Does anyone have any insight about front and rear brakes. Doing a custom build on my S1 and I am rethinking the current stock brake setup. I know Galfer holds the patent on the wave design. I have researched the benefits via a Google search and some say they are better while others say standard round bremebo are better... Some complain about a pulsating at lower (20mph speeds)while others say they don't experience any pulsating I trust people on this forum so looking for any input. Thanks

Giovanni

I thought wave rotors dissipated heat better because of the increased surface area. That's about all I think I know on the subject. And they look kind of spiffy. : )

Heat dissipation is better by around 30% as claimed by Glafer. Better wet stopping and a more linear feel at the lever are also claimed. There are also two versions of the Galfer wave rotor (normal road use or Superbike). People on the r1 forum are claiming that even for normal road use the Superbike wave rotors are the way to go. Just wanted to see if anyone on a Buell had experience with them.

Isn't the rotor surface area decreasedfrom the stock rotors? Looks like they cut a bunch of it out.

Jayvee, "looks" wise, you are correct. Just placing a pad on the round rotor, there is more surface area. However, that doesn't account for the heat created by braking.

The wave rotor runs 30% cooler than the standard round rotor. Cooler mean less the heat and gases don't force the pad away from the wave rotor = more surface area.

Think race slicks on wet pavement (hydro-plain) vs. rain slicks on wet pavement (divert water out the channels in the tires)

the amount of pad touching the rotor is decreased; however, during braking, the heat interferes with that equation pushing the pad away from the rotor.

I have wave rotors on the following tube frame bikes:
96 S1
98 S1W
99 X1

All were converted from the stock 6 button carrier to the wave rotors front and rear.

One of my S2s is a stock S2 rotor set up and the S2 I just picked up has a 6 button carrier like stock S1/X1 etc.

My 2002 S3T has the stock 9 button carrier.

I like the wave rotors!

I don't race, I don't do track days, I just ride!

Just put it on. Looks good! Haven't ridden it yet. Once I do I'll post back my thoughts.

"Isn't the rotor surface area decreased from the stock rotors?"

It sure looks like it from a pad-to-rotor-contact perspective. However, the total radiating surface area of the rotor is increased, which increases rotor cooling.

From what I've read, holes in rotors don't help with venting. The gas just goes through the hole and is trapped by the other pad. Slots release gases, but they have to extend beyond the pad contact area. The holes in the pictured rotor are quite large compared to a regular drilled rotor, so it may be that there's enough room for the gas to vent to the hole before being completely released when the pads move on.

Holes are good for when it rains.
My '79 sporty has dual non-drilled disks up front.
In the rain, they don't do a thing til the heat builds up and then of course they lock you right up.
It's not scary if you know it's coming.
First couple of times = SCARY.

Thanks everyone, I decided I'm going to go with the wave rotors.
