Getting back to the subject about the Fischer . . . weren't they supposed to have a video released on their website by now with a running bike? I don't see it! I want to see it!

I haven't posted to this topic yet. Been enjoying all the different perspectives. My take is that...

1. I wish Mr. Fischer all the best and hope he succeeds in producing the first American Superbike since the XR750.

2. I'm skeptical Fischer has the wherewithall to succeed in such a fast paced and ambitious undertaking. But again, I wish the Fischer superbike venture all the best.

3. If Fischer is successful, the price of the bike will likely be beyond what most typical sport bike enthusiasts will pay. That's fine, I'm sure he'll be able to sell 10,000 or so even at Ducatiesque prices.

4. If Fischer uses a Rotax/Aprilia engine, it will never be in my mind an "American" Superbike. Rather it will be an American kitted superbike. Nothing new, just more of what we already have in a different wrapper. Sorry, not interested. I'd rather go desmo.

I am continually amazed and appalled at some of the theories proffered wrt Buell and their engines. Theories like...

Quote:

the pushrod valvetrain is the cause of the failures.

I've got a pushrod V-6 in my Ford Exploder that has seen over 130K miles. NASCAR uses pushrod driven engines. I don't see where that theory has any validity.

Quote:

Three and four valve designs, which I believe are inevitable in HD/Buell future for emissions reasons, pose new and more difficult design challenges if pushrods are kept.

Four valves are necessary for better emmisions?? :?

Someone's been eating to much dim sung or something. ;)

Likewise, the assertion that vibration is the root evil responsible for the reliability woes of the Buell engine is also a baseless theory requiring a HUGE leap of logic to accept. Seems to me the new XB9 engines and the Blast engines are darn near bullet proof as are the more recent 2001/2002 1200cc Thunderstorm engines. Vibration does have its detrimental effects, yes. But it is just another design condition that needs to be addressed. You might be surprised to learn how severe the IL4 vibration environment is. It may easily be far worse at 15,500 rpm than the XB9 is at 7,500 rpm. It really is no big deal if you know how to handle it.

Vibration and poor or lack of lubrication are the root of all evil in rotating and reciprocating equiptment.Vibration will reek havok on bearings and seals. The root cause for bad vibration is imbalance, looseness, misalignment, and bearing failure(usually cause by the others). Everything also has a resonance (a certain point or rpm that it will vibrate the most) which if not running in it constantly can avoid fatigue. Blake, I certainly agree that something running at 15,500 will usually have more vibration problems than something running at 7,500. But, then again weight and balance has a lot to do with this.

I think the author of the assertion probably had in mind failures that are in nature more external to the engine than contained within the crankcase or cylinder heads, like exhaust studs, battery cables and such, maybe the occasional rockerbox leak.
