I'm going to look on Tuesday at a 2002 Lightning. the guy says that someone tried to steal it and cut the ignition wires and before that it just quit on him one day and he suspects the fuel pump. for $500.00 i don't think i can lose money. it's yellow. oh, he also said that just before it quit it started making a ticking sound. fuel pump?

I don't think you could go wrong for $500 bucks. I would have bought it if it was in wisconsin

Yes even if it ended up needing a motor you would be into it for 2000 so well worth it

yeah, i don't think i could lose money on the bike so that signals a buy. title in his name... clearly it was owned by someone who didn't know much about motorcycle maintenance or didn't care... it might be a high mileage bike though. he said that he would send me a pic of the speedo today.... if the engine is toast but with a good tranny, i can swap it in my 2000 cyclone with bad 2nd gear dogs. if i can get it running that would be great. first thing, repair the cut ignition wires and check for spark.

Other first thing: drop oil pump and look for damaged drive gear.

I don't think I've heard of a 2002 with a failed drive gear though.
Might be a good idea to cut open the oil filter and see if there are engine chunks in there before you crank it over.

I think you reeeeally scored here.
I am very jealous of you!

A battery might come in handy, too.
Hope it turns out to just be minor stuff.

I rode my 02 today for the first time in many months and it's quite a change from the Useless or Triumph triples.
A tractor in drag, for sure.

well, the guy isn't answering my calls or emails so i'm not hopeful.

update: the guy emailed me today and said that he just got back AND he lost his phone so there is still hope that i will get this bike.

Do you need trailer lights in the daytime?

Good luck with the trailer! Check with the guy selling it and see if he has a hill or anything you can back up to that'll make it possible to roll a non-running bike up a ramp into the bed.

If that fails, shove a steel rod through the rear axle. Makes lifting the rear into the truck easier. Turns it into a two person job.

in need brake lights.

the guy went on a sailboat cruise and lost his phone so contacting him is not easy. but that's what i was thinking however i just googled a map and i can't see any hills or ditches et...

what i'm going to do is splice directly into the wires going into my tailights and run some auxiliary trailer lights -that i got at the thrift store for a dollar- to the back of the trailer.

i got my cyclone into the bed of my truck with the help of two other guys but it's dicey. a trailer is the way to go.

update and pics tomorrow!

I know! even if the engine had a rod hanging out of the case, the wreckage would be worth more than that!

i bought that truck in texAss circa 1982. it was an old plumbers truck with lots of dents. orig 235 straight six w 456 gear so i installed T5 trans. at 2100rpm i'm going 60mph. that's fine... had to delete the pics and re-upload.

i'm going out now to get it out of the trailer and look it over. someone tried to steal it and cut the ignition wires. the back tire looks almost new. Josh, -the seller- said that he believes that it needs a fuel pump. i'll have to troubleshoot it after i get an ignition harness.

ok, i got it out of the trailer, washed it and did some preliminary inspection. the plugs look very good. no oil fouling et...the tires are Michelin and are very good. fixed a few piddly things oh, but forgot to check the oil. ... the wires from the ignition are cut (see pic) so i'm guessing that i can just buy a new harness and splice it in. see pic. once done i can then see if it fires up with starting fluid. if so, i'm good to go and then see if it runs off the fuel pump. cool frickin bike!

the last pic shows where the wires were cut from the ignition.

Check with St Paul HD before you get sucked into any ebay bidding on that. They saved me a nice bit of coin on my shock last season.

all i really need is that plastic connector and i can splice wires at the switch. i can do it without the connector but i hate to cut it off.

Houston we have ignition!

OK, i blasted the Cyclone to the Harley dealer today and sucked their free beer then came home, ate and started working on the Lightning. i spliced some wires into the loose ignition harness and jumped it. i turned the key and VOILA! everything lit up as it should. i was not positive though because the colors on the wires were barely recognizable. but this is a very good sign indeed. i'll get some black silicone and squish it in between those contacts and let it dry for a day or so then tape it up with elec tape and that will keep the contacts from shorting out. then i have to do a starting fluid test to see if the problem is the fuel pump. i really wish this were a carbed bike. FI needlessly complicates an otherwise simple motorcycle.

what you see in the pics is the ignition switch removed from the dash and the wires i spliced into the connector. the 2nd pic shows the dash lighting up and the odometer reading. only 17k miles. that's excellent because when i spoke to the seller he said something about 57K miles. but the fuel pump should do 17k without a problem so it will be interesting to find out. when i turned on the ignition i didn't hear the pump pressure-up but i've never had a FI bike before so i don't know what is what...
