Iggy,

I'm sure you have all the ability you need to brew beer. The number one thing you need is a passion for good beer, after that the rest is just accedemic. You should be able to go to a local brew supply store and pick up a basic starter kit for cheap money. My recomondation would be to try the starter kit or piece together your own if you don't find one that fits your taste buds. If you can find them, the Grolsch style bottles with the swing tops are the best to use if your just experimenting. That way you don't have to worry about buying a capper right away.

After that the sky is the limit, my buddy Terry and I started doing 5 gallon batches. Then we entered and won two back to back contests, after which we decided that we weren't the only ones that liked our beer so why keep giving it away to judges. (yes I'm stingy) Now we pretty much stick with 30 gallon batches for 2 half-barrel kegs. This lets us bottle 15 gallons (A bunch of bottles) and still have a keg left over for those special occasions....

Here's some links that may be helpful in picking out just the right ingredients for your first brew, as well as plenty of tips and pointers for making it the best tasting beer you've ever had.

cyclone8u, newfie

sounds like a natural progression for me to take. will start in once i get a job offer. graduating right now is pretty annoying.

question to all

we all know that with any booze some people get distribution and others don't (i've never seen berghoff outside of the illinois area). some of these non-distributed brews are pretty good, rivally or surpassing the major leaguers. now i'm a huge guinness fan, but my fear is there's some little irish brewery out there making even better stout but not getting any distro (i hope the beer gods don't strike me dead for this one). anyone have any info?

Rocket: The Theakston's OP gets a top rating from me; VERY good beer! Unfortunately, over here it's a tad bit expensive, over $10 for a six pack of 12 once bottles.

Warp: You sound like a true connoisseur. God bless those monks!

My favorite beer is also my own. A trip to Germany in 1984 got me to brewing in 1985.

Hans is right, German beer on tap in Germany is amazing. vom Fass, bitte!

I have a pilsener ready to tap after 3 months of lagering. It should be good...

Otherwise, Redhook, Widmer, and Hales are among my favorites (local NW breweries).

Hey I'll chime in on this one.
I believe the birthplace of STROH'S
was Detroit.
But my beer of choice is Miller High Life.
My discription would be American Corona.

Used to be a Shorts brewery right here in Longview, Texas, but you couldn't find it in the stores. It's since closed.

Old Milwakee = Old Sweatsocky

How about Iron City?

used to be a shorts brew house in St.Pual also. But alas even back home it is getting harder to find a bottle of Schmidt. How about a Rolling Rock?

a Perminator(the Terminator)
a Moosehead Dry (what a kick in the arse that is)

or for the sweet tooths, Leinies Big Butt

Spidy: I like most good quality beers. My taste varies with the season, my mood, and the food, if any, that I'm eating. I usually enjoy a darker heavier brew, but sometimes a lighter pilsner really hits the spot. By "lighter", I mean a standard Coors, Strohs, Miller, Bud, not a light/diet beer. That just isn't beer, that low calorie diet/light stuff ain't anything but chilled and carbonated dog whiz.

PREACH IT ON THE MOUTIAN BROTHER, it is always funny when i'm at the bar an i see a hot girl i'll buy a bud light and walk over to her give it to her and 99% of the time i get "how did you know i drink bud light". Almost all women drink bud light, i do know a few who drink real beer other than Scudwiser
