It seems like everyone w/ a Buell has upgraded/installed an aftermarket exhaust... am I imagining this or am I the only one with the stock? : ) I would like to change for the better sound/more power but I don’t have the patience to send out a part to have it changed and risk screwing up the install. Also… it seems like everyone who installs the race kit or changes their ecm has problems… am I imagining this too? Thanks : )

Well, I still have my factory exhaust. Waiting to see what results Al has with his shoot out before making a choice. Then its a new exhaust and a race ECM.

I don't want anything really loud. I'm looking for what a Sportster with cycle shack or SE slip ons sounds like. Deep but no cackle.

Chuck

Same as 99buellx1. I have stock exhaust sitting on a shelf in the garage next to the stock ECM, stock air cleaner, and rubber snorkel insert. The race dual exit muffler sounds very nice, would not want it to quiet as the cage might not hear me. Drive like your invisible to the cage but make sure they can hear you.

I'll admit to being a stocker. Mostly because of fund'ages, but also have a year left on my extended warranty (I know it should not matter, but I don't go round handing out excuses for someone to not honor the warranty...). I also came up from a smaller bike, so I'm not feeling under-powered yet.
The hard part is deciding which one to ride...

Tubers needed exhaust and carb upgrades, I did it. XB9R much better with factory race kit, I did it. XB12R with interactive exhaust, hard to beat for ALL around power and it's free, I didn't do it. Stock exhaust is quiet and I don't like the "Look at me" syndrome anyway. Anyone (well almost) can ride much faster in the stealth mode. Some people just have to be obnoxious.
No sir, I don't like it.
Stock exhaust.

I have TWO of them.

The one I took of my nine, and the one I took off my twelve!

Replaced both of them with Drummers and I am glad I did. The music is sweet and the torque delivery is entirely more satisfactory.

I run my stocker. For the money, I don't see the point of changing just for sound. I don't mind the sound of the stock exhaust and my neighbors appreciate it too, I'm sure. Maybe if we ever find out there is a significant HP increase with something else, but I'm not spending over $500 for 2hp.

On my bike the way it rode really improved which is the only reason I did it...I wish it wasn't so loud but I recently heard my bike from afar when my buddy rode it and it is actually seems much louder when on the bike then when not.

In any case, if I do decide to get another Buell I will look into the 12 and keeping it mostly stock. I have gotten to a point where I am more focused maintaining a good balance between performance and reliability rather than getting attention.

Ah yes, performance vs attention.
The other night my wife and I were at a bar on Main street and a guy (notice I didn't mention "biker") gets on his motorcycle and rides it to the bar across the street. My wife asks "Why didn't he just leave his bike parked where it was and walk across?"
I replied "Because he didn't want to leave his personality behind"

I have the stock exhaust with a modification to it. (XB12S)It is a little bit louder, but not loud like the drummers or race muffler. My buddy had the race muffler on his XB12R and when I rode it for any distance, the sound really was annoying to me. It also runs a little better too with the modification with out loosing bottom end.

The main reason I put the D & D on, was because I couldn't stand the mechanical sounds of the stock bike.
It sounded like it was constantly on the verge of blowing up.

My 9S is stock except for the 12 airbox and K&N.

It runs perfectly, so I am not going to mess with it.

Stock since I just purchased my 12Ss but I always intended to keep it that way.

My interest in the shootout results has been piqued though... I might consider changing if I can keep the low end and not lose too much mileage (I'm disappointed with my just over 40 MPG in 70MPH freeway driving for the last tankful, after 50+ during slower break in driving). If the gains are at the expense of low RPM power and mileage then I'll sort of just end up with a rice rocket, no?

My bike is just over one year old & still stock.
I do have a race kit coming though.

I've got a stock exhaust and I've little motivation to replace it. I'm happy with the performance and any modification tends to affect reliability. I've got a 2006 XB12Ss Lightning Long. Any Yahoo can hold the throttle open in a straight line, that doesn't take any skill. I'm more interested in maintaining speed in a corner and the exhaust has nothing to do with that.

On my '01 M2L, I got the Wileyco slip on. I also gutted the stock airbox, then.... a week ago I put the stock muffler back on. I have been having tinitus, er, ear noises, and wanted to be able to sneak back into the 'hood at midnight. The Odd thing is, I mellowed the bark but the bite is not muted all that much. I'll swap back when I feel like painting the rust on the stock can.

Still stock here also. I don't like getting tickets and twice I have been nailed because I was heard before seen on my old bike. I also ride with a couple of CHP officers and they don't ride with anyone that has a loud pipe.

If any of you folks would like to make some room in your garage I would be happy to pay shipping and a twelve pack of good beer for your stock 9 pipe. Mine is pretty beat up and real rusty.

Stock and enjoying it. I have an XL1200C that has many mods and drag pipes and the Buell is quiet, faster and can fly under the radar! Plus I like to hear the tall valve train
