BadWeB has been off the grid since early yesterday morning due to a Verizon T1 line outage.

I apologize for the inconvenience and promise to find a solution to get us to a 100% uptime all the time. I don't care what the cost. We will put an end to this nonsense and soon.

One thing we can all do to help is to send a letter or email to the applicable personnel at Verizon and Speakeasy.net and copy the folks at Westfifth. I'll dig up the contact information and post it right here.

Sorry for the inconvenience. This past year has been horrible in terms of uptime reliability. It's unacceptable. We will get that resolved.

It's amazing how much stuff I get done when the BadWeb is down! That's a compliment Blake!! I try to limit myself to a few minutes of perusing but always spend longer than planned. I hope you get the issue resolved. I'll send whatever needs sent.

I don't care what the cost.

You should put a paypal donations link for those of us who might be willing to help out in this area as well. On occasion I'd send in a few bucks.

See this site:

http://fixedgeargallery.com/

They use both sponsor and anonymous donations from those who can. And they never seem to be down.

I have a server in a data center on a 100 mbit link that isn't doing much of anything. If you can work out the replication, I'd be happy to donate some space on it for a badweb failover site. Then you can just point DNS at it when Verizon takes a dump.

What with the crash last week-end, I figured it was a conspiracy to get us to do Honey-do's on the week-end.
Or maybe go for a ride...

Thanks for ALL you do Blake.

Blake,

Do you have FIOS available? Since I switched all our coms/data to that here 1 1/2 yrs. ago, ZERO downtime.

Blake,
Regarding the Verizon link, is it the link from Verizon to the ISP?
If so, the ISP isn't doing a very good job working with Verizon when problems arise.

We use VZ at work all over the world, the MTTR for most failures is measured in minutes, not hours.
If the ISP or hosting service doesn't have multiple diverse links to different carriers, they are not doing their job.
If one link fails, there should be NO downtime.
The routing protocol (BGP) will reroute on the fly and no one should see a thing except the NOC (Network Operations Center). They in turn coordinate the repair of the failed portion and bring it back online.

Sounds like a bunch of shortcomings with the current situation.

I'm in for a Paypal bump if needed...

Brad

Duh! Didn't think 'bout that; if you're using a 3rd party server rather than your own to host, FIOS won't help.

Money is not an issue. Our sponsors are keeping us in the black.

The folks at Verizon actually asked our server sysadmin if they could wait until the next day to try to resolve the problem. I think that maybe union baloney may be involved. Our server is in NJ.

Rfischer,

We've hit near 2 Mbs outgoing on occasion. I don't think you'll be able to support that via any home type system. It takes a T1 line. Which is what we have up yonder in NJ.

This is no "home system". It is a commercial deal with 5Mb+ of capacity. Engineered for us by Verizon's FIOS unit. It most definitely is not what the FIOS sales folk are peddling door-to-door for home TV/internet/phone.

We have 15 voice lines, 2 fax lines, a dedicated data port and a dedicated UPS port for WorldShip integration with our in-house e-commerce server. It carries data 2-ways simultaneously as our web sites [not shopping carts] are hosted off-site. Synchronicity is a big issue for us therefore, and FIOS does it all with 100% reliability [so far].

We in fact switched from T1 due to unreliability [long story].

For what it's worth...

I love the 20 megabit upstream on my Fios, and 100% reliable so far : D

*sigh* I wish I could get FIOS in my neighborhood. I have been raped by the cable company for far too long.
