**Dealer Communication September 18, 2000***

Buell Motorcycle Company has learned that certain 2000 Buell motorcycles were built with a rear wheel sprocket that could break.
This condition could cause the rider to lose power, lose control, or be struck by debris. Any of these occurrences could cause serious injury or death.

This campaign involves all 2000 model year Blast P3 motorcycles produced between 3/3/1999 and 7/6/2000.

We have voluntarily declared this a "defect related to motor vehicle safety" (Campaign 0822) to allow us to formally recall all potentially affected motorcycles. A bulletin containing details including parts availability will be mailed to you as soon as possible.

In the interest of the safety of our mutual customers, and as required by law, you may sell but NOT DELIVER any affected motorcycles to your customers until the recall service has been performed.

In accordance with Federal regulations administered by NHTSA all registered owners of affected vehicles will be notified by Buell
Distribution Corporation of this condition and requested to bring the vehicle in for the recall service.

Please note that this safety recall does not impact 2001 year model Blast.

Just thought this should be here, although it applies to all Buells - in 2002 Buell went from the paper style rocker cover gasket to the cosmetic style/metalic - thus upgrading the ability of the gasket to not leak - lol

EZ-

FWIW, I believe the rocker gasket change was made around September (don't quote me on the date) of 2002 which meant quite a number of 02 Blasts were made with paper gaskets - ours included.

Had my paper replaced with metal around 7K. I'm past 16K, and I have to pull the head off to get the exhaust studs removed. Do I need a new metal gasket if it looks OK?

Replace the gasket.
Unless unavoidable, do not re-use any gaskets. Some gaskets, in a pinch, can be re-used, head gaskets almost never!

I might be tempted to reuse a metal primary gasket, but pulling the rocker boxes is a PITA. I would just get a new set and have peace.

2004 Recall notice - news message:

A rollover vent valve on the 2004 Buell Blast motorcycle has to be
replaced because investigators have discovered it might not be able
to do the job for which it was designed.

The valve is designed to allow air to replace fuel in the tank
during operation. TRANSPORT CANADA says it can quit working,
leaving the bike without a gasoline supply, thus starving the engine
of fuel."

From Canadian Press - not yet officially a Buell Blast Recall - Stay tuned!

Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to notify dealers that some
Buell motorcycles were produced with incorrectly manufactured
engine sprocket nuts. The incorrectly manufactured nut
has an interference fit which may result in a false torque reading.
This can cause the nut to lose clamp load on the engine
sprocket, allowing the sprocket and alternator rotor to loosen
and create noise.
Motorcycles Affected
Late production 2000 and early production 2001 (5/15/2000-
6/15/2000) Buell X1, M2, S3 and P3.
Required Dealer Action
In the event that a customer complains of an unusual noise,
start the motorcycle and inspect for a noise in the primary
housing. If any unusual noise is heard in the primary housing,
shut the motorcycle off, remove the primary cover and
inspect the engine sprocket nut.
NOTE
See the applicable service manual for primary cover removal
and replacement procedure.
See Figure 1. A good, serviceable sprocket nut is shown on
the left side of the figure. An incorrectly manufactured nut is
shown on the right, identified by two arrow-shaped indentations
on the face of the nut.
NOTE
If an affected motorcycle has been brought in for repair and
the primary cover is removed, inspect the engine sprocket
nut. Replace if it is determined to be an incorrectly manufactured
nut.
Credit Procedure
After servicing each vehicle, file a warranty claim referencing
Service Bulletin B-043 in the “Description of Repair” or “Comments”
section of the claim. Fill in the rest of the claim as follows:
*
Use BMC if vehicle is still within factory warranty period; use
BGW if vehicle is beyond factory warranty period. Vehicles
beyond factory warranty period do not require prior authorization.
If using h-dnet.com, put “Per Bulletin B-043 in the authorization
box.

had mine apart, i think mine was made 7/99 (or there abouts), and it has the correct nut. Yes, I CAN read, and i know this is a late 2000 and up problem, but it never hurts to check : )

Just to let you all know, it seems that Buell has improved the oil blow by situation with the '05 Blast. Mine puked out just under a half quart when I rode it hard right after passing the 500 mile break in point but it doesn't seem to have lost a drop since.

So how has the situation improved? My '03 has is only down a few ounces in the last 1100 miles.

Did they actually re-engineer something; or are you just hoping you won't have to check the oil on your `05 between changes?

At the risk of sounding GREEN,is there an after
market carb that eliminates the autoenhance
and replaces with a manual choke.Just fishin...

the stock CV carb is the same one that HD uses on its big twins, but without the accelerator pump. The HD version uses a choke assembly, and does not have the throttle position sensor. while the Blast is modified for the automatic enrichener. changing between the two carbs is not physicly difficult, as long as you plan ahead (unlike me) and have a choke cable available, abd an aftermarket ignition to get around the HD version not having the throttle position sensor...

these are not insurmountable, but will take some inginuety to implement. Here is a hint: the Blast carb has the capability to supply enough fuel for a big twin...so like i was told last week, changing carbs to get rid of an enrichener or to add an accelerator pump is hard to economicly justify. But it is fun to try!

I added a Dial a jet - definate plus in carb response, but on the modified bike jetting took several dyno tries - to get leaner on the main - but its worked out great. HSR Mikuni 42 flat side is a performance choice used, I'm still thinking a 40mm Quick Silver Double pumper - as run in KTM's and other singles might be a good option as well.

Nope. Still checking the oil at every fuel stop. Its still a machine and still needs to be checked just like my car and the airplanes I work on.

Bhawk: Adding to what Rockbiter said, changing carbs is more trouble than its worth. Unless you've made serious engine modifications, going to a different style (non-CV)carb wont gain you really anything (but trouble). The stock carb doesnt have any real problems either that would warrant the trouble and expense.

My engine sputters and hesitates a little bit if I crank the throttle quickly off of idle. Is this normal due to the tps setup or do I have a potential problem developing? The bike is stock and is currently in for its 1,000 mile service. It only has 875 miles on it but I can't ride at the moment due to a little injury suffered at work.

The Blast carb isnt built to go closed throttle to WFO in a snap of the wrist. It will tend to hesitate.
BUT its more than likely doing this because:
A. the bike isnt broken in yet.
B. the gas is old and stale (you said you dont ride it much).
C. Its not warmed up yet.
Do feel free to mention any problems to the dealer while its under warranty.

Thanks Gearheader. I have a feeling its just me expecting too much. The bike runs fine otherwise. Well, when I remember to turn the fuel valve on. ; )

Sounds like my "while going down a bumpy hill the engine shut off for no apparent reason".
Except that I have a 2001!
