About a year ago today, i discovered i had a leaking rear shock. Buell guy says, "cant be fixed" but i find a shop that can fix, "cant be fixed" type rear shocks (for $180) and Im all good until today. Now its leaking again.

Now I have a theory that the combination of the freezing rear shock (-4C over night) and the hot engine are too blame.Perhaps the hot engine cooks the gas canister while its idling for 5-10mins, and the frozen seals cant deal with the sudden change in temp.

Anyone had a leaking rear shock in winter? I dont know what to do now. I cant really afford to buy a penske or an Ohlins.

yep, mine just started leaking too, not bad, just oil covering the base of the shock, like a mist. i'll let you know what the dealer says. most likely they'll say its okay.

Seals get hard and dont work so well in the cold. They can get brittle and break also. I avoid touching my bike in the extreme cold due to this. It happens on cars too all the time. The Cold is the Motorcycles/cars enemy.
They can stop leaking on their own when it warms up, but not if you break/fracture the seal.

I can imagine that the bikes dont like the cold but none of my other bikes have had this problem. Maybe i have a bad rear shock, surely other people ride in colder weather than I do. No other rear shock leaks out there?

Last night I noticed mine had a light covering of oil on the piston rod. I rode to work yesterday and it was around 32F, rode home from a friends last night, about the same temp. Started looking over my bike and then found it, it was like I got a little overspray of wd40 on it.

So this is normal in these temps? Because I am getting embarrassed every time I go back to the dealership for another thing breaking. The funny thing is that they not only know my name when I walk in the door, they can spell my last name, I had teachers that could't spell my last name! They even recommended me to look into the extended warranty, and I still have over a year until my original warranty runs out!

Mine is more than a mist. Ive got a sticky puddle on the swing arm where it drips off the bottom of the shock. I think your spray/mist might be ok. I definately have a problem.

Funny, (well not so funny)I just found the same thing as you Paul. We had a 20 degree day with a killer windchill. I rode to work and home, now I have a quarter size puddle, some on the swingarm and on the shockshaft.
