The white house, as scientific a bunch as ever was, just released a report saying that climate change is here, action is needed now.

May I suggest that Barry and Michelle canceling one or two of their vacations planned for the next week and a half would do more to reduce greenhouse gasses than whatever restrictions they plan to put on the rest of us. What a phony, hypocritical POS!

Maybe Al Gore can downsize to a 20,000 sq.ft. house.

It's common sense to stop burning fossil fuels. We need an affordable alternative. Stewardship of the planet is necessary to stay alive. Don't litter. Clean air & water.

All this looks clear and obvious to me.
I just want a better grasp on the science before we go...
Terraforming our own planet.
Especially if the chosen techniques are imposition of an authoritarian planetary regime. Just saying.

Patrick- that's very well-stated. I like the way you think.

Climate change is here, action needed now, says new White House report

By Kevin Liptak, Jethro Mullen and Tom Cohen, CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/06/politics/white-house -climate-energy/

Climate change report warns of frantic future for Florida

A federal report released Tuesday shows much of South Florida could experience dramatic, damaging effects of climate change and rising sea levels within just a few decades.

The Third National Climate Assessment, compiled by more than 300 national experts over the last three years, says climate change threatens Florida’s tourism industry, water supply and public health. Sea levels will rise between 1 to 4 feet by 2100.

Readers here will not find any of this surprising. We all know that the trend has been toward global warming since about 1812. Prior to that was the Little Ice Age during which the Thames and Hudson froze over so hard that not only were there skaters, but farmer’s markets set up on the ice. The Little Ice Age set in about 1320, ending the Medieval Warm period during which the Vikings settled Greenland, Domesday Book showed vineyards in York, Nova Scotia was called Vineland and supported fierce Skraelings who drove the Viking settlers out after lengthy attempts to form Viking settlements in the New World well before Columbus, and monasteries across Europe reported longer growing seasons and better crops. And before that there was another cycle of warm and cold, with rising seas flooding coastal cities during the warm periods, and bad crops and shorter growing and sailing seasons during the cold.

In other words, the Earth has in historic times been warmer and colder than now; and while CO2 may have a warming effect, it certainly was not the cause of the Roman Warm period, nor of the Viking Warm period; nor was lack of CO2 the cause of the cold period that contributed to the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the migrations of the Goths, Visigoths, Huns, various Slavs, and other invading tribes that changed the face and composition of Europe.

The current weather patterns are attributed to La Nina and El Nino, but no climatologist understands the causes of those ocean circulation events, and few even purport to. And my weatherman has predicted rain for our area for weeks, any day now, but so far there hasn’t been much, and Niven and I will go hiking when he gets here.

There is neither new data nor new science in this report, and the assertions that we now know how to predict future hurricane and tornado seasons are absurd. The sea levels have been rising for years, but the seas haven’t reached the levels they were at in 1066, and from my visit to Thermopylae and the distance of those Hot Gates from the Aegean Sea I’d say the seas are considerably lower than they were in the time of the Persian War. In any event they are not rising faster now than they were in 1850.

We will be asked to pay lots more money to avert this new climate disaster, and the costs will be enormous because the effects of the remedies on the economy will be enormous, and cause famines in Africa. Now that they might get in on this industrial progress we are closing the gate in their faces, but that’s the way the climate changes.

At least there are jobs in climate change analysis. So long as you come up with the accepted results. If you don’t, well, you must work for an oil company.

letter to Jerry's website, see above.

1066, Hastings was fought on an isthmus!

Hi Dr. Pournelle,

Some years ago I wrote you regarding a discussion of the impact of the Medieval Warm Period on AGW theories. I said (after apologizing for citing a TV show as a source) that I’d seen a documentary about the battle of Hastings that claimed the battlefield was in a different location than previously supposed because the sea was much higher in the medieval period than now, which led to mistaken readings of the primary sources. At the time, I couldn’t find the name of the show or lay hands on other documentation.

Well, I recently found a similar presentation on YouTube (which, by the way, has turned into a gold mine of historical documentaries). It’s the “Time Team Special #57 (2013), 1066 – The Lost Battlefield” from the BBC.

The punch line is that area around Hastings was “…effectively islands in a sea of marshland” due to the much higher sea level. Hastings was at the end of a peninsula jutting out into the marshes, and the only way to the mainland was the modern-day Hastings Road, which crossed an isthmus just at the southern outskirts of the modern-day town of Battle. Harold established a roadblock at the neck, and the rest is history. In addition to the trivia aspect, it’s very interesting to see just how much of the English coastline was inundated at the time.

The relevant point in the program starts at 31:30 minutes. The link below should take you right to it:

The arctic was going through "extreme warming" back in 1922, at least according to this published in the Monthly Weather Review. Is it possible that some things go in cycles? I know that sounds crazy, but...

http://docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/mwr/050/mwr-050-11 -0589a.pdf#page=1&zoom=auto,0,373

quote:

The Arctic seems to be warming up. Reports from fisherman, seal hunters, and explorers who sail the seas about Spitzbergen and the eastern Arctic, all point to a radical change in climatic conditions, and hitherto underheard-of high temperatures in that part of the earth's surface.
...
Ice conditions were exceptional. In fact, so little ice has never before been noted. The expedition all but established a record, sailing as
far north as 81° 29' in ice-free water. This is the farthest north ever reached with modern oceanographic apparatus.
...
In connection with Dr. Hoel's report, it is of interest to note the unusually warm summer in Arctic Norway and the observations of Capt. Martin Ingebrigsten, who has sailed the eastern Arctic for 54 years past. He says that he first noted warmer conditions in 1918, that since that time it has steadily gotten warmer, and that to-day the Arctic of that region is not recognizable as the same region of 1868 to 1917.

