So after reading about the stator issue (and happening to me : ( ) I have been reading about all these fixes.

New harness, '08 stator, mosfet VR, custom rewinds etc etc..

The mosfet seems to be the popular choice but no-one has made it clear that this is indeed the fix when with new harness.

So has anyone had a mosfet/new harness and still had a stator failure?

Is this the right fix?

I put a mosfet in mine after the stock reg failed. It runs cooler and I haven't had any issues with the stator yet.

I think replacing the regulator is a good start but I'm not convinced it's the answer to the stator problems.

The MOSFET VR will help with VR related issues but NOT the stator.. It's still a shunt type so will still allow the stator to generate full power all the time - it's just better and "managing" the output and not generating heat in the VR itself.

Rewinds "seem" to be working but there's not enough info available to be certain.

When my warranty is up i'm going to replace the stator with a rewound item with a slightly lower power output, replace the VR with a Series regulator and ditch the harness... then forget about it all : )

If one has a rewound stator and new VR, but keeps the harness, will that damage anything?

you could use the recall harness and the new vr.
Some poeple with the recall have very low voltage while ideling.
I opted to mostfet vr and rewind.(using the recall harness for the new vr connector wire)
My dime but i ride 900 miles from home in Gods Country (Blue Ridge mountains)
My stock Stator went 10000 miles and was still working but i could not risk it dieing on my play days.

If it were me, and this is just my opinion, I'd swap to an 08 stator and rotor. I feel that the 08 setup works and the 09 doesn't, so why try to reinvent the wheel?

Well, the reason they changed the setup from '08 to '09 is because it didn't really work. There were charging problems and a lot of dead batteries. You shouldn't have to keep your vehicle on a battery tender between rides every day. Unfortunately, the fix was worse than the problem. It seems to me upgraded VR's and more robust stators are the solution they should have come up with instead of the harness patch.

I am with Jules. I will let HD replace my components until a) they get sick of it and come up with a permanent fix or, b) I get sick of being stranded without my motorcycle or c) my warranty runs out without an otherwise satisfactory solution. Then, assuming I have not otherwise given up on the bike, I will go the upgraded stator/rewind route.

Wasn't most the 08 dead battery due to a IC Draw?

Rt, yes that was the biggest reason. The next was the ECM flash that fixed the other half of it.

Mine failed today, 09cr 11,800 miles. Still under warranty but apparently warranty isn't really a fix. I don't mind paying to fix it, but is there a definite fix? Is the Mosfet a VR, or a company that does rewinds also?
Mine is stock, no upgrades/ harness replacements or anything.

The final revision of the '08 worked fine for most people, but under some conditions (commuting in Los Angeles traffic in the summer) the stator still couldn't keep up.

Will a "custom rewind" with the stock harness take care of it? Or does anyone know......

They who installed custom rewinds are currently beta testing them.
Long term test results are coming... eventually.: )

I bit the bullet and did a mosfet and had Custom rewind do the stator.
To fen wet to ride here in michigan.
But will be headed to the dragon.
Charging at a solid 14 volts after about 20 seconds now.
I hope this 300 dollars and 3 hours is a permant fix

Well, I have an 08 and have not been satisfied with how the VR works with it. I bit the bullet and got a Mosfet VR as well. It just arrived here. Time for an install.

Are you afraid your new regulator is going to electrocute you in the rain? Go ride : )
