New guy, I'm sure some of this has been covered ad nauseum, but this is what do guys do - ask questions! Thx in advance

stock handlebars - why not clip ons? Built into the triple clamp fixes the angle on the bars

exhaust direction - any reason (that we know of) Buell didn't angle the exhaust away from the rear rotor?

mirrors - has anyone tried drilling out the rivets where the stalk meets the baseplate on the fairing and replace with bolts, so the mirrors can be tightened and held in a more forward position?

mirrors - easy to unbolt, but didn't see if they were easy to unhook the wiring or not for track use

rear license plate/turn signals - designed to be easy to pull for track use?

Forks - curious if anyone has fitted the new big piston forks. Would require going with regular twin disks, and dumping the ZTL

Wheelies - roll on throttle only, very willing in 1st gear, 2nd no, 3rd no. Typical? Riding a buddy's 1098R I recall it would pull up in 2nd easily, and I believe even 3rd. (note, the Ducati had termigoni exhaust and probably a ecm)

Mirrors just unplug, license plate, turn signals are easy enough, as I remember you might have to take off tail section to get to plugs. Ohlins just started to offer a cartridge kit for the 1125.

Change your exhaust and go with a Erik Buell Racing ECM and it will pull up fine.

>> stock handlebars - why not clip ons?
I suspect for part count reduction and incremental weight savings.

>> exhaust direction - any reason (that we know of) Buell didn't angle the exhaust away from the rear rotor?
The generally accepted answer is that aiming the outlets at the rotor/swingarm helps diffuse the sound allowing it to pass epa sound tests.

>> mirrors - has anyone tried drilling out the rivets where the stalk meets the baseplate on the fairing and replace with bolts, so the mirrors can be tightened and held in a more forward position?
I have a limp wrist mirror at home was wondering the same thing.

>> mirrors - easy to unbolt, but didn't see if they were easy to unhook the wiring or not for track use
Yep - connectors are right under the headlight and easy to access.

>> rear license plate/turn signals - designed to be easy to pull for track use?
For the most part yes. Three or four bolts hold the plate assembly but I found the turn signal connectors hard to reach. I ended up unbolting the tail plastics to get better access.

>> Forks - curious if anyone has fitted the new big piston forks. Would require going with regular twin disks, and dumping the ZTL
I think there is one person on here that is doing just that.

>> Wheelies - roll on throttle only, very willing in 1st gear, 2nd no, 3rd no. Typical? Riding a buddy's 1098R I recall it would pull up in 2nd easily, and I believe even 3rd.
Mine is similar, but I'm running stock tune. I suspect that with a pipe and proper tune we should be able to get it up in second pretty easy

I wondered that too, but aftermarket clip-ons are available if you desire. I've been happy with the stock tree. My guess is that there is a weight and cost savings by having it all as one piece instead of multiple pieces. The bars themselves do come out of the triple tree for easy replacement if they get bent.

Noise emissions. It turns out a solid object like the swingarm and rotor can reduce the noise recorded by a decibel meter. Down side is that it covers the wheel in soot. Aftermarket exhaust tips can be slid on to resolve this.

mirrors -

I am not aware of anyone that has done that.

The mirrors do easily come off for track days. Two bolts, undo the turn signal wire, and then use whatever fasteners you have to replace the two bolts you removed.

rear license plate/turn signals

Same deal as the mirrors. Couple screws, disconnect wires, enjoy.

Don't pull the fuse for the headlight, as it will prevent the bike from starting. If you desire to turn off the headlight, unplug the main connector under the front fairing.

Erik Buell Racing has big piston forks that work with the ZTL2.

Wheelies

Mine will wheelie with ease in first and second, but requires a little effort but will do it in 3rd. It is even easier on my CR in 3rd, due to the shorter gearing.

I guess all the questions are respectively answered.
On the wheelie thing though, I would like to add, mine has always done effortless 2nd gear wheelies off the throttle, and 3rd is achievable too with some effort, even in stock form...Of course this was accomplished and learned by accident, and not in any way intentional.

Mine had a limp wrist mirror. I used a Dremel to grind out the pivot rivets on both mirrors and replaced them with bolts, nuts, washers and some loc-tite. They've been good for about 4000 miles since making the "repair".

My 1125R will power wheelie second if I roll on it hard at the right RPM--usually around 7000 or so but I don't remember for sure because I'm usually looking at the road and not the gauges. It's a bit less willing when mostly full of fuel. I've got a Barker exhaust with a quiet core but no ECM.. yet.

You can also peen the rivet that's there, to tighten.
Remove them and use a hammer and anvil to mash the rivet tighter.
I tried all kinds of things to make the mirrors work for me, to no avail.

I finally gave up and replaced them with Firebolt long-stems and ran the T/S to my front marker lights.

Work on the wheelies, I can pull up in 1st and 2nd and I live at 5000' ASL.
I took a trip to Texas a couple of years ago. elevation 35' ASL.
Almost wound up with Loretta in my lap at 25 mph she stood up so fast.

Welcome to the madness
Zack

They can be had on fleebay for a little less than $100 IIRC. Or you can buy a 90 degree aluminum mandrel bend and make your own. I made mine with a tight slip fit and used some high temp silicone to "glue" them on.

The combination of a good aftermarket pipe and Erik Buell Racing's race ECM will get you wheelies from 1st through 3rd with no problems and you'll get one in 4th on occasion.

See http://www.americansportbike.com/Exhaust_Shootout. html for the exhaust info. All pipes are not created equally. Read, review, research and then make your own decision about what you want or need.
