Has anybody left a true sport tourer for the Ulysses? If so why? I sat on the new Concours and really liked it. Is anybody considering going from the Ulysses to a true sport tourer ala FJR?

I came from a HONDA 1100XX (BLACKBIRD). Reasons - the Honda had incredible acceleration and a (practical) unlimited top end, but I was weak and could not resist the acceleration and knew I was headed for trouble. I ride the Uly twice as much and spend half the time at risk with the law. The Uly is more comfortable and has more usable power. (Almost) never regret the change.

I have a 2004 Concours. My Uly beats it in almost every category with the exception of weather protection.

I haven't "left" the Concours. I just keep it around for when it gets really cold and rainy.

I've had several motorcycles at one point or another, they've included the K1200GT, the R1150RT, and the FJR1300.

The only "sport touring" motorcycle I'd replace the Uly with would be...a Buell S3T.

If I *had* to, it would be a Ducati ST3s.

I've come to the conclusion that if it's not a Buell or a Ducati, it's not really worth it.

Danger Dave here and on Adventure Rider had a test Concours 14 for several days. He writes in details about the difference between the two bikes. By the way he traded his '06 Uly....

For an '08 Uly.

Search on both sites or PM him for details.

Cheers

I've posted the Concours test on my site now too.

I like them - Great motorcycles. I think the FJR handles better. Kwaka is faster.

(Whales compared to the Uly.)

Noticed old mill compared the uly to the S3T for a touring bike. Have been considering the uly but have found several low mileage S3Ts at very attractive prices compared to the ulys. The 2002s seemed to be in new condition. Just thought I would ask for some input on the S3Ts. Wanting a uly but can afford a S3T.

GTMG, I'm lucky enough to own both an'06 ULY and an '06 FJR. All I can say is that they are two totally different bikes.

To sum up the differences I'd say the ULY is more engaging and you always know your on a V twin. Lot's of fun until the weather turns bad or the miles per ride get up there. Here in Florida the excessive heat is a major issue for me.

The FJR is the most comfortable for me, had better weather protection, and way more mid & top end power then the Uly. The weak link on the FJR is the rear suspension. Easily resolved with a Wilber or a Penske(coming soon to my FJR). Pre '06, or GEN I bikes, had major hear issues, like the Uly.

If I want to go the distance the FJR is the tool of choice. If I'm just riding for kicks and doing less then 300 mile days and not riding the interstates I'll take the ULY.

Just one mans opinion... YMMV!

No one tool can do it all, pick the tool that best suits your need and you'll be a happy camper.

You might want to spend a little time here:

I did take a Honda Pacific Coast Plastic Missile in on trade for a ULY, Not sure if that is really a Sport touring, but it is NOT a touring bike, and not really a sporting bike.... No reqrets now that he can even bomb down fire roads

Here's a new take on the BMW sport-tourers. The MSRP isn't too bad, but BMW gets you on accessories and such.

Medic24- I went from a 2000 S3 (not the "T" model but the only difference is lack of bags and shorter bars which I replaced with bars for a "T" model anyway) to a 2007 Uly. Aside from the engine, they are very different bikes. The Ulysses has a MUCH plusher ride than the S3 and a MUCH more comfortable seat. Handling ability is probably similar between the two bikes but they feel very different. The S3's quite a bit shorter and fits my short legs better, and it has better wind protection, but mine at least transmits a lot more vibration to the rider than the Uly does. I do like the dial clock on the S3 (no toggling required between 5 or 6 digital displays like on the Uly). One big plus for the S3 is the big gas tank- it'll go ~250 miles pretty easily between fillups when doing long-distance riding.