Many old landmarks are so changed as to be unrecognizable. Where formerly great masses of ice were found, there are now often moraines, accumulations of earth and stones. At many points where glaciers formerly extended far into the sea they have entirely disappeared.

Hard to blame that on CO2. It's better to simply start "adjusting" the temperature records. Then destroy the original data. Nothing to see here... Move along... These aren't the droids you're looking for...

Time Team Special 31 (2007) - Britain's Drowned World

Climate change is real. As near as we can tell we've always had climate change.

My experience is from "local to me" areas. In Nebraska, long enough back you have plesiosaurs, the area was a sea. Later you've got Mammoths. Lots of them. The people of the day seem to have eaten them all, but the bones are still here, and the University of Nebraska has a very nice collection. Please understand one place I grew up is the largest sand dune desert on Earth. It's just Nebraskans are crazy and insist on planting grass on them.

Family photo's from about 100 years ago show that the current fields of corn, wheat & alfalfa were..... desert.

Where I live now in the Finger Lakes region of New York the terrain is dominated by glacier effects. The Finger lakes were dredged out by ice, and most notable terrain features are glacier deposits. Pretty much everything in the area is what's left over after the ice scraped it clean and retreated. Plus thousands of years of erosion.

Looking up north in Canada, east of the Rockies, you have the Precambrian shield. The oldest exposed surface on the planet. all the overburden was scraped off in the last ice age, and you can see from space the asteroid impact craters. All those circular lakes.

Tell me a Moose isn't a remnant of the Big-Critter-Age.

The guy who wrote that the Himalayan glaciers were vanishing later admitted he didn't actually do any research, or go look at a glacier, at all. Pure fiction.

However, even though the Sea Ice is increasing ( maybe it'll catch ANOTHER Greenie boat ) it's possible that a massive earthquake & volcanic eruption could make the ice shelf on land slide off suddenly.

Then the seas would indeed rise, especially if it was bad enough that ALL the ice that could slide into the ocean did so.

Of course that would take a quake so bad that most cities on the planet would be in flames from the quake, and the combination of burning cities and the volcanoes might bring about "nuclear winter" sinking the planet into a civilization destroying event...

However, Nuclear Winter has been disproven, so maybe not.

http://www.nationalreview.com/planet-gore/378145/w hat-were-reading-greg-pollowitz

How dost thou lie to me, let me count the ways.

It's really simple.

If someone is pushing a concept, global catastrophe or breakfast cereal, ask what the GOAL is.

For Granola Clusters, it's pretty simple. Profit. The pitch is ..healthy, natural, hippie nostalgia... but the bottom line is the Cereal Company wants to make money.

For Climate cons, the answer is equally simple. What is it they WANT to do about the problem?

Take your money and freedom. Power. For them.

The pitch? you hear it every day. Natural, healthy, blame the running Dog Capitalists.

But when an ACTUAL SCIENTIST does an experiment to see if "Global Warming" can be fixed, he is a pariah. Hate is his reward. what did this fiend do?

He sprinkled a bunch of iron sulfate into the ocean to spark an algae bloom.

Then..... the Salmon catch in the Pacific Northwest spiked. Salmon eat algae. More salmon. yeah! right?

WRONG! it's a TRAGEDY!

http://grist.org/news/rogue-geoengineer-dumps-iron -into-the-pacific-to-create-massive-algal-bloom/

He is to be VILIFIED!!!!!!

why?

Because the PURPOSE of global whatever is POWER.

The Cure Must Be Social Control Of your life. Period.

An actual fix for a problem based on science just ruins the whole thing.

To be fair to Paul Ehrlich his book "The Population Bomb" would have been a valid warning of impending doom, if US scientists hadn't changed the equation.

The "green revolution" Changed the equations, well known since Malthus of how Population increases ( caused by Western medicine ) can cause periodic, worsening famines.

Green Revolution means the creation of GM food crops and hybrids, zero tillage farming, and the herbicides that make that possible, saving precious topsoil..... not "Earth Day".

Without that technology, we WOULD have massive, deadly, and world wide famines. The ONLY reason anyone on this planet has to starve today is the Leaders or Rebels in their country want them to.

1960 tech could not possibly feed the number of people alive on the planet today.

Going "organic" really means "let at least 2 billion people starve to death".

hunters22

Sifo,
It's perfect, the emotion instead of reason problem is a major part of this thread.

I have my own opinions on hunting. I don't expect to convert anyone, or convince you I'm superior in my moral stance here, it's just the attitude I've developed over many years.

IM not so HO I think hunting for food or for varmints is fine, moral, and needful.

Hunting for a nice trophy? Are you going to eat it? Fine. ( I'm also fine if the Village gets fed or the meat goes to market )

Shoot a critter because it's pretty and you want it on the wall, but you're going to leave it to rot? Not so happy.

Varmints....now, I don't expect you to eat rat. The purpose of varmint hunting is to protect the food supply, protect humans, and attempt to balance an unbalanced natural world where we have displaced natural predators.

As a kid I collected bounty on varmints. I didn't go after the "fur bearing" types, being all squeamish, ( having a Mom who was...... and more important did NOT want to clean bloody clothing ) but that was my choice.

I'll leave aside hunting sentient critters. That's a whole different argument, and I can't tell you where the line is. Elephant? Dolphin? If we get too fussy a lot of voters qualify for nuisance permits. IMHO.
