Am I having miscarburetion? Just recently, I started hearing popping in my exhaust as I decelerate in gear or after an engine rev. My mileage has dropped as well. Any ideas on where to look first? I'm past 21K miles...

Check/change your intake boot, Check to make sure your header is secured to proper torque specs to the head, if it still does it - check your upper carb diaphram for rips, holes, wear, and your jets for a partial clogging.

Isn't a little bit of pop inherent to the single cylinder engine? I have a little pop every once and awhile. But engine is new.

Naw it can be tuned out, but is often left alone - since the air screw is covered (you'd have to remove the solder plug) and you would have to go to a 45 primary jet, however, if you start getting a lot of popping out of the blue - I would suspect an intake leak - loose/torn boot.

Boot's good, but it's close to not being good. I see a crack inside that hasn't made it to the outside. It acts like it is running rich. I opened the air box and it had a strong fuel smell. I opened the throttle while I had it off, and got a little gasoline sputter coming out of the carburetor. Is this normal during quick throttle openings?

I'll go ahead and pull the whole thing apart this weekend. No time this week...

I suspect a problem with my auto-enrichener. My blast does not like to idle, but on occasion, it does. I bought it with the V&H exhaust and it was re jetted at the dealer. I've tightened the intake boot and appears to be in good condition. Is this a problem anyone else has found? Has anyone put a carb with a manual choke?

I'd check for proper torque on the metal intake to the head and get a new boot and then check, then make sure your tank vent isn't clogged, kinked, or torn (testable by just poping the gas tank lid - if problem disapears - problem found) - then if it is still causing trouble then I would suspect the auto - enrichner - after making sure plug wire and plug are firmly on at both ends - lol - Yeah - my red bike had an enrichner problem - a wierd surging very high idle, but its a 2000 and has had practically every problem in the book - lol

Did it ever idle? Before or after it went to the dealer.
I would do a test on the intake boot.(Spray carb & choke cleaner or WD40 around the boot and see if the idle changes).
Yes people have installed a carb with a choke but we usually find out about it because they are having problems! Its much easier to fix the auto enrichener than to do a changeover.
Any other running problems? How many miles on it? Does it just idle bad after sitting for several months?

It was the exhaust! The stud somebody drilled for me came out because of the thread damage. 1 hour and 1 helicoil later, and it's all better. I also changed the boot, which made a difference too, but not as much as the exhaust leaking.

Greetings and salutations! I am a NEW Blast owner (2004 leftover). So far, I absolutely love the bike. However, since it was delivered a couple of weeks ago, the bike seems to have an idling/acceleration problem and I was wondering if this was a "break-in" issue (the bike has only 180 miles on it so far). At initial start-up, it idles fine for about a minute and then immediately stalls. Also, when I am riding and accelerating it seems to be "choking" and having issues. Once the bike heats up (about twenty minutes of riding), it does not have the idling issue but maintains the acceleration issue throughout all of my rides to date. Does anyone have any ideas? I should also note that I am mechanically a novice. I also apologize for the REALLY long post! Moreover, I really appreciate the existence of the forum as it influenced my decision to purchase a Blast. Thanks. JDS

Try tightening the clamps on your intake boot - if that doesn't resolve it - you then may have a bad Auto -enrichner - that assumes everything else is good - lol

Josh,

It sounds like the bike has a dirty carb. since the bike is a leftover 2004, it has probably been sitting at the dealer for some time. Have the dealer throughly clean the carb.

EZ & James, thanks for the thoughts. I tightened up the clamps on the intake boot (tightened is a misnomer, they were pretty tight to begin with). However, I noticed that the air filter had some spotty oil stains and there was about a teaspoon of loose oil in the airbox. Moreover, there appears to be a line of oil from the edges of the box to the back of the bike. After "tightening" the clamps, I took it out for about thirty miles. However, I now notice what sound like little "pops" from the right side of the bike (possible backfires from the carb?). The bike is also starting to give me a really tough time starting off (stalled twice). I would add that I have been riding for over ten (10) years and was not stalling due to inexperience. I think my new baby must return to the hospital for some TLC. I will pass on the comments vis-a-vis the auto-enrichner and the carb to the dealer. Is there anything else that I should (or the dealer should) focus on given these symptoms? Thanks again for all the insight! JDS

The loose oil in the airbox sounds like the nozzle on the puke line is pointing away from the carb, which would be a good thing. However, since your bike was set up at the dealership, I doubt this is the case. There should be a line running across the throat of the carb inside the airbox, with a "t" in the middle. If the nozzle is pointed away from the carb, then that's where the oil came from, if it's pointing towards the carb, check the connection and the clamps on each side. Then turn it out towards the side of the airbox. Just remember to pop off the cover and clean it out whenever you've been doing a high amount of high-RPM riding, or once a week, whichever comes first. In time, you'll be able to do it blindfolded with one hand tied behind your back. Trust me on that one. lol...
As for the other, I'm going to have to side with EZ, sounds like faulty auto-enrichener (like it isn't cutting off at the right time, making it too rich, which would explain your backfires on acceleration.) Also, if it's running too rich, you may be starting to foul your plug, which could explain the stalling, etc. Not to say that James didn't make a good point, your carb could probably use a thorough cleaning as well. Actually, these things should have been taken care of by the dealer before you picked it up, IMHO, but they didn't call me and ask my advice. lol...

And if you take it to the dealer, and they clean the carb, don't let them put it back together without putting the larger main and primary jets in it!

I'd suggest you pull your spark plug out and see if it is really dark or white. Either shows a fuel/air mixture problem. Check your exhaust nuts! Make sure they're tight! Sounds silly, but that was my main problem recently.

Aside from that, I'd have to go with the auto-enricher being a possible culprit.

Don't worry about a carb kit, just go to dealer and buy the jets you need. It's much cheaper.

This is also the best time to upgrade the phillips head screws holding the float bowl and cable bracket screws to allen head screws. They can be found at any hardware store.

For real, don't buy a carb kit! I spent $10 to rejet rather than $75!! Just go to the harley dealer and tell them what size jets you need.

You should be able to get a gaket set from any HD dealer. It's highly unlikely that you broke a carb gaket with a backfire. Most of the gaskets in the carb are rubber and re-usable. You could have possibly hurt the carb boot though.

Believe it or not, mot HD dealer stock carb parts and jets, because they are always re-jetting the carbed bikes after putting on different intakes and exhausts on bikes.

The dealer will definitely have the jets you need, as you won't be asking for a Buell-specific item. My jets are Sportster jets. I can't imagine any HD shop or dealership that wouldn't have a bin full of those in different sizes... And, to second James, you shouldn't need gaskets, but CHECK THE CARB BOOT! (then replace it anyway, since you've already got it off. lol...)

PS: Dont forget to tell the salesman they are the same as Sportster jets (they probably wont know that). But they will know what other HD's use the same jets as a Sportster.
