FYI, Geoff will not be running in the 200, only in the Superbike races. He was entered, but the decision was made not to run.

Kind of a bummer, but I look forward to seeing Geoff in the Superbike race.

There are TWO Buells entered in the DAYTONA 200.

Pat Mooney - #41

Geoff May - #99

. . . I'm counting down hours . . . this is going to be cool !!

So...who to believe? Court or that Anonymous guy?

And if #99 is not going to run in the 200, what caused the change of plan?

Pretty sure Geoff is out. Suspect Erik Buell Racing did not want to spread themselves thinner than they already are.

"Entered" doesn't mean running. Statements by Court and anonymous are not in conflict.

Tactically it wouldn't make sense.

Daytona Sportbike spec bike needed to race in the 200 - yeah, they COULD race it but after (if they're lucky) "only" burning $15,000 to race, the bike would be USED UP ... and then they gonna race that same bike in Superbike? Run a "B" bike? Build two separate setup bikes - and then take a risk that nobody tips over?

The 200 is cool from a spectator standpoint but it makes no sense at all since there is NO OTHER endurance race - so you really end up building a bike JUST FOR the 200 if you're serious about it. You'd need a totally different TYPE of bike the rest of the season - even though still a Daytona Sportbike, it would just HAVE to be different build.

Too bad they don't have a huge checkbook.

slaughter,

yours is the voice of [experienced!] reason amongst all the yammering -

200 miles @ Daytona actually does 'use up' most race bikes......

Shoot, I'd get used up just watching the 200 if Geoff were riding. ; )

But, if he's not riding it, that'll leave the day open for the SCAB Malibu Canyon Romp starting at Burbank & Topanga, and then, if I'm still wound up or worn out from that, I can watch the video tape of the race. Life is Good.: )

Go Geoff Go!!!

You guys are funny, the Superbike is a 1125RR,and the Sportbike is a 1125R, two totally different bikes, for two separate classes. Eric Bostrom is racing in both classes at Daytona, and it has been done many times in the past. At Daytona, since it is a pure Horsepower track ,and Geoff May has to race the 1125RR instead of the more powerfull 1190RS,he will be lucky to get a top 10 finish in the Superbike races. The Buell 1125R has a horsepower advantage in the Daytona 200, and Geoff would have a good chance of getting on the podium ,and the Daytona 200 is going to televised live on Speed. The two Superbike races will be tape delayed ,and will be televised late Saturday night, and early Sunday morning . The Daytona 200 winner also gets a 20K purse, and Geoff would have to win both Superbike races to get 20K,and with the 1125RR down 20 to 30 horsepower to the top teams bikes in the Superbike class, that is verry doubtfull.

Yabbut the 200 counts ZERO toward Superbike. HUGE costs, LOTS of risks and Geoff is competing in Superbike as far as I know and NOT Sportbike... so it costs Buell another $15K AT LEAST in direct costs... and for what?

And I have to add that Bostrom will be there with at least 4 bikes plus spares to race in both classes.

^^^^^correct, again, Steve^^^^^

Pat Mooney, an experienced racer with amateur & semi-Pro championships in hand, IS competing in The Daytona 200

Pat, known here as manxboy, started this thread......

This year, next year [& beyond?], perhaps Pat or others will benefit from any Daytona Buell 1125R advantages to craft a win in The Daytona 200

so, to respect all that & also end a minor Erik Buell Racing thread-jack, perhaps we could return to the particular subject of "Daytona 200 and Buell" - that is, Buell rider[s] running the Big Race?

besides, aren't we the same folks discussing "Superbike" & Geoff in that thread?

We're going to be watching on our Company TV in the gym (we make rare exceptions to watching Television - Daytona is one of them)

(Bummed that Shawn couldn't make it) but like Geoff said on his facebook site,

quote:

But we have Pat Mooney carrying the flag for us, he's as cool as they come.

You have to remember that once upon a time the Daytona 200 was a major international race attracting world champions and legions of top US and foreign riders eager to add the coveted 200 trophy to their collection.

Unfortunately over the years it has been devalued and diminished in stature and is now a lot less important in terms of manufacturer sales and marketing than it once was.
This isn't to denigrate anyone racing in it as it is obviously just as hard a race as it ever was, but it just doesn't generate anywhere near as much publicity as the Superbike races do. Outside the US it will hardly warrant a mention even in the specialised motorcycle press.
If you are a small manufacturer looking to make a splash at Daytona then the blue riband class these days has to be Superbikes and not the 'main event' 200 miler I'm afraid, so Erik is probably right to concentrate on that class instead from a business perspective.

I agree with Trojan. I say a bit more here http://www.davegess.com and will have some more to say tomorrow comparing the 200 to the Isle of Man TT. Many parallels can be drawn and DMG may learn I thing or two buy looking at what the folks on the Isle of Man are doing.

The Erik Buell Racing team is not going to run the 200. Geoff will ride in the two Superbike races, Friday and Saturday, on an 1125RR. Pat is going to run the 200 on his 1125R.

Just a friendly heads-up that the title Speed Channel is using "Daytona Bike Week" isn't one that my DVR recognized as one that needed to be recorded.

For those of you that record and watch the races later, be sure to check that your DVR is set to record the event.

Erik is on a plane in 7 minutes . . . . I'm in a taxi head through Times Square to meet Mike who is waiting at the airport.

Daytona . . . . After all these years is still exciting.

We'll be thinking of the Pegasus Team friends
