I have new iridium plugs with say 150 miles compression reads 120 in both cyclinders X1 engine with about 6k miles engine sat for 12 years before I got it, now in m2 with carb jet 46/195 and the rear plug looks ok however the front plug is soot black. I put my finger over the plug and crank no oil and plug looks dry. No smoke out exhaust that I can tell.
as I ride I can feel it surging as it misses. Old plugs looked the sam as new.. I swapped wires out no difference. Certainly feels like electrical to the front plug is causing the miss. I will check again intake leaks. Also DD exhaust - almost a straight pipe. If I had an exhaust leak in the front would do this? Coil?

Checked the cam position sensor? My S3 drove me nuts with intermittent misfires until I changed my CPS out. There's no engine code for it, shows up as a O2 sensor failure.

I wonder if it could be something simple like a slightly leaking valve seal?

Does it do the surging and missing from scratch with a new set of plugs? Or does it take a while to show up (presumably after the plug has had time to get fouled)?

If so, not too much money and a phone call to Cycle Rama could not only solve the fouling problem, but give you a nice performance bump as a result of a simple porting job as well.

If it is wrong from the moment you put in new plugs, then it does sound like something else, which since you have only one carb would have to be electrical or a cam / valve / pushrod issue.

You can check the cam position sensor with a $80 hand held storage oscilloscope.

You swapped wires, did you swap the cylinder position of the wires on the coil, so you could verify each post of the coil? I don't know if these coils could breakdown internally like that or not just a thought.

Did it start when you changed the plugs,
or did you change plugs to try to fix it?

changed plugs to see if fix but new plugs ended up like old ones. I will spray the intake and exhaust for leaks. then look at the cps and timing. When I got the engine the original cps had melted, so this was aftermarket replacement. I can feel the potential of the engine but the miss is driving me crazy.

Aftermarket single fire cps? I couldn't find one - had to use a dual-fire, which meant changing the ECM also. I now have a M2 ECM and a XL cps, with a dual-fire coil from a M2.

If you are mixing dual-fire and single-fire ignition components, that could be your issue.

Just curious, are those spark plugs DCPR9EIX or DCPR8EIX ?

I didn't know there was a single-fire CPS. I got the Dyna2000 ignition module, run in single-fire mode, had to get a new coil for it is all.

Jayvee those are 9s. I bought a pack of 8 for $50.
I read a little bit about the dyna2K - can you tell me the benefits and what it took to convert your M2 so that it would work ?

I might be a little confused about the dual fire and single fire. The M2 has the original coil. I took the dual fire cam cup out of the X1 and put in the cam cup from the M2. I wonder if I am firing off the wrong slot ie firing off of two and then 1 too late ? Is the sensor 180 out ? I may take the cover off my S2 to look.

Then I got a cps like:

sensor position

The MC Superstore web site said 8's were the "standard plug". Had to look up the X-Ref, and 9 is = 10R12a. OK good.

The Dyna2000 has no benefits on my bike, except for the sound at idle. It's programmable, redline adjustable, configurable, but turns out I don't use or need that. So, it just sounds better idling. Oh well...spend and learn...

The CPS pickup is one part I know the least about.

Set cps as shown I copied my s2 - problem solved. Set at the notch.
I was firing way too late.

It is always nice when a blog comes to a final conclusion. Thanks for letting us know.