There are some S3/S3T bargains to be had out there. Heck, mine's still for sale:

I have had a Honda ST1100 and a BMW R100RT. Right now I have an FJR. I also have an XB12SS. The wind and weather protection on any of the sport Touring bikes is great. I can take any of them on multi-thousand mile trips without a second thought. On a long trip it is no problem to keep on riding when the weather turns bad. I have been spoiled by the light weight, handling, and simplicity of the Buell though. I only use the FJR if the weather is bad or I need to go a long distance. If there was a Buell with close to the wind protection of the FJR I would get rid of the FRJ for it without a second thought.

I sold my Aprilia Futura to buy an '06 Uly. Biggest loss was the weather protection but that is not that big of a deal until you are cruising over 80mph or so. The Uly is quite a bit lighter also, which is a plus. I did like that Aprilia motor though, different type of V twin power than the Uly. Not necessarily better, just different.

I went from a BMW R1150RS, and to be honest, I miss that bike. I will ride the Uly for a couple more years, and then probably go for a R1200R. It is the closest bike to the Uly that BMW makes. The only similarity to the GS is the Uly also has a non functional beak.

I sold my '99 Ducati ST2 to pay for my used '06 Uly.
I do not regret it, yet still miss the Ducati.
I did it mostly for rider comfort, being 6' 4". The ST2 is a bit cramped for me, even after adding Heli-bar risers and lowering the footpegs 1".

They both handle great, and both have great front brakes (feel and power). They both have great suspension.

I like the Ducati motor a lot better. Plenty of low end torque, but also a respectable red line. There is no comparison on sound - Ducati is #1 for me.
You also have the image of Ducati on your side, and everyone thinks you have the fastest bike out there (even though the Uly is more powerful than my ST2 was stock).

My Ducati was a bit more reliable than the Uly, and I liked having a twin that was in balance at idle (no shaking at stops). That damn fan is also annoying on the Uly.
I don't miss the Ducati dry clutch rattle, but my Uly clutch just failed, so maybe it wasn't so bad???
Anyway, all day comfort on the Uly is why is won out, and I still think it is the most comfortable bike I have ridden for under $9k (used). BMW is just too expensive, or too old once you get the price down.

I briefly considered an FJR, but they aren't cheap, and were just too "ordinary" in the end. I like a slightly rough edge to provide character!

I gave up my '97 R1100RT and my GSXR 1K for a Uly. I was looking to consolidate and wanted a bike that was comfortable over the distance, reasonably fast, and low operating casts. So far the Uly is it. I do miss the wind protection sometimes that I had with RT but the Uly is more fun overall. Again there are some days I miss the 160 ponies I had with the gixxer but the Uly is still very entertaining in the twisties. The new Concours has me looking though.

had an ST1300 and Uly at the same time for several months this year. Recently sold the ST because it was not getting any saddle time, the Uly was too much fun. ST had a great motor and a lot of protection but it was not nearly as much fun to ride.

Kevin, i put some miles on the S3T as a touring bike It's a good machine - lower seat height than a Uly, but not quite as manuverable and has lower output electrics. The engine on the Uly is a bit more robust, I'd think, as is the gearbox.

In the end, either makes a great touring bike.

My first Buell was a '98 S3-T that I put 60,000 miles on, and I have an '06 Uly with 31,000 miles at present. They are very different bikes. The S3-T is the most beautiful motorcycle ever mass produced, IMO; it has superior wind protection and a more reasonable seat height. In almost every other aspect, the Uly is superior.
If all you can afford is an S3-T, I say get one. Keep an eye on the saddlebags, as the inners tend to crack, and make sure you have the latest and best rear isolators.
If you can swing the price, though, get the Uly. It's a better bike over all.

Crusty I will have to agree with you on the looks of the S3T. From a long term view the uly would meet my needs for a greater period of time. Thanks for all the info guys. I will keep you updated.

Yeah - now that you mentions it - I've done about 200km on my Thunderbird in the 2 years I have owned the Uly.

Nice to have backup though.

2nd birthday yesterday.

Decided to keep it rather than upgrade too Mr M2.
Bought a 2 year extended warranty/insurance instead.

Still no '08 available here.
