This is my 'BuellShark' this summer before I swapped out the self-destructing Force pipe for the Micron serpent. I read this forum all the time but I haven't posted much--so this the first look at my "gills" cut into the airbox and my rattle-can, counter-shaded paint job, as well as the rest of the bolt-on mods.

Next up for the XB9Shark : billet levers and signals, radar detector (weather resistant?), custom seat (perhaps including some shark or stingray leather), and a boatload of polishing and painting refinements.

Thanks to Al @ American Sport Bike, Dave S & the boys @ Appleton H-D/Buell, and all you fellow BadWeb brothers--I just love these bikes.

Nice! What did you cut your "gills" with? Dremel?

Very nice, Danny.

Let's hope you will post more.

I think the "gills" are not only original but very successful as well.

Thanks y'all.

Yup, a rotary tool did the job after months of drawing them on my airbox cover w/ a sharpie and studying them to get just the right proportions.
Originally I thought they'd be like hot-rod louvers or shark gills (letting hot air or water exit), but then as I learned more about the airbox I thought it'd be better to make them beveled the other way like inlets to force or allow more air in.
The K&N filter is visible through the aluminum mesh I added, but to be perfectly honest, the complexities of the airflow/pressure dynamics don't leave me completely convinced that it's superior to a less-open airbox, and that's been discussed quite a bit on this site. The real test is pinning the throttle on the open road, and w/ the Micron system now all I know is that it's way stronger all through the rev range than ever before. (Open/closed airbox road tests in the spring, I reckon).

More later, I just got called in for snow removal. Peace.

That is a sharp looking airbox cover Danny. Speaking of rattle can jobs, just finished my new tailpiece (thank you Odie). Used a can of graphite grey from Buell to paint the subframe and tail.

Bike looks great Danny! The fins are very original. I was thinking about cutting in to my airbox and putting mesh in those holes and all of the scoops. What did you use for mesh and how did you attach it?

Olin, I looked quite a bit for different screen, grate, or mesh. Then saw some on ebay, maybe a 6" x 6' piece, for 10 bucks advertised for car and bike custom jobs, thought, that's a good deal. THEN, walking through the hardware store saw the same stuff, a whole roll of it maybe 6" x 15feet or so, for like 4 bucks. What's it labeled for? GUTTER GUARD, you know to keep leaves out. They had some diff types but since i've seen this same stuff on dudes' Civics and Celicas, etc.--same bright Aluminum extruded diamond mesh. Looks great, cheap as dirt, easy to cut and shape. Was told/tried to use a good epoxy to stick it--that'd work well if you've got a lot of epoxy to use, but due to it's thin-mesh-not-a-lot-of-suface-area-extruded-non-fl atness I just eventually used a couple super-fat lines of hot-glue all around the perimeter. Works swell.

Tx, the tail looks clean. I like most changes that clean-up and simplify the lines and colors. That's actually how I got started on the shark theme--staring @ my 2003 yellow Lightning and seeing an underlying composition primarily of grays; grays and silvers being the predominant theme that I thought I could emphasize.

Terminator, your bike and gear look great together. I really dig that cobalt blue color, very cool. Dig those rim stripes, too, nice contrast . Are those carbon fiber hand guards? Where from?

Thanks Danny! I know most of you probably don't like that I left the reflectors on my bike, but I'm thinking since they're a safety feature they should stay on since they obscure the otherwise clean lines I'm trying to emphasize. I'm thinking of finding something else for the tail section reflectors. Maybe something that sticks on the subframe so they don't hang down like the stockers do. Anyone got any ideas?

Oh and a funny note (well not very funny to me since I'm the one that's got to fix it): I took this pic yesterday before I mounted the license plate bracket under the tail light. Within 15 minutes I had managed to scratch my shiny new paint job on the left side of the tail section with my drill's chuck because I was too lazy to take the plate bracket off and bring it over to the work bench to drill the bolt holes for the license plate. That's what I get for trying to avoid turning two nuts to take it off. Now I've got to take the whole tail section apart, prep it once more for paint, reshoot it, and then start all over with the assembly. LOL! I'm really impressed with myself that I didn't even toss anything across the garage when I did it. I just stood up, drained my beer, let go with a super loud belch, and went in the house for the rest of the night leaving all my tools lying around where I left them. My brother was over and he asked if I had finished the job. I just said, "Yep" and turned on the TV. Just a few short years ago I'd have probably destroyed the drill or something worse. The meds must be working. LOL!
