i am thinking of getting myself a Buell Blast. i went to my local HD dealer and sat on a new '07 Blast and loved the way it felt. i was wondering if this bike will be able to cruise along at 65-70mph or a little faster (70-75) without the engine screaming. i am not looking to do any long distance touring but i will need to cruise on the highway and just want to be able to keep up with the flow of traffic without feeling like the motor is ready to come flying apart. are there any known problems i should look for if i deside to buy used instead of new?

thanks very from a future Buell owner
George

My daughter's Blast will carry my fat ass(225 Lbs) 80 - 85 MPH all day long. You shouldn't have any problems. If you are a relatively new rider, you're going to really love the Blast.

well i'm not a new rider but all my experience is with dirt bikes. i currently am riding a 2006 dual sport Suzuki DR200. i have the bike set up for woods riding (DOT knobbies, dropped the counter shaft sprocket 2 teeth) and it really lacks on the street. when i sat on the blast it felt like it fit me perfectly. before i buy one i just want to make sure it will do what i want and from the sounds of all the replies i think there is a Blast in my future.

My G/F just got one.

I bought her a new 2007, so we would know it's history.

She loves it, I have fun riding it on occasion as well.
Highly recommended.

Both my kids have Blasts, they are both over 200 lbs, and 6' tall, they ride the hell out of them, I followed my youngest home the other day and he was 80-85 mph for 110 miles non-stop.
Top speed is 96 MPH.
They are a riot to ride.

Nytrashman - The Blast will cruise along in th e 80s with all 220 lbs of me on it. I've owned a Blast for 2 years, and I think you'll love it.

Buying a used one can be a good move, as you can find them on ebay for around $2,000. You asked for things to look for:

1 - There was a rear sprocket recall on the 00 models. If you get an 00 have an HD dealer run the VIN to make sure thats been done. If it hasn't, they will do it for free.

2 - Models before 03 uses a paper rocker box gasket, which will eventually leak. You will want to replace it with the metal rocker box gasket used on later models.

3 - There is a rubber manifold connector which couples the carb to the intake. It tends to get hairline cracks which produce strange symptoms. It's a cheap part. Keep one under your seat for emergencies. It's really the only unreliable part on the bike. If anything strange is going on, suspect this connector.

I hope you end up with one of these bikes. I think you'll love it. It is viewed as a beginner bike, but I'm not a beginner any more and I still love riding it.

Nytrashman The blast is a perfect bike for your size and a good one to. Probably the most reliable bike Buell makes. I use to beat the shit out of my ex-wifes when i rode it. Took it to a battle trax and wore the bottom of the pegs to the rubber grips. Now that i think of it i should have beat the piss out of it even hard than i did.

My G/F bought a "riders edge" Blast from a H-D/Buell dealer in our area. It had 160 miles on it with two small scratches and full factory warranty for $2500. I have run it to 80 mph with more to go, you will love one ! We added a Vance & Hines exhaust, K&N filter and rejetted. It sounds like Ricky Carmicheal and James "Bubba" Stewart are under you racing.

Good Luck

George,
Go back to the dealership and ask for a test ride. It's all it'll take. You'll love it.

Welcome to the board!

My son is 6'6", 245 lbs.
He hasn't ridden bikes.
Going to get his license after riding course.
I was thinking of recommending the Blast as a first bike for him.
Do you think he may be too big for this bike?
If so - any recommendations.

old_man - Yea, he is too big for it, but so am I and I still like it. If he takes the Riders Edge course, he will spend 2 days on Blast's and should know what he thinks of them by the end of the class.

I am 290lbs and my blast took me to work almost everyday @ 80+ mph, V&H pipe, pro breather, re-jet. It was a little to short for me im 5'10". She wasn't the fastest thing ever, but she was fun and good on gas!

Mine will do 80 mph on long rides, no problem. I've gotten it up to about 95 mph on a long straight away.
It gets at least 70 mpg.
