Notice the brake lever guard on #3. These need to be made mandatory by all race orgs in my opinion.

I agree, although I had a close look at that particular guard in some other photos and it doesn't seem as effective as the Rizoma versions used in the Triumph Street Triple series. The one pictured above is basically just a piece of metal protecting the front of the lever but open at the side (where an opponent is most likely to snag your lever!). It needs to enclose the brake lever completely in my opinion (a bit like a handguard on a dirt bike).

From what I've read, one of the concerns with the enclosed type that cover the end of the bar is they could get bent on an impact and apply the lever themselves. There were also concerns raised about them causing the throttle to stick, but that seems minor in comparison. I don't see what's wrong with a fully encosed bark-buster type setup as used in off-road applications.

One thing to consider is the rider's hand becoming trapped between the grip, the brake lever and the brake guard in a crash situation.

They could engineer a weak spot in the guard so that it would break off on impact, thereby greatly reducing the possibility that a rider's hand could become pinched between the bar and the lever.

I have a barkbuster I am putting on my race bike this year. I will be machining a break off into it so in the event of a crash i can get out of hte way.

I don't think you should machine a break off into the protector, as that could be more dangerous than not having it on at all! The last thing you want in the event of an accident is sharp pieces of broken metal flailing about.

A Barkbuster style protector shouldn't trap your hand, and in fact would offer some protection against getting your hand caught under the bar (ask Cal Crutchlow how this feels!)

Hi guys, we will be racing the rest of the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 season with the possibility of doing a couple of Daytona Sport Bike rounds on the Buell 1125R (thinking Road America and one other).

You can follow us at www.twitter.com/jamesgangracing or our Facebook fan page http://www.facebook.com/pages/James-GangHoban-Brot hers-Racing/186175074760801

I posted a bunch of great Buell racing images dating back to 2007 on our Facebook page and will continue to add and update the image library as the season progresses.

Thank you to all for your continued support and hope to see you at the track this summer!

Speaking of XR1200 racing, how much are people getting away with these days? Any 100 HP sportsters out there?

100 HP Sportsters?

With Stock bore/stroke? Not for more than a minute or two.

The whole thing about this class in racing is that you are NOT allowed any real engine modifications. It is more a superstock spec.

For performance engine work, XR1200 racing is the wrong place to look.

The ama spec bikes make about 86 HP on the dynojet used by ama. A stock XR makes 79hp on that dyno

When we ran the XR 2 years ago in ahrma bot f2 (stock displacement), we were making 109hp on a dynojet. The XR engine is a very close relative to the 2008-2010 big pin xb12 and responds accordingly.

Thanks Court. Ryan, Mid-Ohio would certainly be a consideration. Mike, yes we are going to Infineon (a new track for me). And we will be providing pit crew support for AMA Flat Track Grand National Champion Sammy Halbert there. Please come see us in the pits. Reg Kittrelle will be helping us out, so it should be a great time!

And please check out our Facebook page for some great photos and benchracing. Just uploaded a bunch in the "Crashed, Thrashed and Smashed" section. LOL.

(apologies for coming across as a smart-a$$ - AGAIN)

My XB is putting out 103 HP and has run a full season of racing at Willow without coming apart.

My main point was that the XR series restricts modifications to prevent it from becoming just another series where money rules.

Yea, that thing was pretty fun with the strong motor in it.....you are still pulling around 530lb though so it feels slower than a 100hp XB. Cool bike though!

I do still have the twin carb X1! That is next up on the repair/restoration workbench. was in full thrash mode all winter finishing up an ex Tom Kipp Yamaha OW01 superbike for the indy dealer show. I'm excited to run that one again.....fun, fun bike for sure.

It's just plain fun . . .

Frankly . . Paul James and The James Gang Race Team . . represent everything racing SHOULD be. They work hard, they have fun and they put on a darn entertaining show. What's not to like?

I could take or leave the XR1200 . . it just happens to be what they are running. I suspect it'd be just as fun to watch this group mix it up on anything from Vespas to F22 Raptors . . just good folk.

Thanks Court and everyone else for the kind words! I'm up for racing F-22 Raptors. I've always wanted to be a fighter pilot.

Racing Buell motorcycles is the next best thing. And the support and friendship between the Buell racers themselves and Buell owners around the world has always been something special. I don't think it could ever be matched by any other brand.

I just posted some photos of me and Jeff racing our tube frame bikes.

I remember the first time I raced a Buell (M2/S1 hybrid) in 1999. One of the corner workers came over during the lunch break. He said he had to check out the bike that was making "that righteous sound" down the back straight. He'd never seen one before. The next season, he stopped by my pits to show me his brand new Buell.
