Was re-torqueing front head bolts and stripped left side. Has anybody used helicoils in their heads

I have used them in the front exhaust studs. But not the head bolts.....what bolt did you strip???

These are not HEAD BOLTS, as there are studs that are in the cases which come up through the cylinder and head with fancy nuts on top ...

There are bolts that attach the front motor mount to the head ...

None of these bolts are to be re-torqued after initial assembly !!!

Id say your screwed there. You cant depend on a heli to hold that stress there, for any real time. Your going to have to have head hole welded up. There really is no room for error in those holes. Either at Advanced cycle in Wisconsin, or cycle rama. No one else.

A HELICOIL will work and last if properly installed ...

The tie breaker is the proper installation of the motor mount and associated parts ...

What Buellistic said,
I have a set of heads that I had to have a set of coils put in, and never had an issue with it. I would say about 20k miles no issue before I upgraded to XB heads...

I've used helicoils before without any trouble, but I was doing some research once and found some alternatives. Non of them have I used yet, but I thought they were interesting. Timesert even has an HD head bolt repair kit.

i moved up a size on the front mount bolt on one head, tapped the head and it worked. i replaced the head later on and had to find a different front mount.

Yeah Id rather of done that and insured a solid clamp force than used a heli.

On the topic of thread repairs.....look at Gardserts (www.gardspecialists.com). We use them extensively for repairs in the power generation industry. They are also used by the military and several other applications. They offer applications for almost any bolt/fastener you will find on a motorcycle. Installation is incredibly simple and hard to do incorrectly.

Gardserts are a permanent thread repair and are impressively better than Helicoils.

It's worth a look.
