Ok here goes......

I'm a proud new owner of a 2003 black buell blast. I have even started making payments and I'd like to mod it :)....welcome to the dark side.

I have been reading posts to this board and decided to ask a couple questions. If this topic has been covered before in the archives just let me know and I will track the post down.

While I like the overall aesthetics of the blast I would really like to replace the flyscreen with a "cafe racer" style flyscreen/windscreen. I've seen pics of several bikes with them in the picture section. I'm looking for advice on where to find, what to use etc. Links or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

On the same thread, any suggestions for mirror replacements that don't stick straight up? I would like something a little more sleek.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or comments are appreciated. Thanks

Blastman

Thanks EZ, I did see the one on the JC Whitney web site, but I was concerned that it wouldn't fit or that it would "look" to big for the blast. Does anyone have either of these one their blasts? A picture would help, I appreciate any/all help :) I promise to post pics along the way .....

Charley has one on his bike, Xgecko, and others - see the pictures in the picture section - you'll have to trim it a bit with a Dremel - but if your carefull - use paper tape to enclose your cutting so you won't mar finish - its not hard to do and they do look nice. L-P sells a smaller version of the same thing - which may or may not need trimming. Got Thump?! Just Blasting on the Dark side! EZ

Another option on the cafe fairing-- Chaparral has one from L-P for $40. (Couldn't find it through the regular menu, just do a search on the site for "cafe fairing".) There's even a pic on their site, but not of a Blast. Some people in the pic section have them on, though. Also, something to consider on the mirrors-I put on the Crossroads bars, and now I actually have started to like the stockers. With any bars that are lower and farther forward, the mirrors stick up less and look more natural on the bike. So, if you were planning on replacing the bars, you may want to check out how the stock mirrors look on the new bars. Just one guy's opinion, YMMV. The most important thing is, ride it and have fun!

Thanks newblaster that gives me some food for thought. I will pick up a fairing then see how the mirrors strike me. I will probably replace the stock bars with the crossroad replacements, but not for at least a little while. Mirrors are pretty inexpensive, I may pick up an extra pair to use until then. Thanks for the advise....

Hey folks, I know some of you guys have this Chaparral/Lockhart-Philips Universal fairing on mounted on your Blasts. I got one for Christmas and I’m having some trouble mounting it. I cannot locate any detailed pictures of how others have mounted theirs. So, I am looking for either some good written descriptions and/or pictures on just how this was mounted to your bike.

Please help a brother out! Thanks and Merry Christmas!

My Blacks fairing was pretty straight forward - the brackets were easy - on the Red I cut the end of the fairing bracket off - took off the bezel, added black rubber trim moulding to the inner circle edge of the fairing touching the bulb glass - supplied - using the upper fairing bracket arms as upper suport for the fairing and using their attaching hardware, and skipping the lower mounting brackets for using a couple of 1/4" width 3' long (cut to 1/3rd length for final usage)zip ties (weight 1/16lb vs. 2lbs of lower bracket suport) to hold the fairing down and tight to the light square to the upper brackets - works - looks good and is even as light than the stock unit while blocking wind - lol - hope this helps -

I've seen some pictures on this site with a dual headlight fairing, much like the Yamaha style. Where can you order that stateside (cost?), and how difficult is it to install. I've seen the universal fairing in catalogs (like the crossroad performance Blast) but unable to locate the dual headlight one. Any direction is appreciated.

Hey guys, I'm trying to replace the flyscreen on the blast. The Ducati Monster S4R has a pretty neat fairing that looks like will fit the Blast. Has anyone attempted this? The Ducati fairing bolts on in a different place, but the Blast does have bolts in that spot. Only thing is the metal brackets that hold the current flyscreen on. I'm not sure if they'll be in the way. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks.

To answer your question from the exhaust section - I got my fairing at Wild Hair - a link in the links you can't find here section of the TKV - regular ordering of said system is now not possible, but they did tell me they could arrange for a special order - the name of the lighting system is Alien Lighting with fairing - came in an assortment of colors - from Germany - picked it for its ability to run halogen lights in foggy SF and for being inexpensive - compaired to a lot of units.
Yeah I found part of the origional fairing bracket usefull for the Red and used tin snips, a sander, and then flat black rustoleum exterior metal paint to make it look like it was made that way. lol
So - yeah you could probably do the same for the Duc fly fairing - yeah it is a cool set up and one of the origional styles I was looking at before I decided to upgrade the hole lighting system. I choose the Mod Cafe for the Red so I'd have something to tuck into facing hard wind - it works - so it stays for now.
Hope that helps!

Now this is the next set up I plan running - we'll see it - answers most needs and looks like I could even trade the signals out - or so it looks.

Ok - the above is the inexpensive set up I'm planning on running, but another british sight had a nice heavyduty ultralight set up - a bit pricey, yet the fact that you can replace parts, if something happens, without replacing the whole thing would/could pay off for itself, and it would be even a lighter unit...hmm....of course there is the new Acerbis option also and it looks slick all flat black

http://www.spieglerusa.com/body_pages/mig_lights.cfm

and the Acerbis

I'd say it would be pretty easy these days to make your bike unique! Some nice stuff is out there!

V Nice but pricey (Spiegler mig lights) however they fail to say what kind of bulb they use (H3,H4,H7). Would suck to spend that kind of money and not be able to easily buy replacement bulbs.I will email them.

I'm looking at both the Chaparral and JC Whitney cafe style fairings... from the photos it looks as if they are very similar. Any pros or cons to either?

Also other than looking very nice how much do tehy help with wind buffet, etc?

Aren't they both the LP Universal Cafe Fairing? I think several people have used them. You have to do a little bit of work with a Dremel, IIRC... Aside from that, it looks like it would help a lot with wind, you should have plenty to tuck in behind.
Now I have a question. Does anyone know the width on the stock flyscreen? I know I could just measure it myself, but if someone just happens to know... Just curious.

I know a fellow BRAG rider here in Georgia who fabricates carbon fiber fly screens for a lot of riders here. After I fit the twin headlights he's gonna make me a "Lightning" flyscreen for my Blast.

Has anyone checked the sport shields in nationalcycle.com? I'm wondering how would the F-15 sport shield work in my Blast. I sometimes have to take the expressway when going riding with friends to Wisconsin and the extra wind protection is something I would love to have as long as it fits the sporty look of the bike.

Naw - the larger square cafe fairing offered in JC Whitney or half a dozen other companies - the smaller one looks better, but that one's not bad either - slight trimming ala dremel or rotozip required - lol
