The piston may be seized or sticking in the caliper bore. Flushing and then bleeding would be the first thing I'd try. Notice the condition of the fluid that you get out. If it is cloudy, or otherwise contaminated, it would indicate moisture in the fluid, and possible corrosion.

Is there enough freeplay in the brake pedal?
Have you adjusted it recently? Or moved it or bent it?

Fyi: the more you "pump" an old and probably corroded master cylinder the more likely you will ruin it. The seals will get ripped up. You'll need to get a rebuild kit or another master cylinder. Both can be found cheap.

I regrettably do not have the part numbers. They're probably the same as an XB master cylinder. Used from ebay would would. Gravity bleeding is a lot better than pump bleeding. The cylinder corrodes in the section the piston rarely sees. So when you start bottoming out the piston, the corrosion rips the seals up.

It is rare to see a master cylinder suffer corrosion damage. Usually its just the caliper bore (slave cylinder) that needs attention.

Not true. But there is no slave cylinder anyway. Just a master and caliper.

What is "Not true"? Are you saying that a caliper cylinder is not a slave cylinder?

While mostly alike in function, a slave cylinder and caliper are different and the names are not interchangeable.

It is not rare for a master cylinder to suffer corrosion damage. They do and depending on age and care, the risk should be noted.

You can be right if you want to be, but if you start calling calipers and wheel cylinders "slave cylinders" people are a) not going to know what you are referring to or b) will think you don't know what you are talking about.

Please note that I used the words "caliper bore", followed by "slave cylinder" in parentheses. I am curious about what is unclear about that? I have been turning wrenches on cars and bikes for thirty years. In all that time, replacing and rebuilding dozens of "calipers", the grand total of master cylinders needing repair or replacement is exactly one (1). Based on that experience, I am standing by my statement that master cylinder problems are rare.

Dude, drop it!
We both know what we're talking about so what is the point of beating this to death when we essentially agree. We just disagree on the semantics of explanation. I've been working on cars and bikes for over 35 years.
If you know so much then continue helping those who don't with their problems. Continued arguing with me defeats the purpose of this forum.
