My Comment:I'm hoping you can get over 80 to 100 mpg - Cycle World got close to
75 mph on the Blast with the Ninja 250 getting just over 78. - I could be off a mph or two on both, but the separation wasn't far apart
between the two bikes - the Ninja barely got the nod.

Ralph:EZ, first off, their testing wasn't done by real world standards, as
I'm sure THEIR Test rider wasn't 6'4" and 220lbs in full gear. So right
there my Miser is at a disadvantage. And to put it more in context,
even before ALL my engine mods waay back in 2002 when my motor was bone
stock with only 1000miles on it, it only gave me about 63mpg TOPS !
Maybe it would have given some 98lb 5'4" test rider 75mpg, but NOT
ME ! So my results so far are a Tremendous Improvement !
For my future tweaks, I plan on running a very hard rear tire- the Sava
Bogart, which was reported to give the highest tread mileage ever
recorded by a *FULL size adult male. I also intend to switch to lighter
grades of motor oil, I'll first try a 10w40 full synth, and then I'll
try a 10w30 full synth, and also plan on using ATF fluid in the
primary.
BTW- right now I'm running a #165 main and #42 pilot jet, but my next
step is to reduce the main jet to a #155. And fyi- I'm running a
completely Stock Blast exhaust and Airbox...including air filter
element... the reason being, going less restrictive also necessitates
going richer in jetting to compensate, and I don't want that. I also
have a SE iggie installed, and once the jetting is close, I'll start
adjusting the advance curves and note the mpg changes.

*FULL : meaning even heavier than ME !
Me:
At least he's having fun - lol

Two more comments: 1) see the dude on the xb board who is putting a blast engine in an xb frame, 2) I'd rather see an xb engine fuel injection modified to work on the blast, mpg would go up and oil consumption down. Also, since my 4/22 post gas has gone up as have scooter sales.

Chipping in after a week away:

1) How to accurately measure gas mileage on the Blast? Run it 'til you need reserve and quickly go fill up?

2) Possible explanation for those who get bad mileage on their Blast may be the content of ethanol in the gas they buy. I've noticed it creeping back into the regular gas at many stations my self. My truck is a flex-fuel vehicle and I have tested it on the mostly ethanol fuel before and the mileage is miserable because of the lack of available energy in the fuel. I figured that the cost of corn fuel needs to be about half of regular gasoline to make it more economical once the bad fuel mileage is factored in. Unfortunately it is almost always more expensive than premium gas!

You can't get accurate measurements on one tank. The best way to get accurate measurement is to average at least 3 tanks. 5 or more will give you more accuracy. Measuring one tank can get you +/- 5 MPG from a number of factors.

Corn fuel is the most expensive ethanol fuels. Cost to energy was something like $3 equivalent to a gallon of gasoline. Higher prices are nothing more than profiteering.

Ralph is no longer a Blastard - lol

I have some sad news to report, my Miser Motor project has basically
seen the end of the road. I'll explain...
Today I was out riding the little Miser, and was crossing a small
mountain range that I cross all the time, I didn't notice anything
different, and if I had been totally deaf or if I had a very loud
exhaust on(fyi-I have a stock muffler installed)I might not have
heard the noise. At first I was sure it wasn't that bad, then it
became more pronounced. It started as a rattle, kinda like a loose
primary chain, then it start to make a squeaky squeal related to
engine rpm's. At first I thought maybe something in the Primary
broke, like maybe the plastic adjuster shoe- or the plastic upper
guide had broken and fell into the spinning primary chain. The bike
still didn't seen to run any differently at all, and I was about 10
miles from home- and just continued along the way, and stopped once
at a store, and then started her back up and listened to the sound,
thinking it can't be too bad- but there is something definately going
south ! And so I rode the rest of the way home at 55mph and listened
to the constant squealing and rattling.
So I get home, and get my tools and start draining the primary oil
and tearing off the footpeg support, all to access and open the
primary cover- to see what all the racket is about. So in about 20
minutes I'm ready to pop the primary cover off, expecting to see some
kind of nasty broken stuff in there. I pull the cover and scan all
the primary parts, they all are intact and pristine.... uh oh. I
checked everything in there, and all was perfect, so I put it all
back together(using the same gaskets) and filled the primary with one
quart of Castrol Grade 70 motorcycle oil, figuring if something in
the tranny- like a bearing was going, it might help quiet it down and
help some. Well.... I started it back up, the squeal and rattle is
still there, so I take it for a ride and nothing has changed. Soooo,
my final diagnosis and conclusion is- a bearing it Toast ! I dunno
for sure if it's in the tranny or on the crank...but by using
the "rod to ear" stethescope method to listen, I think it's a crank
or rod bearing :-(

The bike still runs, but the damage is done, and it's inside the
cases, and it just isn't worth it to split these cases. Don't forget,
this was my spare back up motor that I did the top end work to, but
the bottom end was untouched, and I believe it had 35,000+ miles on
it when I got it in partial trade for my 600 motor from TJ.

Right now, I'm not sure if I gonna spend anymore time or money on
this Blast. It had a long run, it's a 2001 with just about 48,000
miles on it...but it's old, and working on it is getting OLD too :-(
I still have the motor I pulled out about 6 weeks ago- which is
actually the original motor that belongs in the bike, but that motor
has even higher mileage, and to tell the truth, it was starting to
make some funny noises down below as well :-(

The only ray of sunshine in all this, is that I have my Sporty- which
I just Love ; )

I may just keep on running the Blast around my small village, until
the motor finally decides to give up and roll over...
It's been fun, but maybe it's time to pull the plug on the Life
support?

LOL -
