I just signed the papers for an 09 XT that I bought from a HD dealer out of state. I have only seen pictures and it only has 1,007 miles on it. I've ridden a XP and XT and think they are fun bikes but before I ride mine is there anything I should look for besides checking the fluids, air PSI and etc?

It may be here the weekend. TB FLA.

I've been riding a BMWK1200LT for the last ten years with no complaints and have read about the Ulysses for years and wanted one just because. I'm looking for some fun rides ahead. Thanks for any advice! By the way the bike is red.

Have them set up the suspension for your weight. There is a chart in the owners manual for this. Takes only about 10 mins. and is well worth it for a nice handling bike. Congratulations and have fun!

Congrats , red is good.
+1 on the suspension set up. Be prepared for the vibration at idle - very foreign sensation for BMW riders.

+2 on the suspension set up. Doesn't take long and makes all the difference in the world.

Congrats on the new bike!

Dont freak out over the "rough" idle when you first take off on the bike. It goes away instantly once underway and it tends to grow on you, coming off a beemer it may seem a bit foreign, no pun intended..

Congrats. "Arrest Me Red", eh?

About the only regret I have with my Uly is that I didn't get it even sooner then February of last year. 'Course, then I probably wouldn't have the one I do, and it's about perfect.

Congrats and welcome. If my wife had her druthers, we'd be a Uly and K-LT family as well so your stable choices aren't lost on me.

After the suspension set up, the 'biggest' small nuance to riding a Buell I found was, being the first fool-injected bike I've ever owned, that I didn't need to blip the throttle. In fact, after reading here that the intake is so large that blipping the throttle actually makes the throttle response seem dull and oddly off tune, I stopped. Besides, no one can hear it rev and the vibrations just shake my horn loose behind the wind screen.

Now, I just leave the throttle alone and only twist it when I'm ready to go forward, rapidly. When I loan the bike to family that ride carb'd bikes, they tend to blip the throttle and I have to remind them it isn't necessary.

Blipping fouls plugs.

The most shocking thing for me on my 1st ride was the unusually tall 1st gear. Be prepared to slip the clutch to get it moving.
Also, let it warm up for at least a minute before you attempt to take off to lesson the chances of a hiccup.

+1 on letting the bike idle for a minute before touching the throttle.

Watch second gear on the loop onto the interstate! It will lift the tire in three gears if you really hammer it! (which is required once in a while)

Find the sweet spot on the tach. There is so much torque, that you can shift at any RPM, but finding the sweet spot makes this bike sing.

When carrying the wife, I short shift it for smoothness and it never complains. I get great mileage doing that as well.

When by myself, the 4500-5000 rpm shifts really wind that engine up and make it fun.

Don't be afraid to trust the tires, but learn it's limits with experience. I really thought the bag would drag before the rear would let loose! HA!

Enjoy it, welcome to the sickness!

Biffdotorg is right, the front end will come up quickly if you crank the throttle hard enough for the "interactive exhaust valve" to open. Crank with caution.

review the "New Ulysses Owner Information" link near the middle of the top page of the Big Bad and Dirty forum main page.

It has a great collection of the sage advice we have all been using here.

Congrats!! Love mine!

Also, move the ECM from the stock position. See the thread:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/592578.html?1285420073

And +1 on the front wheel coming off the ground. Heed the warning until you're comfortable with the power!

Thanks to all for the advice.

To Nevrnuf, I know Tommy. Over the years I've bought two bikes from him but he couldn't help me with a Buell as I waited to long to buy. I passed on an new XP that Fletchers had a year or so ago. Needed money for my daughters wedding. I did test ride it and that's when I decided that I had to have one some day. From that 1st test ride,I learned how easy the wheel comes up. I thought that was a good thing but now with our laws it could be costly.

I've ridden several other Buells models including two Ulysses and 1125R. The Ulysses seemed best for me. Compared to my BMW LT the 1st gear doesn't seem tall at all. From years of BMW riding, I have lost the need to blip the throttle so I doubt that will be a problem.

From most of the comments I have read, the suspension setting seem to be important. I saw the chart on setting the suspension on this web site and I will probably have to learn how to change it as I hope to take some trips loaded down. I may see Tommy to set it initially once the bike gets here.

Thanks again for all the advice.

The bike came this past Wednesday with 1,010 miles on the OD and I put 50 miles on it that evening. It now has over 1,500 miles on it after going from Pinellas Park to Daytona via the back roads. What fun!

I have a rattle that sounds like it is coming from under the instrument cluster but I can put my finger on the noise. It only occurs at certain RPMs or when coming off the throttle. Sounds like a warranty item too me.

My carpal tunnel bothered me a little too. so I've ordered a crampbuster throttle lever. I hope that will help.

Next, I'll shop for a different windshield. I am 5'8" and I've been use to the protection of the BMW LT. I found my half helmet wants to be a parachute. My full face is better for high speeds.

This bike is more than a Blast. I'm looking for excuses to go somewhere.

The rattle is the horn hitting the inside of the front "number plate". Lots of fixes listed here.

The horn buzzes up against the inside of the flyscreen.
Bend it a bit to fix the issue.
