My 2007 Uly will hit 50,000 miles on the odometer tomorrow. Thought that I would post here as it has been a very enjoyable bike for me. Bought it new, did not ride it one year while I tried an FJR. Other than oil changes and tires (about 8k on Pirelli's, over 12k on Mich. Pilot 2's) I have changed the rocker box gaskets, 1 set of plugs, 2 fans (the rocker box leak was the cause of 1 fan failure), 2 sets of rear wheel bearings (both after tire changes, important that the spacer is centered and proper torque procedures are used, one TPS reset and an oil cooler leak that was taken care of during the warranty period. The front brake surges due to pad build-up and I have not fixed the wind noise I get off the fairing. If it were not for those 2 items, the bike would be perfect. We just finished a 6 day 2,400 mile ride. Most miles was 566 in one day. Biggest day was 350 miles that included all of the roads in Yosemite park. My mpg is usually around 50 but got almost 60 riding from Grants Pass to Bend Oregon. I know that others have had some problems but all in all, I am a very happy Uly owner. | ||

Congratulations on the mileage achievement. Nice to know not all 2007's were afflicted with the crankshaft problems some of us had. For the front brake surging, I highly recommend the EBR rotor and mounting hardware. I changed to the older 6mm rotor version about 3 years ago with EBC pads and it still brakes as smooth as butter. I'd also like to do some more experimentation with the windshield. I've run a Laminar Lip for several years, and while it helps divert wind from your chest and head, it's still noisy. Might be time to try the Palmer or Madstad brackets. If you find something that works well, please post up. | ||

Ditto with being a very happy Uly owner. Closing in on eight years and more than 60,000 miles. The pulsating brake is not pad build up, but a warped rotor. I have the same problem with mine. One day I will get the thicker EBR rotor and do away with this problem. | ||

I have 50k on a stock rotor, always run EBC HH pads and I can assure you I abuse my brakes more than the average rider... | ||

Congrats on the mileage. I'm still riding my 07. The odometer turned 135k miles on Friday. Second engine of course (a low mileage 07 I put in from a salvaged STT). Have had a few electrical issues as of late due mainly to the effects of vibration on the wiring harness and fuse box. Seems to running ok now, however. Time will tell. | ||

Danair, First, experienced arcing on one of legs on the main 30 amp fuse. The only thing I can figure out is the fuse became loose in the socket, possibly due to vibration, and the arcing generated enough heat to melt the outer plastic on the fuse before it finally failed. Never carried a spare 30 amp fuse so had to call for a tow. I bought a fuse socket pigtail at the auto parts store and bypassed the fuse panel. I looked into replacing the fuse socket, but turned into more work than it was worth. The second issue was due to another failed fuse. This time the 15 amp ignition fuse failed, but did not blow in the traditional sense. It was a very subtle break in the filament that was impossible to see on the side of the road. When I got the bike home I was able to troubleshoot the failure using an ohm meter. The fuse looked fine but a closer look showed a hairline crack due to possible fatigue, not excessive current. After this failure, I replaced all the fuses as a precaution. | ||

Cycletlh, Congrats on 50k. My 07 still has low miles, 12k Dirt, congrats on 135k. I'm wondering how the first motor failed, or did it just get tired? | ||

Hey what a great post. Concise and detailed info from people who KNOW about how things work on bikes rather than just "stabbing-in-the-dark" and hoping for the best. The "fuse" thing from Dirt was a classic example. A case of pure logical fault diagnosis. Do it this way and you will not go far wrong. The wind noise depends on your height, helmet and, a bit, the seat height. The type/brand of helmet you use can make a big diff on a naked bike like the Uly as well as using ear plugs. The brake surge is either pad build up or a warped disc. Clean the rotor with water and emery cloth both sides and fit EBC HH pads. If it still does it it is a warped disc. Replace the disc and use the EBC pads. It will be fine after that and with the right helmet you WILL have your perfect bike. I do. (Message edited by uly_man on August 20, 2013) |
