Are all tuber mufflers the same? I am looking at a used one, but the seller doesn't know what bike it came off. It looks like the stock M2 muffler in the picture. My bike is a 2000.

Thanks,

David

Can you post the pic?

I believe all tuber mufflers from about 1997-2002 are the same, possibly the earlier ones as well.

There are a bunch of different colors and outlet styles between 1996 ans 2002. Functionally, they can be divided into two groups: 2" header and 2.5" header. Early Cyclones had a 2" header and somewhere around 2000-2002, I believe they finally got the same 2.5" header as many (but not all) of the S3, X1 and S1W models.

Those two on Ebay have different inlet diameters. So lets start with your header: what diameter is it and we can tell you what will fit your bike. You have a choice of a few different styles.

cyclones got the 2.5 header in 1999. The s1w and s3t had 2.5 headers in 1998. A regular s1 had a 2 header. anything before that was a 2" header.

And some S-model mufflers were stainless, but all the Cyclone are steel.
I thought it was the 97-98 were 2".
From 99-02 are 2.5" for sure. (America models. Europe/Japan, not sure.)

oh well, typing at the same time !

OK, if that's true, he has a 2.5" muffler.
If you like a more subdued, black-out look with rounded endcaps, this is basically the 1999-2002 X1, S3 muffler. I believe this one may be slightly lighter than the second one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150678276059?

It looks like this on the bike:

If you prefer the brushed-stainless look and don't mind the look of it all being welded together, this one (as you already listed):

It looks like this on the bike:

The newer ones have a dent on the top to allow clearance for removal of the primary drain plug.

I bought one from Ebay too as my X1 came with a loud "muffler".
I ended up hating how the bike ran.
It changed the entire character of my bike.
The top end and low end were about the same but in the middle, there was a giant hole in the torque.
I actually had to DOWNSHIFT to pass people on the highway since it was revving in that hole at 60-80 MPH.

You may get better results with your M2 as it has different cams though.

One odd side-effect was that the engine would run hotter. I'm not sure if it was because I was flogging it more to get it to do the same things or if it was some odd back pressure effect.

M2 cams do just fine with the stock muffler. Really no reason to go aftermarket unless you like noise. The X1/S3 greatly benefit from aftermarket exhaust.

Just eyeballing the black muffler on eBay, it sure looks like a 2.5. Question the seller if you are interested, should only take him a minute to measure it.

Just to clarify, since I did look into this for my own M2. All 99+ model years use the same muffler.

The headers for these model years is also basically the same, the only difference being the O2 sensor bung on the X1/S3. A friend with a 99 M2 (black header) stripped the paint and polished it, having exactly the same effect as the polish job I did on my 2000 m.y. stainless header.

They are all 2.5" collectors. (99+ m.y.)

I cannot say at all if the pre 99 and post 99 header muffler combos will work, even those with the 2.5" collector (S1W, S3, S3T) due to the difference in the collector's final alignment.

Greg, I know the S1W got the big stainless can, but cannot say with any certainty which muffler the S3/S3T wore in the 2.5" 98 m.y. bikes. I'll have to look at the sales brochures to get additional information on the pre 99 models specifically.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Mine is the 2.5" inlet, but it sounds like we're not sure if these other ones will definitely mount correctly even if the inlets are the same size. Is that correct?

Wish I could view ebay from work, then I'd be more help to you.

Just eyeballing Greg's pics they look pretty close. Maybe he'd be willing to measure the inlets on the two bikes for length, get an idea of how their angles line up and tell you there...as long as it's a 2.5" hopefully those would all prove interchangeable.

From all the looking and measuring, they seem interchangeable. Of course, you never really know for sure until you actually install one. I'd offer but, I'm not planning to drop the muffler from the S3 any time soon.

I've got bags for it (haven't repainted them yet).

I fell in love with the combo when I saw it too. It's surprisingly different from the S2: much roomier, bigger hole punched in the air but, lacks the vintage / classic feel of it's earlier sibling.
