The tuning IS proven. Period. Few only know of it and that is intentional.

from what i gather even the people on this board that are saying they are tuning them, still say they havent figured it all out yet and are still learning.

We are not talking about a mega funded, skunk works project with no price limit...

Same bike, Same Dyno, Same Dyno operator, as close to the same atmospheric conditions as can be had.

Hard to get much better than that...

Slypiranna: why is this tuning a secret? Do you think some men in black helicopters are going to come for you in the night if you tell everyone, or is someone planning on marketing it as an upgrade in the near future?

Maybe the original dyno run was done on an ill 11? Was a warranty addressed? Maybe the dyno was ill that day? Is it now ok? What are the pre/post AFV's...or was there another flash involved? And on and on...please help the techs understand.

No the bike was running fine the day of the first dyno. The bike already had the third flash at the time of the first dyno. I haven't touched it since then. There is no standardization in dynomometers and its not unheard of for the same bike, same day, two different dynos to have huge number discrepancies. I haven't measured AFVs yet. The 133 number might have been a fluke run.

As for the five runs back to back, as the temperature of the engine goes up the power goes down, the first run is usually going to be the best because it is when the bike is coldest and there is the most oxygen in the room. This thing runs alot better with the pipe ask Paint_Shaker or New12R they've both ridden stock 1125s and the bike with the pipe on it.

I guess it boils down to you can either believe me or just think I'm a liar. Considering that I stand to gain nothing from lying about these numbers, I'm just doing this to help out Kevin.

Ron_luning,

The tuning is not a secret...thus the reason I am posting in public for you to see.

The tuning (that a few have been using) is not a sponsored partner here so those of us involved...have been advised to not post relevant data related to it.

Hope this helps you understand what I meant, just a little better.

Have fun boys and watch out for those men in black!

p.s...you guys watch too much tv?

Buellgator,

Geez...no one called you a liar!?

Why such a defending post?

Again...hellooooo...where is the DATA?!

If you run a dyno and such, you cannot post info similar to Easyrider's example?

Hope you all take this as CONSTRUCTIVE help and not in the wrong way.

I have to assume that I am communicating with grown men and women...er, adults.

Good night, over and out. mm

The trend we have seen the last two weekends on the dyno typically show slightly better numbers on the second and third pull (we always do three to be sure), looking at all three they are all within +/- 1.5 HP of the average. That's what I would call consistent.

But that is with decent A/F ratios and closed loop/learning disabled. We aren't dealing with an ECM that is trying to compensate (learn) for something that wasn't in it's original design (different exhaust flow characteristics). That's why our numbers are stable.

We have two blowers on the intake and radiator inlet area to keep the temps under control. It's water cooled, so the engine temp stays pretty consistent. You must have fresh air blowing between the radiators or the intake air temperature will go high. The engine is sucking in all the hot air off the radiators and power numbers will be affected. The ecm sees it and compensates the mixture for higher air temperature.

You guys would be amazed at how much quieter cooler and smoother this engine runs with a proper (non-EPA) tune. But I guess until you have witnessed it you wouldn't have a clue.

What data do you want? I can't find anything in his latest thread that I don't have here.

Xb9, unfortunately our dyno room was designed by a moron who had no idea what it took to run a dyno. I have a huge floor fan blowing on the bike, and a fairly powerful suction fan pulling the exhaust fumes out(it's still not enough in my opinion though) but not much else. I asked the tech doing the dynos if I should bother with more airflow over the bike and he told me it wouldn't make enough difference, because of how small the room is.

All of this has been pretty interesting.
Just some thoughts before I crash into bed after too much beer.

1. I like Kevin, great person to deal with and I loved his Drummer SS.

2. I hope that this muffler will be as good and even better than his mufflers for the XB's.

3. When the dyno numbers came out and I have to admit I am not an expert on these things, but it was difficult for me to ratioanalize the amount of h.p. increase without mods to filter and fuell map. (Yes, I know the ECM can learn...up to a point.)

4. If his muffler can post up those numbers, just think what it can do with hi-flow filter and putting more fuel in. (Yes, XB9 can do this.)

5. We all have something to gain by this exchange and I don't believe anyone is benefiting by taking pot shots at one another. BUT, you should be able to have your data questioned in cases like this, it is nothing personal. (I have ideas where I work and it is very typical that I am faced with "devil advocates". At first I was offended, now I know that considering their views actually help me by giving me a different look at what I am doing. It helps me.

7. I can't remember what number I am on.

9. So in conclusion, I think we are doing well and great things will occur in the future.

GO BUELL!!

p.s. thanks XB9, can't wait to get my bike on the pavement....7 to 9 thou ought to be pretty fun!!

Sounds too good to be true...

A slip on system which makes an extra 8hp (taking the most conservative figuring) without tuning or any other modifications?

Especially as the others seem to be struggling simply not to lose power...

I think it speaks worlds for Kevin Drum and the fact that he knows how to build an exhaust system.

Ya know, I think you all know where my allegiance (and $$$) is (and will be), but here's what I think. None of the other pipe manufacturers let the ECM learn before they slapped the bike on a dyno for the "after" shots!

That would explain a lot. Until the AFV's caught up, they would be running lean, and not making optimal #'s.

Yes? No? Maybe so?

I can see it making 5 to 8 more hp with only an exhaust. My FZ6 made about 88 at the wheel, added an Akrapovic exhaust and gained 2.5 peak hp, and and about 3 in the mid-range. Then we tuned it with a PC3 on an Eddy Current dyno using a 4-Gas EGA, not an exhaust probe. (A/F isn't a very good way to tune a motorcycle) The final result was 94 hp at the wheel, 40% more power a partial throttle settings, less emissions (0% CO), better mileage, better throttle response and rideability. So if a 599cc motor can get 2.5 hp from an exhaust alone, then an 1125cc motor could get 5 to 8 more hp with a well thought out exhaust.

When Kevin & I design our exhaust systems we design them for the street to be used with the stock ECM map. We ship worldwide to all atmospheric conditions and expect our systems to work well everywhere with no other modifications required. After producing over 2,000 XB mufflers since 2003 we know what our customers want. If someone desires to dumb down the Buell ECM by disconnecting the O2s and tuning for a specific set of conditions, that's cool too. With considerable effort they probably will get some more power out of the motor for those exact conditions. That's not how we do it because we are not designing for a closed course, we are designing for smooth running and more power for everyday riding, everywhere. Just coincidentally, experience has proven that our systems work superbly on the track as well.

The bottom line here is the system looks good, sounds good, weighs half of the stock one and makes more power than stock. Its been tested on the street, the track and the dyno with good results. The finish will be impeccable, as are all hand made Kevin Drum products. I know the fit will be good because I engineered it myself.

You can have one for $979.95 plus shipping.

every exhaust that I have bought with any quality has been 1 large one or more.
Leo Vince for a Tuono- 1100 bux
Termignoni for 998- 1500 bux
Arrow for a CBR1K - 1300 bux

And those were "mass produced" pipes - plus I needed to by a PCIII for another $350 to optimize their performance...

It seemed that when (if) I went to sell the bike- I recovered ~60% the original cost on the pipe selling on flea bay, etc.

We all justify the costs in our own mind- for my money, there is no other pipe I would like than the 1125 Drummer.

I probably will stick with the stock exhaust for awhile. I know that the Drummer is designed to be used with the stock mapping, but I can't help but think what the potential would be if it did have more fuel and low restriction filter....
