My buddy is thinking about selling his 1988 Ducati, and picking up a more modern bike. He only wants a V-Twin sportbike, no cruisers, no in-line fours. He will only spend about 4,000 max total for the bike, anyone have any suggestions. I think the RC-51 will not fall in this price range. Ducatis are too expensive and parts are impossible to get here, along with the other Italian bikes. I don't think he wants a Buell because I have one. Any helpful suggestions appreciated. | ||

How about a newer Duc., Like a 900SS or a Monster Dark? You may find one in this range. Mabey a TL1000S Suzuki? The SV will be outside of your price range I think a Honda Super Hawk might be in that range as well. I have not rode any of them except a Monster Dark. It was a nice bike. | ||

For 4 grand, if he's lucky, your friend might snag a Suzuki TL-1000R at that price. Your friend could also get a Suzuki TL-1000S if he can find one. | ||

If he looks around, he could probably find a 2003 XB9S for only $500 more, ($4500). That way, he would be on the right bus from the git go. Not too far out of budget for what you get: the best buy in motorcycling. | ||

Non-Buell v-twin sportbike for $4k? Superhawk would be my first vote. I was looking into getting one back in '03. At that time you could buy clean used ones all day for $5k. TL-S is in the same category but a bit more hairy and probably harder to find for the price. | ||

I always thought the TL was a little piggy when I had been on them, but if he can find an RC51 for that price he should jump on it. The Superhawk is a good bike also. If he was to spend another 500-1000 dollars he could pretty much get his hands on just about anything if he wasn't really worried about what year or if they have some miles on them. | ||

I'd vote for an SV650. They can be had under that price range and there are lots of parts available to modify it if you want to. They're solid as a rock and can take a lot of abuse! The only money my riding friends have spent on them is upgrading the suspensions and tires. They have Traxxion Dynamics fork kits and a GSXR750 rear shock which were purchased on Ebay for $25.00. | ||

pre 03 sv650 motors are less prone to self destruction too. Guess how I know. Our race bike was one of the first of the 03+ race bikes to have the motor pop. It was stock with less than 800 miles on it. FWIW I have not heard of any problems with the 1000 motors. | ||

I would tell him to either keep the Duc, or go to a more expensive bike. Anything in between will be spending more money for less bike (IMHO). | ||

If the '88 Duck is a Paso, tell him to keep it. I've got an '88 Paso Limited and -- while heavy and (by today's standards) underpowered -- it tracks like only a Ducati can. Kinda good lookin', too... GUZZIMON>>>>>>>>>>>>> | ||

Guzzimon, what's a '88 Paso Limited? My friend has a 907ie and he loves it that much he won't upgrade to a 916. Mind you, a Paso is more practical. You mention the Paso as 'kinda good lookin' too.....' I think they look fabulous in blue. It really shows off the Ferrari Testerossa styling of the day, which is strange because red doesn't suit the Paso as well as the blue. Rocket | ||

Diablobrian, I think the only '03+ SV650's that were having the problem with the cranks breaking were the ones being used in a race setting. I wrang the living sh*t out of my '03 SV650S for 11K miles before I sold it and that thing ran like a champ. Had pretty much all the usual racing stuff, even raced it a handful of times, and never had a problem. I wouldn't be worried about buying another one at all, they are wonderful bikes for the price.} | ||

the 03+ SV650 crank problem is very hit and miss. It has to do with lateral thrust and the fact they eliminated the washers used to control it in the earlier models. I just wanted to warn of potentially serious problems. We were one of the ones it happened to right before the story broke in Road Racing World. Luck of the draw. the 750 paso is a very underated bike - (once you remove the weber carb.) i own a paso ltd. and it is for sale! wonderful bike! i can't ride it anymore because the love affair just starts all over again!! bought a Xb 9S AND LOVE IT! | ||

Yeah, he has a 750 Paso, not sure if it is limited? It is blue, I guess only 1 of 32 ever imported into the US. Most if not all of those are probably gone now. It is the last of its breed. He isn't into tracking bikes, not like there is a place around here to do that anyway. Just wants a good reliable bike, that is easy to work on and parts aren't too expensive. | ||

4 Gs would get a very nicely-sorted tuber, with upgrades and the like -- he doesn't want a Buell cuz YOU have one? hmmmmm -- sounds a little odd -- does one of you leave the room if you're both wearing jeans and t-shirts? ;-} |
