Now that I am not saving up to buy a new 1190SX. I have decided to get an S3 to join the M2. The question I have is there any reason to only look at 99 thru 02 model years or are the changes from the 97 and 98 marginal enough that it should not matter?

The biggest design difference aside from the fuel injection is the exhaust routing through the frame instead of outside it. It makes a big difference to the amount of heat thrown onto your leg. The seat is better, too, with wings to rest your inner thighs on.

I love my '99, even though the fuel injection has given way to a Mikuni. Bought it new.

I am looking at a 98 that has not run for 2 years myself. I currently have a s2 and m2.

IIRC, the 2000-up have several upgrades that are significant. Better FI, lighter crankshaft (?), maybe others? 2001/2002 have improved shift linkage and stouter primary chain adjustment shoe, but those are easily retrofitted to earlier bikes.

I had a 2000 S3 for a few years. It was a great bike.

I would say that the differences are marginal, if you find the right one for the price you are looking at buy it no matter what year. The seats are interchangeable also if you preferred one over the other.

I prefer the later FI models myself and I have owned my 99 since 2005.

All of the upgrades can be done, so I would shop for price and condition.

Thanks guys I will keep all these things in mind as I look. Primarily I will be looking for an S3T don't need the lowers but would like the bag mounts. I was not aware of the change in the lower end and I didn't know there were running changes in the F.I. system.

'99 was the last year of the tapered crank end. Primary chain shoe must be changed if you get the old style. Shift linkage was available as an upgrade kit. Rear shock had a recall, be sure you get the shorter one.

I have a 97 with many upgrades. I prefer having a carb and I like the aesthetics of the older style dash and the bronze colored frame. Many relatively minor changes over the years that can "almost" all be retrofitted to any model that include:

Thunderstorm heads and larger exhaust outlet in 98 (essentially an S1W motor instead of an S! motor; PM front brake changed to Nissin; fairing had a small lip added in 98 along the edge to strengthen it; dash changed from S2 looking dash to more integrated look; logo changed on instruments and brake; fuel injection in 99 as well as under tube header; front and year exhaust mounts changed; shifter and primary chain shoe; seat changed in 99; crank and lifters changed; engine color changed from natural to black in 99, though heads changed to black in 98; gearing lowered in 98 (change in small pulley); alloy swingarm came in 99; rear isolators also evolved over the years as did the shocks (you want the larger late model isolators and the shorter replacement shock, with the corresponding front shock mount); rear brake and rear brake reservoir also changed in 98.

Nice bike even considering the mileage. If this was the end of the drag race season instead of the beginning I would talk to him. Right now I am not going to waste his time.

Berry did not realize till after I posted that was your bike. It is a nice bike and it is what I seem to be looking for. We shall see.

Get a Moto Guzzi Stelvia or Norge. I'm not trying to irritate the Buell gods, I have an S3 and a Moto Guzzi Griso. If you have a M2 a S3 isn't going to be much different. They aren't any more comfortable and we are talking about a fifteen year old bike that is very hard to get parts for.
