Ray, you betcha!! Now if they would just lose the stock headlight. I really hate the way that light looks, kinda sleepy & dopey eyed.

The more & more I look at the rod, the more I can see myself owning one. When they first came out I thought it was ugly as hell, but what a motor it had. Now with the customizers jumping on board & showing what can be done, its definately whetting my appetite.

Imonabuss,

Your comments are appreciated. Fortunately, the X1 will not be wearing out in the near future so Buell and/or HD have plenty of time to R&D a bike to my liking. If Tampon Bikes are Buells future then it looks like the burden is on HD to appeal to my criteria.

Knee clearance has not been an issue with Buell for years, so I find that analogy redundant. Additionally, sport bikes in the supersport, superbike and formula extreme categories fit well even though I am a 6'2", 200#, athletic build.

I don't care for cruisers (read: feet forward, non-backroad bikes) so that eliminates the V-Rod as it is configured today. I am rebuilding my stable again and it will contain a sport bike (StreetFighters and StreetTrackers qualify well), dual purpose bike and a sport touring bike. The X1 fills the bill for all three at the moment even though it is a compromise. FYI, it handles fantastic on the dirt and gravel roads. Just would not want to be doing any log jumping with it for obvious design reasons. LOL

My preferences tend towards HP and torque. I like the power to come on at lower RPM's and dislike a narrow powerband at the high side of the tack. In other words, usable horsepower for the street. Additionally, considering the EPA and CARB regulations as well as impending smog and noise checks, I am looking for bikes that meet these criteria without having to add "race only" components. The addition of a digital fuel optimizer is acceptable as it can be easily adjusted back to stock settings for these inspections.

Bottom line is there are many bikes that meet and exceed these criteria on the market and will most likely remain available for the long term. I have no qualms with any companies marketing strategy and profit plan. I am just a consumer that knows what he wants and will buy it from whomever makes it.

"Tampon Bikes" ?

I'm trying to figure that one out. Does your local dealership keep a string tied to their new Buells?

Aesquire asked:
Um... no intention to disparage Mr. Buell. Do you think I could get him to sign my gas tank if I make a Brag ride & he's there?

Yep, don't think there's any problem with that. Just get in line or wave a pen in his direction. ;)

Uh, it is a Buell gas tank, right? :)

Aside from the "bodywork" atop the bike, I'd have to say yes

Spidey, listen to the sound on the video link I posted. Sounds pretty good with the dual supertraps on it.

I have heard it before. It still isn't throaty American obnoxious loud.
It is Euro car rally sport loud. It sounds good but not my kinda good. I do like it but I think H-D cut there throat by not introducing a VRSCA touring bike.

Spidey...I like your point. Then again, HD has a few years to develop the family of bikes based on the V-Rod engine before the EPA shuts them down or gets sued for discriminatory trade practices. The Family of Bikes concept compliments of a Harley VP's speech within the last 18 months. The EPA statement just a matter of fact concerning CARB 2008 most likely becoming EPA 2010. That is unless HD and the AMA can keep the EPA under their thumb for another few years. LOL

Nevco1,

Why is the EPA or CARB 2008 an issue for HD?

Noise and emmissions. I kind of figured at least a part of the reason for both the V-Rod and XB engines to get slightly downsized and higher rev'd was to start to bring them into compliance under the incoming guidelines. When you mix politics with mechanics you get little good.

Blake...Today it isn't and tomorrow I hope it won't be. In my next life, I hope to be an engineer. However, in this one, I am just a lowly consumer with the most dangerous weapon...just a little (and probably wrong) information. LOL

FYI, I found Spiderman's post on the TPS thread most interesting. I read a lot about power, modifications, etc...Yet this is the first time I read about getting 63 MPG with an XB. Now that, combined with the power and handling sounds like a major benefit to the consumer. IMHO

Noise regs are bullshit. A moderately muffled big twin is beautiful music compared to a sewing machine on steroid sound of most inlines. It isn't fair

The sound of a bike with drag pipes engine braking is one of the worst sounds to come out of any internal combustion engine IMHO.

Depending on how you have your bike carbed, you can eliminate that raspy assed noise you mention Rick. I never cared for that either. I liked the acceleration noise, but the blat blat noise on decel would drive ya nutz. Get rid of any & all exhaust leaks & carb the bike right & the noise goes away.
