Thanks, Science fiction is often used as a warning of potential Bad Things To Come. It seems unlikely that the Pentagon would turn over the launch control for ICBMs to a computer, as seen in Colossus, The Forbin Project, and War Games, but the concept that a computer would be able to react faster, and in the event of the humans being incapacitated, to react at all, keeps coming up in the real world. See the Iron Dome anti missile system that not only reacts faster than a human in the loop can permit, but also decides ( based on pre programmed criteria ) if an incoming missile is going to hit a school, or an empty field, and chooses not to waste a more expensive anti-missile on a harmless incoming cheap unguided rocket. ( not very different than the ones used to bombard Ft. McHenry in 1814 ) This also serves to mask the potential errors the system might make, in case it misses it's target ( to be expected in some not small percentage ) adding to the psychological value of the system for friend & foe. This notion is also a big driver of the push for self driving cars, and the inevitable push to make manual driving illegal. I predict especially motorcycles will be the victims of this next technological/legislative power play, as they will be harder to track by the lidar systems, being pedestrian sized, but car fast. Thus, I can look to science fiction where in some stories, manual operation of a car is a serious crime, and there just are not any kind of recreational vehicles on the public roads. Or airways. The problem, since Ted Kennedy's immigration reform in the mid 60's Congress has enjoyed the privilege of having cheap illegal labor.
