the car world if somebody were to produce a more modern Porsche 914. Sell it for $12,000, still an air cooled motor but with modern materials, airbags, modern rubber and brakes, but designs that remain stable for a decade at a time. Simple but beautiful and elegant.

Its hard to pull off for a car, but for a motorcycle, could it be done?

The elemental motorcycle. Not one that ignores technology, just one that demands a high return on technological investment, and never looses site of the goal of being a simple, durable, and affordable hot rod.

Kind of like a 2000 M2, a 2005 XB9SX, and a 2010 Ulysses. The three best bikes Buell ever made. Now make the new ones with the new motor (detuned and reliable).

And I wouldn't mind a turbo XB9SX either...

Blake wrote: "You've been to four dealerships and surveyed some salesmen?"

You lack basic math skills if your answer is "four" when you total these up: "four Harley dealers that carried Buells in Maryland, two in Virginia, one in Florida, and, if memory serves, at least one in California."

Blake wrote: Salesmen don't set policy or business model.

If you have Harley salesmen who know the product and its competition, embrace the Harley lifestyle, connect with Harley customers, and are raking in money for you, you keep them. You keep them even if they know almost nothing about EBR motorycles, the competition, or sport bike riders (who rarely show up in your dealership anyway). That's why salesmen who knew nothing about Buells were still there for so many of us to talk to.

Blake wrote: "You're just operating on very little information."

No, I'm operating on knowledge, history, and logic. Harley dealerships don't attract sport bike riders. They didn't attract them when Buells used Harley-based engines. They didn't attract them when Buell introduced the 1125R or 1125CR. They didn't attract them when Harley management was enthusiastic about Buell or when the management changed to one that was hostile to Buell. Trying to sell sport bikes at Harley dealership is like trying to sell Merlin titanium frame racing bicycles at a mobility scooter store.

Your whole argument seems to be based on wishing something were true. It's like you're living in some alternate universe where the Zune was a great success because Microsoft's management was enthusiastic about it.

Interesting thought- if all they are planning to do is build more 1190's, they wouldn't have much need of Dan Hurda's talents.

I believe the MSJ article has been updated since yesterday:

http://www.jsonline.com/business/erik-buell-racing -restarts-motorcycle-production-in-east-troy-b9967 9298z1-370674071.html

They at least raise the possibility they may try to do something for the existing owners in the way of warranty.

P.S. I don't suspect he will have the time to see this, so I'll just reiterate it the next time I see him - like at Homecoming in 90 days or so...

All the article really says is "the AX will be an adventure bike", like that was a huge revelation. The REALLY BAD Photoshop of what it might look like is BS.

"EBR has indeed mentioned it from the early days of their new website, but it looks like that name will still remain greyed out for a while. Pietruszewski confirmed that the 1190AX is in the company’s plans, but with no certainty as to when will it be delivered. “For sure not in 2015,” he told us."

Yeah, for sure not in 2015 lol

Interesting- they've updated the name of the company to "Erik Buell Racing Motorcycles, LLC" on LinkedIn, but as far as I see, Dan Hurda is the only employee that's updated their resume to match.

^ It's just odd that someone went to the trouble to update LinkedIn, yet the EBR website still shows info on 2014 models, the defunct WSB race teams, etc. and has no mention of the restart of production or the upcoming events.

New pricing info is supposed to be released next week so hopefully there will be a MAJOR website revision to go along with that.

Why doesn't someone with web development skills contact them and offer to update the site?

I am sure they are quite busy and doing what they can with the resources available.

That might be the problem, not the solution...

Don't take this the wrong way, and God bless enthusiasts. But for some things, you might be better off with a professional who could care less about motorcycles, but who knows how to schedule and run projects.

I could remove the links to outdated pages and update some of the text/pictures.
Not sure I could handle the backlash if I made a typo.
