Hi guys,

I've been having some issues with the blast ('07 ~2400 miles, all stock) for a bit of time now- recently it cut out completely while riding and wouldn't start back up.

Symptoms I experienced- sluggish start from 1st as if it wasn't getting enough gas, could barely move with a second person (I have an '09 blast to compare)
It then started losing power when opening the throttle. If you keep it open, engine stops, but can be restarted. Occasionally the carb backfired. Its was as if something was clogged and the backfire solved the problem. Bike would run perfectly only to start losing power again after a few blocks.
Died on me on the way home and doesn't start back up.

Heard this closely resembles boot/vacuum issues, so I replaced the coupler, changed to new spark (iridium), checked fuel lines, replaced battery, fuel in tank. I just bypassed the kickstand, clutch, and BAS hoping that would be the issue but to no avail (clutch diode 2 invert didn't seem to work for me). I tied the wires together on both ends to be sure

Carb has definitely been taken apart- screws on top cover were replaced (regular hardware screws with matching thread, could this play a role)? I opened it- diaphragm is intact. Carb sucks air when trying to start up.

With a spritz of starter fluid, turns over but dies as soon as it burns out. LED light on ignition blinking. One other thing to consider- oil lamp is on pretty much any time the bike isn't running (or trying to start). It first came on when the bike died- oil level seems fine.

I've been reading other threads to try those solutions but no luck yet. Any other sensors perhaps? Mechanically it seems sound. Any ideas what to try next? Just moved to Syracuse- don't have a garage and only basic tools but anything helps. First post, if in wrong section please let me know and i'll move it.

Thanks

-D

Welcome!
Oil light should be on if the engine isn't running.
If you bypassed other switches, the clutch diode flip is redundant.
If it runs fine then doesn't, its very indicative of a bad ignition module. It's also indicative of fuel starvation caused by the gas tank not venting.
Is it a California model?

Watch the LED. Does it flash consistently, with every power stroke when it won't start? Or flash erratically or every 3rd power stroke or flash with several short flashes after?

Thanks!

Currently doesn't start at all- but symptoms seem to point to lack of fuel. Not certain about the cali model (I don't think it is- manufactured on the east coast). I read your 2004 post regarding venting issues- attempted without gas cap. Still no luck.
(Clutch bypass started working now though)

Should I check the float?

LED lights up consistently every stroke

I caution anybody who's not familiar with carbs to not take them apart. If you drop the float bowl and gas pours out, it should start (ie:fuel is there) and probably not a float setting issue.
You have to make sure it sparks if the LED is flashing. It can flash without spark. It can't spark without flash.
Has it ever run on par with your 2009 (even if intermittently)?
How molested is this bike? Fully stock? Exhaust changed? Etc.
Did you do anything to the bike before it had trouble or did you buy it with trouble?
Are you using a factory intake boot or a substitute?
It's an odd problem, just trying to sort it out from the beginning. Fuel and ignition problems tend to mimick each other. You might have more than one problem. It's only got 2400 miles so it's basically brand new (unless someone seriously messed it up). How is the primary chain adjustment? Spacer still on the adjuster bolt?
